PTA Completes Targets for Year 2011

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) is proud to announce that it has achieved 95% of its targets for the year 2011. To discuss the same, a special meeting took place at PTA’s headquarters headed by Chairman PTA Dr. Mohammad Yaseen. The meeting was attended by Dr. Khawar Siddique Khokhar, Member (Technical), and senior officials of the authority. At the meeting, the Divisional heads presented  performance of their respective divisions for the year 2011. Moreover, they presented their expected targets for 2012 which were approved by the authority. The chairman was quite pleased with the authority performance and asked the team to work with passion for the success of the authority.

Victory for Internet blackout protest

As covered earlier on E-Panorama, Wikipedia and some other famous websites were shut down for 24 hours in protest against the SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act). The protest has worked and the US congress has decided to put off theses piracy bills. The Senators said that they have had discussions on the matter and have shown a green signal on reaching a compromise in the coming weeks. Additionally, it was noted that US congressional will not be supporting the two bills as a result of the online protests that branded the bills a danger to Internet freedom. They have also said that serious actions should be taken to restrict illegal practices and avoid these kinds of bills which could have many unintentional consequences.

PTCL Double Up Unlimited Package

Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) has recently introduced its new package called the Double Up Unlimited Package. The customers will be able to call on mobile at a discounted rate of Rs. 1.25 per minute. They will even get their PTCL line rent and IPTV service charges waived off. As per the offer, they can also make unlimited On-Net Local & NWD calls. The package is also offering free Wi-Fi modem with an unlimited broadband downloads. However, Rs. 1000 per month will be charged if a customer downloads more than 50 GB of data since the company wants to provide quality broadband service to all customers. The package is available in 5 different speeds of internet i.e. 1 Mbps, 2 Mbps, 4 Mbps, 6 Mbps and 8 Mbps. The charges start from Rs. 1,999 and goes up to Rs. 7,999, depending on the speed of the internet.

Megaupload shut down in Violation of piracy laws

Just a day after a 24-hour blackout of the most popular websites, federal law enforcement stepped in and shut down one of the world’s largest file-sharing sites Megaupload.  Megaupload is a file-sharing website that that allows users to upload and transfer files that cannot be attached on an email. The website has been shut down on charges that it systematically supports widespread piracy of copyrighted music, movies, video and other intellectual property. The two corporations, Megaupload Limited and Vestor Limited, have been accused of costing copyright holders more than $500 million in lost revenue from pirated movies and other content. The individuals face a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison on racketeering charges, five years for conspiracy to commit copyright infringement, 20 years on money laundering charges and five years on related charges.
