Absinthe 2.0 carries support for iPad 1,1 â€" 2,1 â€" 2,2 â€" 2,3 â€" 3,1 â€" 3,2 â€" 3,3 and iPhone 2,1 â€" 3,1 â€" 3,3 â€" 4,1 and iPod Touch 3,1 â€" 4,1 except the iPad 2,4. In layman, that's nearly every device that has the capability to run iOS 5 and above.

Please backup your device before using Absinthe 2.0 through iTunes or iCloud. Once the backup is complete, go to Settings â€" General â€" Reset â€" Erase all Content and Settings. This will make the jailbreak process much faster. Later, you can restore the backup once the jailbreak is complete.

AnySend Lets You Share Files Over Wi-Fi Between Android Devices – Download Now!

Whilst sharing files between Android devices is nowhere near as tedious as Apple appears to be making it for iOS users, that doesn’t mean to say apps facilitating and promoting file sharing between smartphones and tablets are not welcome. Despite the stance of the vendors, consumers love apps which aid easy miscellaneous file transfer between devices, and AnySend is a wonderful example of how such a utility should look, behave and perform.

It has a clean, minimalistic interface â€" which is a giveaway sign of any decent app, and due to its ease of use, there’s no need to spend an age tailoring the app before it can be used. Providing two devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi hotspot, AnySend will allow you to quickly and easily send and receive files wirelessly â€" with very little hassle along the way.

unnamed

Once AnySend is installed on the two devices in question, it automatically begins detecting and linking, and within seconds, the file transfer process can begin. It can be left running in the background, so if someone within your Wi-Fi vicinity is trying to push a file or two through to you, you will be alerted though status bar notification.

If you’re a power "file-transferrer," you can set AnySend to automatically receive files from white-listed devices, which is not only a great time-saver, but means you needn’t get involved if the files are arriving from trusted sources.

unnamed (3)

There are plenty of apps similar to AnySend over at the Play Store, but none boast the violent simplicity found here, and once you’ve set your custom name and profile picture of your device within the settings menu, you’re good to go.

I get the impression that if AnySend was compatible with iOS as well, it would be a killer app, and bringing cross-platform implementation is certainly, in my opinion, something the developers should consider. Still, it does a great job at present, and if it also supported batch sharing, it would be the complete package.

It’s free to download from the Google Play Store, and if you’re always in a position whereby you need to quickly share a photo, video, document or whatever between your Android devices, then below is certainly a link you’ll want to be pressing.

Nokia Global Launch in Pakistan: First Time Ever!

We are invited to a number of launch events and we have almost attended all of them, and being in Pakistan we have always been part of launch events for devices that are about to be launched in Pakistan.

Thanks to Nokia Pakistan, for the first time ever, a new Nokia phone announcement was made from Pakistan at a global launch event held at Marriott Hotel, Karachi last week.

This was a media event held just for the traditional media, newspapers/magazines and online media (this is where we come in!). Sizzled Core, along with a bunch of other bloggers around Pakistan were invited to be a part of this grand event.

Nokia’s decision to choose Pakistan for the global launch of their upcoming devices was a clear sign of how important Pakistani market is for Nokia. Nokia envisions to connect the next billion people with the newly launched Nokia 110 and Nokia 112. Great presentations, and overview of how strong the telecommunications industry is in Pakistan, dance, music, fireworks… This was all part of the Nokia event.

Nokia has the biggest app store in Pakistan which includes 2,000,000+ weekly downloads on average! Almost all of media fro mPakistan is accessible on the Nokia Store â€" apps include: Geo, Aaj TV, Dawn News, Express Tribune, ARY News, Radio Pakistan etc.

Some really cool local applications are also available, such as Cricket, Ludo, Toffee TV etc. Islamic apps on the App store have millions of downloads. There are over 400 local apps, with 200+ Pakistan developers contributing to the Nokia App store which bring the download count of the Pakistani content to over 17 million!

These statistics and figures were shared by the three key speakers of the main event â€" Imran Khalid Mahmood, Saulo Passos and Calin Turcanu. The event had global and regional spokesperson from Nokia to share their thoughts on emerging markets and the new devices. Let’s take a brief intro to each of these speakers.

    Imran Khalid Mahmood

Imran Khalid Mahmood is the VP, Near East, Nokia Corporation. In his line of duty he is responsible for heading the sales strategy for Nokia in this region. He is the frontrunner of all measurable KPIs and maintains a strict vigilance over them which are the main reason for Nokia’s success and popularity in this region.

