Finally! Time to Move on and Find another basket
by GadgetGizmodo
I write this post with a very heavy heart. I registered the domain for this blog on Dec 31st, 2006 and officially started off with my My First Post on Jan 13, 2007.
That tells me that I have invested a time period of over 4 years, translated into over 35,000 hours and I am happy and very much satisfied with what I have done. Heck! Technorati even tells me that this blog has surpassed most other tech blogs to be included in the list of âTop 100 Technologyâ and âTop 100 Gadgetsâ blog around the world.
However, with much satisfaction and success comes the challenge to maintain and live up to what people expect from you. This blog, I can proudly say, at least in Pakistan, started what I call the âpedia frenzyâ and since then things have gotten out of hands for me. Not only did people steal the identity of this blog (all the blogs of the same name on .net, .eu, .in, .org etc are not owned by me) but they declined to credit me for something that I started and to be honest I do not feel bad about it.
This blog, my baby as I call it, taught me how to love doing something in life and still make it lucrative. Trust me, it wasnât about the money, it was never about the money, it was about how one in the information-era is capable to consume and share information. Thatâs what it was all about but in the course that I followed I found many people were there with me for their personal benefits, to which I feel no remorse; all of them probably had their reasons.
Then, a recent incident, with this blog made me re-think the whole strategy on which I am working. Google banned AdSense on this blog passing a reason that does not make a bit of sense to me. This blog, as Google says, is violating the Adsense quality guidelines for user-experience. For me, it doesnât make sense as this blog has always been in compliance with all policies and there is not a single reason why our blogâs revenue should face such a major slump.
But then, it hit me. Itâs not just AdSense. It is how God wants to communicate with me and tell me that I need to move on. No one should put all their eggs in the same basket and thatâs what I have been doing for a very long time. This blog will always remain dear to me and this is in no way a good-bye, this blog will keep running even if we make any revenue out of it or not.
The purpose of this blog post is to let our readers and friends know what I am going through and how they can extract a lesson out of it. God is watching and trust me! karma is a bitch. What I want you to learn from my story is not how you can become a millionaire with blogging rather how you can make a living out of something you love and something you want to do.
I will be shifting my main focus to iPhoneism.com, a new blog that I recently started with Adnan Farooqui. He has served as the editor at this blog for quite some time and will be my partner in the new project. I would like to thank him for all his work and dedication.
For those who wonder what I am doing right now, I work for a digital media agency called bramerz and I am very happy with my day-time job.
Update: This blog is not shutting down and will continue to operation normally with new posts being updated daily.

Sony To Compensate PSN Users For Downtime, Stolen Data?
by GadgetGizmodo
Itâs really not been a great week for Sony. The news that their PlayStation Network had been hacked was bad enough, but then the Japanese electronics giant was forced to tell its 70 million users that their personal data, and even their credit card details may have been stolen.
Once users had finished cancelling every card theyâd ever even thought of attaching to PSN, the thoughts then turned to compensation. Just what will Sony do to make things right? According to a statement from Sony, theyâre working on something â" but theyâre not letting on just what theyâll be doing to appease us.
In the companyâs latest Q&A session regarding the current problems, Sony did its best to ease playersâ fears for their saved game data and trophies by assuring them that their data will simply re-sync as soon as PSN is brought back online. But what about those users who subscribe to online games such as DC Universe Online? According to Ars Technica, Sony is working on a âmake goodâ plan.
"To thank players for their patience, we will be hosting special events across our game portfolio," SOE said in a statement. "We are also working on a âmake goodâ plan for players of the PS3 versions of DC Universe Online and Free Realms. Details will be available soon on the individual game websites and forums."
The same goes for PSN as a whole and streaming service Qriocity. Seybold said that Sony is "evaluating ways to show appreciation" to users for the downtime, but specifics as to how that will be done are currently unavailable.
Ars Technica also notes that, according to gaming blog Kotaku, Sony has brought the FBI into the investigation into whatâs happened. Weâre sure that will help the vultures as they seek to sue Sony, too.

