PEMRA Raid On Illegal Channels

Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, PEMRA’s enforcement teams recently raided several illegal cable TV networks that had been operating in various parts of country. These networks had already been issued several warnings asking them to shut down illegal activities. These included illegal showing of excessive ‘CD channels’. These channels were termed “a source of content piracy and plagiarism against which PEMRA is taking serious action,” according to a press release issued by the agency. In this regard, PEMRA also suspended the transmission licenses of at least seven television channels that had been airing unethical and misleading documentaries related to health as well as other products in direct variance to PEMRA and the laws under which the Ministry of Health operates besides deviating from the terms of their given licenses.

 

Samsung Pakistan Has Over 184,000 Facebook Fans

Samsung, a global technology leader, recently launched one of its latest Smartphones, the Samsung Galaxy Y, S5360, in Pakistan. While the set is priced at PKR 13,999 in the local market, Samsung Pakistan launched a ‘Smart-Bid’ campaign on Facebook. The campaign allows people to ‘bid’ for this phone set, and get it at an even lesser rate online. Bidding starts at PKR 1000 only. The campaign has played a very crucial role in increasing Samsung Pakistan’s Facebook fans to over 184,000. This figure is, as a matter of fact, the highest amongst all Consumer-Electronics Companies operating in the country. Social Media experts said that a successful social media campaign should engage fans in campaign activities… which the Smart-Bid campaign manages to do thereby making it one of the most successful in the country.

 

Mobilink Offers Best IR Service

Mobilink, one of the most popular Telco companies in the country, provides the best International Roaming, IR, services locally, according to a survey PTA. The survey was conducted as part of PTA’s effort to ascertain that only the highest quality services are provided to cellular service subscribers, especially those who often travel abroad. In the survey, operators were judged for both the quality of roaming services as well as billing parameters. Mobilink’s services have also been ranked “excellent” amongst other local telecom service providers in Pakistan, according a “customer’s perception survey” held earlier.  According to Jahanzeb Taj, VP Marketing at Mobilink, the organization “has always striven to deliver unmatched services’ quality to subscribers.” For him, the ranking reflected Mobilink’s efforts and consumers’ trust.

 

Nokia Pakistan- Djuice’s Developer Workshops

The lower-end market segment is now looking for quality applications on the cheaper devices also. Recognizing this fact, Nokia Pakistan and Djuice collaborated to start a series of Developer Workshops to provide training to interested developers. The training will focus specifically on developing applications for S40 devices. The first workshop has already been conducted. It was held at Telenor’s regional office where the participants were given hands-on training. Tony Torp, the Nokia External Trainer shared details of the currently available development tools that could be used to develop applications for S40 devices. He also said, “It was wonderful to interact with the enthusiastic developers of Karachi and share the S40 background and provide hands-on training on the tools available to work on, for the S40 platform.” Rabia Azfar Nizami, Business Development Manager EDX, Near East, Nokia said, that her organization has in the past organized similar workshops in Pakistan. She said, “The workshop was geared towards channelizing the strengths of local developers and providing them resources to develop locally relevant mobile apps for S40 devices, which are highly popular in Pakistan.”