    Saulo Passos

Saulo Passos is the Global Director Mobile Phone Communications at Nokia, based in London, England. As part of the global Mobile Phones leadership team, his main focus targets the Next Billion strategy, a Nokia effort to connect more people to the internet, using a mobile device as the leading path.

    Calin Turcanu

Starting from August, 2011, Calin Turcanu is the Head of Mobile Phones Business Unit, Nokia India, Middle East & Africa and overseessales, marketing and business development of Nokia devices in the region. Calin is actively involved in developing business strategies to ensure market success of key Nokia devices and strengthen Nokia’s brand presence in the region at the same time.

Remember the dance and music I mentioned earlier? Check out the photo below.

We’ll try to get a full video coverage for you to watch it as well. This performance was just before the Nokia team unveiled their new Nokia 110 and Nokia 112.

These new devices will be available in Pakistan and soon after into rest of the world, starting from the end of May. Prices of these new Nokia phones were one of them ain concerns by the attendees there. Nokia 110 is priced at Rs. 3800 and Nokia 112 will be available for Rs. 4000. Very affordable, isn’t it?

Nokia is continuously working on making the value rich features affordable to all price points â€" Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 are great examples of how even the entry-level Nokia devices don’t just offer optimized and affordable internet but at the same time flaunt a stylish design that will cater to a variety of lifestyles.

These devices will prove to be a true enabler in providing the people of Pakistan and the consumers from other growing economies with their first internet experience on mobile phone. Having internet on mobile phone opens up doors for new opportunities for the masses and helps them follow their dreams.

Now, we expect Nokia to make a bigger global launch announcement from Pakistan next time!

    ‘WhatsApp’ Or ‘Hownow’?

    (For PCWorld Pakistan)

Although it would be impolite, try reaching out to Blackberry user and ask one on face, what’s keeping him/her stuck to the device? Not always, but quite often, the rat on the pothole is the Blackberry Messenger (BBM).  As most would know, it is an always-on chat network that lets users communicate IM-style (Instant Messaging-style) without having to sign up or use their monthly allotment of text messages with a small daily-deduction. Challenging its sovereignty over Blackberry is WhatsApp, another IM-style chatting app.  From what can be judged, there will be others to follow.

Therefore we decided to have a look at a couple of other smart phone messenger apps available in the market, and on different platforms, that lets user chat IM-Style for free. Let’s take a look at WhatsApp versus a newbie, Hownow!

    WhatsApp

WhatsApp is smartphone messenger which helps you send message between different phones and platforms. It basically uses the internet to send instant messages to your friends, keeping your text allowance nice and high.

Using push notifications, WhatsApp also allows you to send videos, images and voice notes to your contacts free of charge. This is particular useful for sharing photos quickly with your friends. There is no need to add friends using pins or user names; if a friend has WhatsApp and is in contacts list then the app will automatically add that friend to WhatsApp buddies list. WhatsApp also let the users do group chats with multiple friends like using MSN messenger. Additionally, with custom statuses, you can tell everyone what’s on your mind or where you are.

WhatsApp is currently available on iPhone, BlackBerry, Android, and Nokia phones. It can be downloaded from their respective app stores. The iPhone app costs $0.99 while it’s free for BlackBerry users and Nokia users. It is free for one year for Android users but they will be charged $0.99 after one year.

    Hownow

Hownow is another free messenger app but it is limited to iPhone users only. It is a located based social networking app where users present their ideas with semi-anonymous names; whatever name they like, for e.g. they can even use their Zodiac sign as their name.

This app, too, does not require any log-in ID or sign-up system to use and takes up communication level from a “Worldwide level” to “City” level, to “Neighborhood” level or even at the “Block” level. It’s just that the other users need to have the app downloaded on their iPhones as well. The storage of the messages depends on the users’ needs i.e. for an hour, for one day, for one week, for one month, or forever. With Hownow, the iPhone users can also share photos with each other. Moreover, they can also sync their Twitter accounts for cross-sharing purposes.

The app has recently been acquired by Betaworks, a New York based incubator for social-media startups. The company has revised the app with small adjustments and inclusion of Google Maps. As mentioned, the app is only available for iPhone and the company does not have any sorts of plans to launch it on other platforms.

Shayan Anique, Self Proclaimed World Record Holder, Turns out to be a Fraud [Updated]

Shayan Anique, Self Proclaimed World Record Holder, Turns out to be a Fraud [Updated]

By Aamir Attaa · Monday, May 28, 2012 93 Comments

    Read this post in Urdu

Shayan Anique Akhtar thumb thumb Shayan Anique, Self Proclaimed World Record Holder, Turns out to be a Fraud [Updated]It is unfortunate to report that Shayan Akhtar, the self proclaimed world record holder for Youngest Microsoft professional, is a fraud told me officials from Microsoft.

