COMNET’11: Broadening Horizons

The most important need for fresh graduates is a job or internship where they can, through practice, reinforce university learning. However, these jobs are hard to come by. Increasing awareness amongst the industry moguls of this apparent dearth in Pakistan’s job market has helped to bring about a paradigm shift in the way we conduct businesses today. As the economy began to stabilize a little and businesses reconstructed themselves, a number of Pakistani businessmen have realized the importance of communication with graduates and university students.

Consequently, there have been many events where industrialists, academia and students came together to discuss the needs and expectations that each has from the other. COMNET’11 is one such event designed to bridge that gap between students and the Industry in Pakistan.

COMNET’11 is the third National Conference on Information and Communication Technologies and Career Fair organized by the Usman Institute of Technology. It will be held on Saturday, the 23rd of April 2011 and is open to all students and professionals who wish to register to attend the event. The conference has been divided into three sessions.

The first session will feature experts in the field of business and technology who will talk about the changing trends in the field of technology and entrepreneurship options available to students and professionals who wish to strike out on their own after completing their education. The session will also focus on how students could improve themselves and the business ethics that they should follow to have a more successful career. The second session, titled Professional Forums, will be a more discussion-based session where professionals will be able to talk about the future of technology in Pakistan and the rest of the world.

In particular, attention will be paid to the merits (and demerits) of 3G and 4G in Pakistan and the necessity to shift from IPv4 addresses to IPv6 addresses online. The third session will be a workshop which will again focus on IPv6, migration strategies and case studies. This workshop will be a combination of both theory and practical learning in a 40:60% ratio. The event will also feature a Career Fair whereby students could find out good jobs that they could apply for also!

Such events have a great deal of importance for a developing country like Pakistan, and it’s simple to understand how they can be so beneficial for all the students as well as the professionals who attend it. On the one hand, it allows students to learn more about the careers they wish to embark on after graduating; they understand the current needs and requirements of the university and are able to gauge current industry trends.

According to Jehan Ara, President of P@SHA, “these students are the creative human resource that we need.” The industry specialists on the other hand are able to see the potential available in their own country also. Pakistan has a lot of talent, in the shape of these fresh graduates and young professionals, which could be extremely beneficial to the technology industry in particular. Most technology industries are unaware of the prospects available within the country itself and perforce have to lease out work to free lancers abroad. As Murad Akhtar, CEO of Tintash once said, it is better to have the “cheaper, local talent,” which fulfills all their requirements and helps improve the country’s economy at the same time.
