Are You Game Enough?

Newly graduated graphic designers could have excellent career opportunities right here in Pakistan. This was the theme of a Gaming and Animation Conference held at the Indus Valley School of Art and Architecture on the 27th of January, 2011.

The conference, a first of its kind was jointly organized by the Pakistan Software Houses Association, P@SHA, and Pakistan Software Export Board, PSEB. The conference aimed to bring the existing gaming and animation industry in the local market on a platform where they could meet and talk of the opportunities available for students who are studying graphic designing, in the gaming industry of Pakistan.

A number of known names from Pakistan’s IT industry attended the event and spoke during the session. They talked of how the gaming industry in Pakistan was now flourishing and with its expansion, there were chances of better jobs and careers for all those who wanted to be part of the IT sector of Pakistan. Speaking at the event, Babar Ahmed, CEO Mindstorm Studios Events said that like this will encourage people to come into both gaming and animation industries. The “gaming industry has a tremendous scope,” he said, and these “events will encourage people to come into both gaming and animation industries.”

The Chairman of the Pakistan Software Export Board, Zia Imran, who also helped organize the conference, promised that more such events would follow. He felt moreover, that this “was an event to create awareness amongst art students as to what opportunities might exist in gaming and animation companies, and they have a huge role to play if this industry is to flourish in Pakistan.” As a token of encouragement to the youngsters about the talent and opportunities existing in Pakistan, he also added that even the official ICC Cricket World Cup computer game was being made by a Lahore-based company.

Shahryar Hyderi COO of Trango Interactive was another guest speaker at the event. He felt that as a result of this and other such events, the industry would most likely see an increase in the number of graphic-design students who intern at gaming houses across Pakistan. He also added that, for him, the two-fold goal of the conference had been fulfilled. “The event was productive because we got to see a lot of work from students’ side that we were not aware of so far, and the students themselves did not know about the gaming and animation studios of Pakistan, and it sort of opened their eyes to the options that are available there,” he said.

Jahan Ara, Chairman of Pakistan Software Houses Association, P@SHA, organizer to the event, hoped to replicate the ideas and success of the Gaming and Animation Conference held at the Indus Valley School. “This is just a first step,” she said continuing that she hoped they would “have a lot more of these conferences” because “these students are the creative human resource that” the Pakistani IT industry needs. She also hoped to work with other institutes and universities across Pakistan naming “University of Karachi, National College of Art in Lahore, IQRA University and various other places,” where she hoped they would be able to hold similar conferences that would benefit the students as well as the IT industry in Pakistan.