Flashback with: Pervaiz Musharraf, Former President of Pakistan (Interview conducted in 2007)
by GadgetGizmodo
Editorâs note: In last decade, when Former Pakistan President Pervaiz Musharraf was at the pinnacle of putting the country in a stable economic position, we had put in a request to the Presidential Secretariat to have his comments on where IT and Telecom were headed. Though we never got a chance to conduct the interview in person as the followup we wanted, the Secretariat was kind enough to have the former Presidentâs remarks to our questions. Of course, this was thrilling enough considering this was the same President who continually talked about IT and Telecom being in the top 5 sectors that would change Pakistan as we know it. Hereâs a portion of the transcript that we ran in Netxpress back in early 2007.
What is your vision for the Information Technology and Telecomâs role in the future of Pakistan?
At the World Summit on the Information Technology, the global leaders endorsed that we should move towards creating an Information Society in order to compete with services in these two sectors. We have come a long way in putting Pakistan on the right track in pursuit of sustainable growth in IT and telecom. It is evident from the fact that almost 2% of GDP comes from Telecom alone, however we still need to do a lot more in terms of promoting growth of these sectors and to attract FDI and business from around the world. Lower costs of factor of production in our country should prove as a catalyst in achieving this objective.
What ground work has been set out in the few years to ensure that Pakistan reaches this goal?
Pakistan allows foreign investment in the telecommunication sector on a repatriable basis. In addition, foreign investors are now allowed to hold 100% repatriation of profits (previously it was restricted to maximum of 60% profit repatriation).
Government of Pakistan in view of the emerging global trends and growing national needs for telecommunications development, approved following three policies for deregulation and opening up of the telecom sector: fixed line telecom deregulation policy, cellular mobile policy and broadband policy. Major objectives of these policies are to promote infrastructure development, increase in foreign and local investment in the sector, harness local entrepreneurship, increase quality and choice of affordable services for businesses and consumers, extend competition amongst licenses, implementation of these policies in a fair and transparent manner have thus far achieved tremendous success. Several of these new licenses have started their operations in the country resulting in paradigm shift in the telecom landscape in Pakistan.
Pakistanâs telecom sector is cited as a model for developing countries because of success of its policy and regulatory framework, deregulization, privatization, excellent growth and investment in the sector.
As a very important initiative towards providing universal access to telecom services and to increase out reach of these services to rural communities, the Government has brought legislation for developing Universal Service Fund (USF) framework to enhance tele-density and to provide basis telecom services to the under/ unserved areas of the country. Contributions raised from USF would be transparently deployed and the prime focus on Human Resource Development and Capacity Building.
Other major initiatives that the government is actively pursuing include:
- Mobile Number Portability (MNP)
- Introducing/ Implementing Equipment Identity Register (EIR) to combat threat of mobile headset theft in the larger public interest.
- Convergence and 3G roadmap being prepared with a consultative process.
- Human Resource Capacity Building plans have been identified and dialogue being carried out with the stakeholders and universities to launch projects.
- Frequency and interference issues are being resolved on priority basis.
- Further legislative3 framework is underway to check anticompetitive behavior to facilitate sector growth and all rules to support policy to be put in place with in current calendar year.
In addition to the phenomenal growth of in telecom sector during this time, if the Government is to create an enabling environment through sound policy and facilitation, the privatization of PTCL will help introduce new innovative services to the customer and create a health competition in the sector.
What kind of opportunities do you see for the IT industry to help promote a more positive image of Pakistan in the international market?
The image of Pakistan and growth of the IT industry have a close relationship according to our surveys and reports by professional consultants the distorted image of Pakistan, which is largely based on misinformation has a negative effect on the industry. When business visit Pakistan, they are pleasantly surprised that the situation on ground is quite different then the preconceived image. We are taking various measures to improve this perception. As the IT industry grows in Pakistan and attracts more international players, they would get a first hand view of the country and the positive image would begin to emerge.
Except for increasing the number of foreign investment into Pakistan; how else would you measure the IT and Telecom industryâs success?
The success of the IT and Telecom industry has various parameters with FDI being only one component. The contribution to GDP, creation of jobs and the availability of the services to citizens will enable the creation of a competitive industry.
When the IT policy was created it was first time in the countryâs history that the private sector has created something for the government to implement. How open will the government of Pakistan be to changing or creating policy in order to help boost the local industry?
The government is quite receptive to the feedback and the contribution of the private sector. This is evident in the process followed for the development of major policy documents in recent years including the fixed line telecom policy, electronic transaction ordinance and electronic crimes act. In all these cases, workshops were held with the private sector and documents were placed on the web for general feedback before they were submitted to the cabinet.