Shayan Akhtar, a student from Okara, recently claimed that he has set a new world record by scoring 998 marks out of total 1,000 in a Microsoft Professional Certificate programme.

Furthermore Shayan had claimed that Bill Gates has invited him for one to one meeting in July 2012.

Microsoft officials from Pakistan as well as United States, who wanted to remain unnamed, confirmed ProPakistani that Shayan is fabricating facts and communication records to gain popularity for reasons not known to them.

Shayan Akhtar was never invited by Bill Gates, commented company officials.

Microsoft officials also maintained that Microsoft doesn’t keep track of age for its certified professionals anymore. Hence there’s no point of claiming being youngest or oldest certified professional.

When we asked from Shayan about the same, he said that Microsoft could be lying to ProPakistani, and that he was indeed invited by Bill Gates for which he is visiting US in December 2012. He said he could show us the email invitation as well. (We will update this post, when and if we get the scan of invitation)

He also claimed that his name will appear in next publication of Guinness Book of World Record, for his extraordinary achievement. He was of the view that his certification (in November 2011) was a recent record that is why his name isn’t appearing in online search for world records on Guinness website.

Shayan’s father didn’t take our call.

Microsoft didn’t comment when we asked if company is considering any legal action against Shayan for the propaganda.

It merits mentioning here that Punjab government was considering to honor Shayan by throwing a ceremony which of course isn’t happening now.

It maybe recalled that Ammar Afzal, a student from Okara too, was involved in such kind of fraud as well. He had claimed similar kind of records in various certifications, which were later found out to be fake.

    Update:

Shayan has tried to fabricate emails, exactly like what Microsoft officials claimed earlier. Just five minutes ago, I received an email from “Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation”. Here is what the email reads:

We’ve just contacted Shayan Anique to confirm his Bill Gates Invitation. He is invited by Mr Gates to visit Microsoft Corporation in November because of the work he had done in the field of Microsoft Technologies like ASP.NET, MVC, .NET FRAMEWORK and WINDOWS PHONE.

He is also a youngest MCPD in Windows Phone and Web Development 4. Although we have sent his world Records Documents for Verification to Guinness. We have also verified his MCP Transcript from Microsoft. It is totally valid.

We will inform you as soon as we receive reply from Guinness.

    Your’s Sincerely,

    -
    Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
    Main Office
    PO Box 23350
    Seattle, WA 98102

Interestingly, the header of email suggest that this email was sent to us using a proxy email sender.

Meta Widget For Android Lets You Create A Custom Widget Out Of Any Web Content

Custom widgets are a significant aspect of Android, and one of the pull factors as to why somebody would purchase a device running Google’s mobile operating system. Thus, most people have widgets on their home screens, and although the range of widgets available is pretty broad, as anybody who likes to perfect the look of their device can vouch â€" there are always those occasions where you’re left wishing you could create a specific one that hasn’t already been made and released.

If you’re not adept to creating widgets by yourself, an app by the name of Meta Widget has your back. Created by XDA Developers member ftgg99, it allows you to take a portion of the web (a lump of text, an entire page â€" whatever â€" and turn it into a working widget for your home screen.

    unnamed

As the developer states, essentially any content can be parsed from a website, hence it’s an app which will cater to most needs. Once the widget has been created, it can be tweaked at the discretion of the user, and can be set to be automatically updated (handy for blogrolls and other frequently-updated content), or simply manually updated when a user interacts with it, although the auto feature does require a full license key to be purchased.

    unnamed

It’s in beta, so don’t expect the butter-smooth experience you would get from a polished app, but if you’re a big fan of widgets and can think of a couple of areas you like to frequent on the Web, then this one is certainly worth checking out.

In order to get started with Meta Widget, you’ll need to have a device to hand running Android 2.1 or higher, and if you get stuck along the way or discover any glaring bugs, be sure to head over to the original app thread on XDA.

    unnamed (1)

It’s absolutely free of charge, so if you can cope with a few potential stability issues, then be sure to head over to the Google Play Store right now and give it a blast!

