CM Punjab Inaugurates Pakistan’s First IT University

Chief Minister of Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif, has fulfilled his promise, made in 2009, and has inaugurated Pakistan’s first IT university: Punjab Technology University (PTU). CM Punjab told that the university’s first campus has been opened at the sixth floor of the Arfa Karim Software Technology Park where about 1000 students, male and female both, will be enrolled in coming September. Out of these, 500 deserving students will study on a scholarship from Punjab Educational Endowment Fund (PEEF). He also confirmed that a permanent campus will be setup at Dera Rakh Chahal near Ring Road in collaboration with Middle East Technical University of Turkey where 6000 students will be enrolled. It was also highlighted that the Punjab government will provide 705 acres of land free-of-cost for the permanent campus which will be run by an autonomous board comprising of experts and philanthropists from the private sector. The provincial government is also hoping to build such universities in other provinces as well so that Pakistan as a whole can prosper.

Ufone Brings UReminder

It seems that Ufone will never get tired of introducing new unique services for its customers. Ufone has introduced a new service for its prepaid and postpaid customers named “UReminder” which will help them set reminders for important tasks. A great feature of this service is that the customers can not just set reminders on their own numbers but they can also set reminders on other numbers, both on-net and off-net. The customers can either have pre-recorded messages as reminders or they can even set reminders in their own voice. The prepaid customers will be charged at PKR 2.5 plus tax/ week while the postpaid customers will be charged at PKR 10.00 plus tax/ month. In addition, there will be IVR charges of PKR 0.50 plus tax/ minute.

Google Applies for Custom Top-Level Domains

In its official blog, Google announced that it was participating in the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers application process for new top-level domains. The post suggests that the company is aiming for some pretty interesting purchases. The brief blogpost outlines four categories of domain purchases Google is planning to make, and an example of each:

  • For trademarks â€" .google
  • For core business products â€" .docs
  • For better user experience â€" .youtube
  • For creativity â€" .lol

In June 2011, ICANN approved a plan that would allow people to apply for new gTLDs. Companies and other major organizations will now be made to not only purchase relevant .com URLs, but novel top-level domains as well. Purchasing just a single new domain costs $185,000 up front and another $25,000 a year to keep the domain. ICANN has received more than 2,000 applications and will be presenting the entire list by mid of June 2012.

Govt. Lowers GST on Telecom Industry: From 19.5% to 16%

The Minister for Finance, Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh has said that, to avoid multiplicity of rates and decrease the burden on the consumers, GST rates of above 16% in different industries, including Telecom sector, has been brought down to 16 %. Cellular industry has long been asking for the reduction of GST and removal of activation charges on mobile phone SIMs. Budget 2012-13 has finally taken care of GST but SIM activation charges are still there which will be borne by cellular operator. Government is expecting that by reducing GST on telecom services, revenue will increase in the FY 2012-13. Federal Government will be distributing PKR 44.596 billion, against last year allocation of PKR 40.542 billion, as GST on telecom services among the provinces. Government has also set non-tax revenue targets of PKR 730.331 billion during FY 2012-13. Outside this figure, government also expects to receive PKR 79 billion from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority’s (PTA) .