The Results Are In, Apple Tops Microsoft In Quarterly Sales, Profits
by GadgetGizmodo
Microsoft today released its Q3 2011 financial results and theyâre good with the numbers beating those expected by all the analysts with net income reaching a staggering $5.23billion.
Despite these results however, Apple has managed to beat them with regards to profit, as noted by TechCrunchâs MG Siegler.
Last October, despite Apple pulling ahead in revenue, the profit gap was about $1.1 billion in Microsoftâs favor. Last quarter, that gap was down to roughly a $600 million. And now, rather remarkable, itâs over $700 million in the other direction â" a $1.3 billion swing in just one quarter. And you can probably expect that trend to continue.
When it comes to revenue, Apple is firmly in the lead too with $24.6 billion compared to Microsoftâs not-to-be-sneezed-at $16.43 billion â" staggering numbers no matter which way you slice it.
Oh how things have changed in just a few short years. With Apple posting record sales figures quarter after quarter, the Cupertino outfit shows no sign of letting up while Microsoftâs Windows Phone 7 is proving to be a similar story to the companyâs older Windows Mobile â" namely uninspiring. Perhaps their new partnership with Nokia will help things along in this regard.
No matter which side of the Apple-Microsoft divide you might fall on you have to admit, both companies know how to make money!

Google Talk Brings Video/Audio Chat to Android
by GadgetGizmodo
Awesome updates from the Google Mobile team just keep rolling out. Recently Google released a Google Docs app for Android, and now comes the ability to video/voice chat using Google Talk. Similar applications, like Fring and Tango, have sought to bring a facetime-like experience to Android. Now, with video chat being built-in to Google Talk(on Android 2.3+), the use of alternative apps will be a choice, not a necessity. Hereâs an overview of what you can expect in the potentially game-changing Google Talk update:
What does it do?
The update brings the ability to video and voice chat with other gmail users. Users can chat with other Android users, along with those using Google Talk on their computer. Calls can be made over 3G and 4G(depending on carrier), and, of course, Wi-Fi.
How does it work?
Next to your Google Talk contacts, a video/voice chat button pops up. Simply press the button to initiate a call. Text chats are overlaid on top of the video so you donât have to leave your call to read them. If you leave the chat to do something else, the video will pause, freeing up your screen. However, the audio will continue like a normal call, with the video resuming upon entering the call once again.
This looks awesome! When can I get it?
The Google Talk update will be distributed to Nexus S devices via an over-the-air update for Android 2.3.4. Some time in the future, this update will be released to other Android 2.3+ devices as well. Keep in mind that the Nexus S is a developerâs phone, meaning that a public release of the new Google Talk could be as far away as 3 months.
Hereâs a video from Google demoing the new Google Talk update:
While the Google Talk update isnât necessarily imminent, itâs definitely something to look forward to. Weâll be sure to let you know once this update becomes publicly available, so stay tuned!

Can FM Stations Be More Social?
by GadgetGizmodo
FM Stations in Pakistan started tapping into the community for news and updates long before Twitter hit the scene. Citizen Journalism sits at the heart of community radio. But unlike the social media which allows users to interact because of the power of its interactive media, radio, like other traditional media, has settled into a one-way street â" you have an update, make a call and have your voice recorded so it can be streamed at the appropriate time to the listeners. Unlike social media where you are in control of not only what the update is and how you send that update out but also when you stream it out.
But this is all common and rather old knowledge. So why bother to bring it up now?
Well, I am an avid listener of Apna Karachi FM 107. Have been since the very beginning. If you want a traffic update about anything happening in Karachi, chances are the RJs and production team at FM107 will know because they have a loyal community that keeps them updated.
But that controlled delivery of information irks me. Despite the fact that their site finally went up online, listeners still have to wait until the RJ makes a traffic update announcement. Should the stations make use of GPS maps or citizen reporting sites such as See N Report to encourage more interaction amongst the community? Should FM stations use RSS feeds to push updates to user cell phones? Should SMS alerts be used?
For a radio station, what should their digital strategy be? Should they even have one?
What do you think? What advice would you share with the radio channels to make them more savvy of their listeners?

Best Buy iPad 2 Sale Possibly Starting This Weekend?
by GadgetGizmodo
When reports circulated that Best Buy was holding back iPad 2 stock, many thought the retailer had some sort of falling out with Apple. However, it looks like that is not the case. Engadget got its hands on a leaked screenshot which hints that a new Best Buy iPad 2 sale could be starting this weekend.
It is still not known what sort of an event is Best Buy organizing as part of a massive iPad 2 sale? If its just Best Buy selling iPads, thatâs not something to get excited about, is it? The best guess would be that Best Buy would offer some sort of a deal with the iPad 2, a bundled gadget or accessory maybe? Donât pin your hopes up for a discount on the iPad 2, considering the fact that Apple generally dislike discounts and the iPad 2 just came out recently. What is Best Buy going to offer then? That weâll obviously know once this event at Best Buy kicks off.