Shayan Akhtar Makes an Exquisite Record for Microsoft Professional Certificate

With the departure of Arfa Karim, we thought we would not be able to have such bright students in future. However, we have been coming across some great achievements by our youth. Adding to those achievements, a young student from Okara, Shayan Anique Akhtar has made it to Guinness Book of World Records. The reason is his score of 998 marks out of total 1,000 in a Microsoft Professional Certificate program. Shayan Akhtar is invited by founder of Microsoft Bill Gates on his achievement. Shayan has been making computer and mobile games since 2009 and is currently waiting for his matriculation exam results. It is worth mentioning here that Shayan Akhtar is already a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP), Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS) and Microsoft Professional Developer (MPD).

Facebook Launches Instagram-Like Photo Sharing App

In less than two months, after agreeing to pay about $1 billion for photo-sharing application Instagram, Facebook has introduced a similar app for iPhone and iOS devices. Facebook has announced a free app called Camera that focuses on viewing and sharing photos. Instead of showing what your friends are doing and thinking, it just dives straight to their photo galleries. The app also allows you to share multiple photos at a time, including descriptions and tagging. There are also tools for cropping and applying filters to your images. The app allows Facebook to be used in a much more Instagram-like manner. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the time of acquisition that Instagram would continue to function as a separate entity, so the introduction of Facebook Photos would create a competitor from Facebook’s side.

PTCL’s Appeal against PTA gets Dismissed by the High Court

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has lost a legal battle, for about six years, against Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) as the Islamabad High Court has issued ruling in the favor of authority’s decision which was challenged later on. PTCL’s appeal on the PTA’s determination over dispute of PTCL and LDI Operators has also been dismissed by the Islamabad High Court regarding origination of charges on prepaid calling card service. Long Distance and International (LDI) operators have to pay origination charges to PTCL to provide prepaid calling card services, since they are dependent on PTCL’s network for connectivity. The problem came when PTCL started charging LDI operators for unsuccessful calls while O&M partners were not being charged. LDI operators brought the issue because they should not be charged as per the terms and conditions given in Reference Interconnection Offer (RIO) of PTCL. Therefore, PTA came in between and analyzed the issue with the help of international references as well. As a result, PTA gave determination on 21 August, 2006 that PTCL shall charge LDI operators for both ‘Revenue Time’ and ‘Non-Revenue Time’ on calling card traffic, as origination charges, after giving 25% discount.

Office for iOS and Android Tablets Allegedly Releasing in November

A couple of months ago, a running version of Microsoft Office was spotted on an iPad, but its authenticity was questioned after Microsoft denied it. But the demand for dedicated mobile apps is clearly there, so Microsoft is apparently planning to release its full Office suit for Android and iOS soon. The news was first reported by BGR, which got a tip from “a reliable source” about Microsoft’s plan to bring Office to a wider audience. Not only is the company planning to make the suite available on the iPad, but it’ll also come to Android tablets. It’s still not clear yet whether iPod Touch and iPhone owners will also get to enjoy editing their docs while on the go, but chances are it will be compatible with the two. According to our source, Microsoft is aiming to release both mobile versions of the app in November. Although Office for Windows runs on non-ARM Windows 8 tablets in legacy mode, Microsoft made no promise in regard to providing a metro-optimized version.

Leap Motion is Your Answer To Gesture-based Computing for the Mac

Gesture-based computing is definitely the big thing these days and the geeks would certainly love anything that has its way without a keyword, mouse or any sort of touch control.

Leap Motion is one such product that follows on the lines of Kinect for Xbox 360 and Windows to offer a gesture-based computing solution for the Mac. It is an iPod sized small aluminium and plastic device that looks like something that just came out of an Apple factory. Unbox it, plug it to your Mac via USB and simply launch the Leap Motion software to take charge of your computer with hand gestures.

They say, "the Leap can distinguish your individual fingers and track your movements down to a 1/100th of a millimeter and the technology is 200 times more accurate than anything else on the market". Imagine controlling games, scrolling through books and web-pages, playing music/video, entertainment, movies, creating engineering models etc literally with your hands. The Leap offers so many more applications for use in daily life.

Let's not label it as a Kinect killer yet. The Leap Motion box is scheduled for shipment in winter this year and you can pre-order a box right away on their website. The Leap Motion team is in search for passionate, talented developers who can make gesture-specific apps for the Leap Motion box using the developer kit.

Those who are familiar with the world of jailbreaking will no doubt know that the next couple of days represents a great time for the community, with Pod2g and his band of merry men almost ready to push the button and release their iOS 5.1.1 untether jailbreak, which will liberate all devices capable of running the latest firmware, with the exclusion of the third-generation Apple TV. Whether you believe in coincidence or not, the main players in the production of the jailbreak all happen to be under one roof at the Hack In The Box security conference (HITBSecConf) in Amsterdam.

The official Hack In The Box Twitter account set tongues wagging earlier on the day when they announced that special 1-day passes for the event will be available tomorrow when the Chronic Dev Team take to the stage to demonstrate their jailbreak to a live audience. It had been rumored for quite some time before the conference that prominent members of the famous Chronic Dev Team would be showcasing Absinthe 2.0, but this tweet seems to confirm those rumors.

    Absinthe logo

For those jailbreak fans who happen to be lucky enough to be attending the conference in the beautiful Dutch capital, the lineup is sure to impress as the abilities of the second-generation Absinthe tool will likely be demonstrated by P0sixninja, Pod2g, Planetbeing and Nikias, as well as being accompanied by team server admin iOPK. In terms of jailbreak legends, the lineup doesn’t really get much more impressive than that, with iPhone Dev Team leader MuscleNerd also in attendance, to give his own presentation of the evolution of iPhone basebands.

    HITB

Apart from the fact that the members of the Chronic Dev Team will be taking to the stage at approximately 04:30AM PDT, we don’t really know a great deal else at the moment. At minimum, we should certainly expect to see Absinthe 2.0 fully demonstrated on the latest iPad, as well as an explanation and insight into the exploits used to produce this latest untether. It remains to be seen as to whether the actual public release of the jailbreak will come at some point tomorrow or whether the team will wait until they are in a familiar territory in case any issues occur that need to be resolved.

For those that may want to witness this event first hand and happen to be in or around the Amsterdam vicinity, the Hack In The Box Security Conference are offering special one day Chronic Dev entry passes as indicated by their tweet this morning.

Apple preparing a new line of MacBook Pros with Retina graphics, USB 3.0 and a Slimmer Design

Apple is finishing up it’s new line of MacBook Pros set to be unveiled at WWDC this year.  The new MacBook Pros will feature an all new design giving them a much slimmer body, USB 3.0 and will utilize Intel’s new IvyBridge Processors.  The new Pros are also set to have a new Retina Display that is said to be powered by Nvidia graphics.

The new MacBook Pros will look similar to the current models but the body will be slimmer.  Contrary to early belief, the new Pros will not have an Air like body to them.  The new Pros will also follow suit with the rest of Apple’s products and will lose the optical drive that the current models have in them.  Just another example of how Apple is pushing it’s App Store to provide software to it’s users.  If you still need an optical drive, Apple will still sell it’s super drive as a USB accessory for your Mac.

The rest of the laptop will look very similar to current models with the same ports for charging, USB, thunderbolt, and SD.  The unibody design will continue to give the Pros the same look but will lose the ethernet port on them as well.  There is also a rumor that Apple has removed the firewire port as well, but that will be something we will need to wait for to hear more about.

The new Retina display on the Mac is described as Apple’s best new innovation to date.  The Retina display that is in the current iPhone models as well as the new iPad will show it’s face on a beautiful 15 inch screen.  Rumors are that the new Mountain Lion beta show signs that users will be able to choose modes for the display, adjusting image sizes and sharpness of the screen.  This will give users more options for resolution and more freedom with their display.

Next up is the new USB 3.0 that is said to be included with the new Pros.  Using Intel’s IvyBridge processors that are designed to utilize the power of USB 3.0, Apple would be smart to include this in the new lineup.  Code in the new betas for OSX show signs that Apple will be including super high speed USB in the new laptops, pointing to USB 3.0.  USB 3.0 is rated to give transfer speeds of up to 5Gbps, which is currently ten times faster than USB 2.0.  The new 3.0 is still slower than Thunderbolt as well, which is rated at 10Gbps.  I would like to see more manufacturers bring out accessories for Thunderbolt, but there is still not enough backing it.

That’s all from the rumor mill for now, but with WWDC quickly approaching, I wouldn’t be surprised to see much more information in the coming weeks.  Either way, I’m very excited to see the new lineup and what they can do.  Ivy Bridge processors, with a dedicated Nvidia chip, Retina Display and USB 3.0 is the perfect combination for the ultimate PC killer.

    Heard of Microsoft’s So.cl?

    (For PCWorld Pakistan)

It seems like Microsoft wants to go after its competitors really hard. Earlier, on 10 May 2012, Microsoft made its search engine, Bing, social by integrating it with Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and other social media websites. Now, Microsoft has officially launched an “experimental” social networking site called So.cl, which combines facets of social networking, search, and media sharing with a user interface resembling Google+.