Ready to âgive backâ to the environment?
by GadgetGizmodo
Only this morning at least one popular, mainstream Pakistani newspaper carried the news that the government was considering increasing âthe annual energy import bill to a whopping $50 billion from $12 billion now, while energy sector companies asked the government on Tuesday to substantially raise domestic energy prices and sell natural gas and electricity to all consumers at a uniform rate by removing slab benefits being given to domestic consumers.â Meanwhile the Water and Power Minister, Syed Naveed Qamar felt that âtwo weekly holidays should be enforcedâ to allow saving approximately 300MW of electricityâ¦
Â
The question now arises whether this would be a truly feasible approach for all the organizations operating in Pakistan, both national and multinational. The move of declaring both Saturdays and Sundays public holidays had been made last year with allegedly great success since 300MW of electricity was saved. However, despite its effectiveness, it unfortunately, does not reasonable to miss the entire weekend simply because the country and its resources are unable to meet the energy and power demands that working Saturdays make on them. What then is to be the key to conserving energy and our resources?
Â
The cons of âoff Saturdaysâ
The first thing that all businessmen must realize is that conserving energy is almost synonymous with trying to preserve the environment and the Earth. This is because the energy that we wish to conserve is mostly obtained by burning fossil fuels, coal, oil or gas. Not only are these fossil fuels only available in finite amounts, but both their extraction and burning are very harmful for the atmosphere. The extraction of the power resources as they are called is a long, expensive process in itself, but later on, burning these fuels in power stations produce harmful greenhouse gases which heat up the Earth. As the Earth heats up, the atmospheric temperatures also rise making us feel âhotâ or âcold,â and then air conditioning (or heating systems) are required to stabilize the temperature to something more suited to human beingsâ needs. This simple explanation is enough to make one realize that preserving power resources and the Earth are closely interlinked.
Â
Consequently, having a long weekend is not the solution that either organizations or governments should be looking for. No matter how much the employees may enjoy a long weekend, looking at the idea from a business perspective shows that Saturdays off would probably not be a very good idea. What then is the solution? Some alternative measures that all organizations should follow to reduce their energy consumption.
Â
How to slash energy consumption?
According to Munib Khwaja, the CSM at APCC, âwhen a building is being planned, then a lot of things can be done at that time which will be beneficial to users later on. Like the building management, the lightning management, BMS (building management system) and light intensity can be changed to meet intensity requirements. In this case, more dependence is also placed on sunlight so that solar lightning may be used to lower electricity consumptionsâ so that eventually a green, intelligent building is built.
To illustrate his point, Munib Sahib also used his own organization as an example. Since they use a lot of computers, Munib Khwaja spoke of how they cool down all their instruments. âWeâve started using rack like structures,â he said, âand to lower the heat produced by these racks, we bring cooling racks near to them. This allows cool air to blow from the front of the rack, while hot air goes out from the back.â The hot air is also captured by the cooling unit in the same row, so that long panels or low paths to recover heat are not required. All in all, the procedure has helped âminimize the room load and energy consumption has been lowered by nearly 40%.â
Â
Furthermore, organizations could begin by making a minor investment and getting all incandescent lights replaced with energy savers. These energy savers consume only half the amount of energy that incandescent bulbs do. Employees could be asked to use the sunlight as much as possible, switch off unnecessary lights, lower the speed at which air conditioners run and switch off monitors when not at their desks. Put together, the measures would have a far better chance of success at lowering the energy consumption at offices. Also, while it might even let organizations save enough energy throughout the week to warrant their opening at least half the day on Saturdays!