The website is a project of Microsoft’s FUSE Labs, a division of Microsoft working on other research tools that compliment social networking sites like Facebook. So.cl was spotted back in November under the name Tulalip, but then, in December 2011, Microsoft officially announced it as a new way to learn for students. It was initially made available to students of the University of Washington, Syracuse University, and New York University.

To use this network, you have to ether log-in with your Facebook ID or your Windows Live ID. Since it is only in its experimental stage, I would prefer you to use your Windows Live ID. Here is a brief run-through of the application.

After you have logged-in, you will be asked to choose interests from a set of categories and follow the most popular users on So.cl. This leads you to the home page where you can explore the best of So.cl.

    Explore

On the explore page, you come across a variety of categories such as Food, Movies, Tech, Science, Startups, and other. If you click on one of the categories, a newsfeed for that particular category is displayed. This is basically the searches that people have made and posted to that category. The posts also shows a specific link when you your cursor on to it.

    Feed

Moving on to the next tab in the left navigation bar is “Feed.” After selecting which categories to follow, So.cl populates your Feed with all the posts being posted to So.cl by every user. However, there is also an option to choose feed related to your interest or the persons you are following. Moreover, you can also talk to the So.cl’s users via conservations.

    Post

In order to post something, you’ll have to search that thing via the bar top displaying message “What are you interested in?” So.cl uses Microsoft’s public Bing API, so you’ll get very similar results as you do through Bing search. You can post the desired result by clicking “Add to Post” at the bottom of each search result. Like on other social networks, you can like by clicking the smiley button, comment and share a user’s post. So.cl also includes a “riff” features that allows you to conduct the same search as that user, and a “tag” feature that lets you tag your posts and other users’ posts with specific interests.

    Profile

The feather is rather similar to other social networking websites. It shows your name with the same picture you have in Windows Live and posts you have made where comments can be made.

    Video Parties

Another feature of the service is called “Video Parties,” which appear to be Microsoft’s version of Google’s Hangouts. And similar to other social media websites, you can always comment on them and add videos to your list.

    Interests

The last section on the left hand side is Interests. It basically highlights the interests you are following and displays their own separate pages. You can see posts from the other users that are following the same interest page.

It seems that So.cl is more than a tool for students at present. It’s unclear whether Microsoft is really trying to build its own social network like Google has done with Google+, or if this is really just a testing ground for social Bing features.

Anyways, do let us know about your experience with So.cl.

Breaking: FBR Freezes Mobilink’s Bank Accounts

Breaking: FBR Freezes Mobilink’s Bank Accounts

By Aamir Attaa · Thursday, May 24, 2012 15 Comments

Mobilink logo thumb Breaking: FBR Freezes Mobilinks Bank AccountsFederal Board of Revenue, authority responsible for collection of taxes, has attached all bank accounts of Mobilink, while blocking all imports for the company, said a statement issued by FBR today.

Statement said Pakistan Mobile Communication Ltd (Mobilink) owed Rs. 8.6 billion to the exchequer on account of mis-declaration of Sales Tax and FED, for which Mobilink had appealed the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal for a hold.

However, the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal recently upheld the decision of LTU, Islamabad and confirmed the payable tax amount of 8.6 billion rupees.

On receiving the decision of the Tribunal, Syed Ijaz Hussain, Chief Commissioner, LTU, Islamabad formed various teams of officers headed by Commissioner, LTU, Malik Muhammad Ashraf to recover the amount from the company through attachment of Bank accounts, blocking of imports and recovery through suppliers of the company, which include other telecom companies as well as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority.

Mobilink said that it is in process of evaluating the situation, and their clarification on the development will come in a while. We will update the story when we get any word from Mobilink.

Sources close to FBR said that authority will now de-attach accounts only after recovering taxes and owed funds from Mobilink. FBR had carried out a similar operation for collection of taxes from PTA last year.

FBR statement confirmed that, as of today, all Bank Accounts of the Company have been attached and imports blocked accordingly.

FBR will take any further action on next working day, the statement said.

    Mobilink’s Viewpoint on the Matter:

Responding to FBR’s action, Pakistan Mobile Communications Limited (Mobilink) has clarified that the FBR’s ruling on Sales Tax and FED is sub-judice.

Mobilink in its statement said that company is one of the largest corporate tax payers in Pakistan, and has always remained at the forefront of making its due contribution to the nation’s exchequer.

Mobilink said that it paid PKR 34 billion as taxes in 2011 alone.

“Over its 17 year history of operations, Mobilink has remained committed to Pakistan, and respectful of all laws, including tax laws, which govern over Pakistan”, Mobilink’s statement concluded.

    The Great Tweet Ban

Hundreds of businesses in Pakistan depend on social media. Depend. Like financial gain and loss. Authorities decide to pull the plug without cause and notice, they cause the business to suffer financial losses. Facebook, Youtube, Google+ or Twitter, regardless of the tool, the ban on a platform is a problem. For the average internet user who simply absorbs the ongoing interaction, or the citizen journalist who uploads photographs and videos. Banning the platform is wrong.

As of an hour ago, the Ministry of IT banned Twitter despite assurances that no such action would take place. According to Interior Minister’s tweet last evening, “”Dear all, I assure that Twitter will continue in our country and it will not be blocked. do not believe in rumors.” The newly stationed IT Minister, Minister Raja Parvez Ashraf’s sole understanding of Social Media and the Web seems to be to block it. Blasphemy is the reason attached to every action so as to have every voice that stands up against it, deemed sacrilegious.

In the Click and Mortar world, if the KESC fails to deliver electricity which impedes the progress for a business, people protest. What’s to happen with all the virtual businesses that are unable to get through to their customers and partners via social media tools? What about all the good that platforms like Twitter actually enable people to do?

Twitter Blocked in Pakistan, Facebook Under Threat Too

By Aamir Attaa · Sunday, May 20, 2012 8 Comments

Twitter Logo thumb Twitter Blocked in Pakistan, Facebook Under Threat TooTwitter, a famous microblogging website, has been blocked in Pakistan since morning. Action has been taken on direct orders from Raja Parvez Ashraf, Minister for Information and Technology, our sources tell us. Though it is unclear if the ban is temporary or permanent in nature.

ProPakistani users are already reporting that Twitter isn’t accessible on almost every ISP in Pakistan.

It merits mentioning here that Twitter is still accessible in Pakistan through proxy websites and third party applications.

According to reliable sources, Mr. Ashraf directed for stern action against websites that are directly or indirectly publishing blasphemous content.

According to reports that we have got so far, PTA contacted Facebook and Twitter to them to restrict the access to the pages that were showcasing the blasphemous content but they didn’t oblige.

PTA constantly asked these websites to restrict these pages in Pakistan until they threatened that if even one page reached viewers in Pakistan both websites will be banned.

We are awaiting for an official stance and more details on the incident. We will update this story when and if we get any updates.

Industry sources say that Facebook is under threat as well, however, blockade of Facebook isn’t sanctioned so far.

The Blasphemous contest that encourages drawings of Holy Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him started in May 2010. These contests, that happen every year now, have cause agitation in many Muslim countries especially in Pakistan.

    More details to follow.

This Tweak For iPhone Brings A Former App Switcher Concept To Life – Download Now!

I love Apple’s iOS, I really do, but while I do see the value and benefits in other mobile operating systems like Android and Windows Phone, they just don’t provide the full mobile experience for me, at least. With that said, Apple definitely has some work to do to make iOS all that it can be and that includes addressing the blatant issues that the multitasking app switcher has had since its introduction in iOS 4.0.

Thankfully, the jailbreak community has consistently released tweaks and packages that bring changes to this area of iOS, dramatically increasing its usability, and in some instances totally rewriting the way multitasking is handled. One of the latest is the Switchy tweak by developer John Coates and exists to bring to life Brent Caswell’s switcher tray concept.

The package addresses a number of the issues which a large number of faithful iOS users see with Apple’s native implementation of the switcher tray. First and foremost, Switchy expands the tray to include two rows of app icons, therefore doubling the amount of screen real estate that is available when invoked after double-pressing the Home button. The immediate benefit of this is that the user can now see eight backgrounded apps rather than the standard four which Apple allows.

Secondly, Switchy appends the ‘Now Playing’ area of the switcher tray and adds additional information in the form of the artist and album information taken directly from the currently playing music track. It may not seem like a huge addition, but that area exists for a reason, and considering it has media buttons to skip through music tracks, it is a great idea to get a visual view of what is actually playing in the background. A dedicated settings page is also added to the switcher tray through the Switchy tweak.

The added settings page allows the brightness of the device to be adjusted, and also contains a much needed button to kill all running apps and get quick access to the native device’s Settings app. Adding a kill all button is something that had been sorely needed and although a number of tweaks already exist to do this, a lot of them are independent of the switcher area which isn’t ideal. Switchy is a really excellent example of a tweak that expands functionality, enhances iOS, but also manages to look and feel native, as if Apple themselves had built it.

Switchy is available to download from the BigBoss repository for $1.00, requires iOS 5.0 above and is currently only compatible with jailbroken iPhones and iPod touches.

WSID 2012 Appraises ‘Women and Girls in ICT’ With Changed Industry Faces

As we witness the showdown of another World Telecom Day, being celebrated worldwide on today’s date, what we have on plate is an industry that was in the news for high-profile reasons throughout 2011. Whether it is Pakistan taking second position to Turkey for holding the maximum number of growth-oriented companies in the Arab AllWorld Network, or Wateen coming back to life with various senior-level appointments, or Zong, Ufone and Mobilink sorting out their HR structures in non-competitive ways of doing business, the World Telecom Day this year is sure to be ring-mastered by faces different from the last few years.

Celebrating May 17th when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed off, World Telecom Day 2012 does reinforce the use of ICT to bridge the digital divide between societies and economies. This year however, the focus is on shattering a psychologically raised and culturally preserved glass ceiling when it comes to the concentration of women in technology industry.  In a world where IT and Finance Professions are treated as male-like as Civil Engineering and Wrestling, it is quiet obvious why the glass ceiling exists. Hence, a World Telecom Day dedicated to “Women and Girls in ICT” becomes the more needful if communities are to transform in the true spirit gearing in ICT. Women are indeed the foundation of healthy families, communities and societies.

Addressing the issue rather comprehensively, World Telecom Day 2012, being held today aims to bring focus to how ICT tools  can be used to eliminate gender inequalities faced by women from education to employment to status in society.  In a celebration of the 147th Year of ITU, a ‘Girls In ICT Portal’ has been put together by the ITU to highlight and profile women high-achievers in ICT, and provide information on scholarships/contests/trainings/internships being offered globally to empower women through ICT.

Why is that an even bigger need today? As Dr. Hamadoun I. Toure, ITU Secretary-General comments,”Women and girls are denied basic access to healthcare and education and to equal opportunities at work. They face segregation in economic, political and social decision-making and often suffer violence and discrimination. This situation is unacceptable and we must address it with all the means available to us”.

And that isn’t obviously far from ITU’s mission to use ICT to help countries reach the Millennium Development Goals. Enforcing ITU’s theme for the 2011 that was Better Life in Rural Communities with ICT, Mera Bagwal, Pakistan’s first e-village was seen to completion and actively invested in via Universal Services Fund in a project guarded by PSA. Other than contributing towards the society’s development through the Universal Services Fund, the various Telecom Operators carried CSR initiatives on their own payrolls to facilitate an execution of the resolutions reached for the community’s betterment on the World Telecom Day, 2011.

Having played their part duly each year, what remains to be seen is how do the new players on-board shape the local IT Industry’s commitment to the ITU and promote the intake of women in the local industry.

iOS 6 To Ditch Google Maps; Apple’s Own Maps To Debut With 3D Mode

With Apple and Google competing for supremacy on so many different levels, it’s been known for a while that the fruit company wishes to eradicate the current stock Google Maps offering in place of its own version. Sources of 9to5mac have offered confirmation, while also going into some detail about the upcoming improvements.

It will be one of the clinching features of the upcoming iOS 6, according to the report on the matter, and having included Google’s iteration since the release of the first iPhone back in 2007, the new version will step things up quite a few notches â€" offering a stunning 3D mode. Having purchased Placebase, C3 Technologies, and Poly9, the technologies and softwares of each company will be utilized to bring what’s billed to be a unique and captivating experience.

    mapsmockup

In the months leading up to iOS 5, Tim Cook’s company extended its agreement to continue Maps development on iOS, but with these latest revelations, it seems that deal is set to cease later this year, when the next iPhone â€" along with a possible scaled-down iPad â€" is revealed to the world.

Although the app will look and feel different throughout â€" right down to a new design for the icon â€" the centerpiece will be the 3D mode. By tapping a 3D button located in an easy-to-find location, users will be able to view streets and buildings and landscapes in a full-on Maps experience.

Having acquired C3 Technologies back in October, it’s been public record for a while that there would be 3D mapping in a future release. C3 is one of the most advanced providers of 3D mapping solutions, offering unmatched precision of 3D models which integrate seamlessly with 2D maps, satellite images, street-level photography as well as user-generated images

We fully expect iOS 6 to be revealed at WWDC ’12, although as already mentioned, it won’t be released until an accompanying device has been readied. Aside from the new Maps, there’s little else to report on at the moment, and although the home screen hasn’t really changed a great deal since the beginning of iOS, it isn’t thought Apple will go grandiose with Android-esque widgets this time around.