Israel Trying to Develop Relations with Pakistan Through Facebook
by GadgetGizmodo
By Asad Ur Rehman · Friday, Apr 15, 2011 43 Comments
Social Media especially Facebook and Twitter are very much popular all around the globe. Every one is using them whether he/she is a student, businessman, housewives, religious scholars etc.
Name anyone from any class of life and you will find him a user of any of the above mentioned media.
The popularity is increasing by every passing day. We have already seen that businesses are advertising and winning customers through Facebook whereas recruiters are recruiting potential candidates through Facebook too. Some are making friends while others are searching for their life partners. All this and many more activities like games, information gathering are being carried out through these social networks.
All of the above mentioned activities may not look odd to anyone but what is interesting about the Facebook is that it may be the first time that social media is being used to develop relationships with other country.
As we all know that Pakistan has no diplomatic relations with Israel and infect Pakistan hasnât recognized Israel till yet but in an attempt to foster relationships with Pakistani people, especially with youth, Israel has decided to use much popular social media Facebook.
They have created a page on Facebook by the name of Israel in Pakistan.
At first, by the title of Page, it looks as if Israeli embassy is working in Pakistan but when you go into âinfoâ tab, only then situation gets little clearer.
The information mentioned on the page is as below:
Since Israel and Pakistan do not enjoy formal diplomatic relations, this online embassy serves to foster friendship between nationals of Israel and Pakistan on Facebook. Hopefully we can soon build real embassies in Pakistan and Israel, Shalom!
Mission
âThe Embassy of Israel in Pakistan has created this Facebook page as a resource of information on Israel and provides updates on the Missionâs activities to the general public.â
For the time being they have also allowed user postings on the page and till date 2350 people have joined the page. The page is being advertised rigorously through Facebook adverts. Till now most of the postings on the page contain hatred and racism against Jews & Israel.
Letâs see how much they will be successful in their attempt to develop relations with Pakistan. But one thing that people should do that despite the hatred with Israel they should comment or post in a civilized manner as they are representing Pakistan.
Right now people are posting in an offensive, uncivilized manner which is bringing disrepute for them and country as well.
Moreover this matter should be taken at Pakistan Government level and government should devise a strategy in this regard too.

Safari In Mac OS X Lion Gets âDo-Not-Trackâ Tool
by GadgetGizmodo
Remember Mac OS X Lion? Well its currently in private developer seeding and Apple plans to release it later this year in Summer. Word from WSJ is that Apple is incorporating the âDo-Not-Trackâ tool inside Safari for Mac OS X Lion. Details, after the jump.
Â
Do-not-track tools in browsers automatically send out messages to websites and online-advertising networks requesting that usersâ movements around the Web not be tracked. The system will only work if Web companies agree to respect peoplesâ tracking preferences
With Safari also adding support for âDo-Not-Trackâ tool, only Google Chrome is left without the tool, both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer offer this tool in their latest versions. However, it should be kept in mind that the major ad networks on the internet have yet to agree with this system, before the tool can be of any use.
Weâd love to here your thoughts on this. Do you think that major ad networks would agree to this system? If not, what would be the grounds on which this system is going to be criticized upon? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Microsoft today pitted its own mobile browser up against the iPhone 4â²s Safari and Googleâs Android browser running on a Nexus S, though there was no mention of which versions of their respective software the two challengers were running. All three were put through their paces by Microsoftâs own speed reading test website. The results, unsurprisingly, favored the boys from Redmond.
WinRumors managed to capture the fun and games in video, but the gist is this â" IE9 smoked both Android and iOS. While Microsoftâs mobile browser (which is basically the desktop app, according to MS) managed to complete the test at an impressive 22 frames per second, Android could only must 11 FPS with iOS languishing in third with just 2 FPS.
While these results are impressive for Microsoft, itâs again worth pointing out there was no mention of the software being used on the two competitor handsets. While weâre not suggesting Microsoftâs tests arenât accurate, itâs something thatâs worth bearing in mind when watching the video. With Appleâs iOS 4.3.x bringing improved Java runtime performance amongst other tweaks, it would be interesting to see whether that was the version Microsoft used.
Regardless, 22 FPS is an impressive result and Microsoft should be commended for pushing its mobile web browsing team so hard. Interesting days for WP7 ahead!

$48 Rebel Micro Sim Card For iPhone 4, Permanent Unlock Without Jailbreak!
by GadgetGizmodo
Just yesterday, we told you about a new unlock for iPhone 4, 3GS & 3G on any baseband running any iOS using CutYourSimâs permanent unlock solution. For those who thought the price was too high ($169), here is another one and this time its much cheaper. Rebelâs Micro Sim card for iPhone 4 costs merely $48 for the lite version and $65 for the pro variant. Once again, the solution works without needing any jailbreak. It also lets you update the SIM Software and will continue to work even if Apple redesigns the iPhone.
So whatâs the deal between lite and pro versions? Here is your answer:
The pro version ships with a custom iPhone 4 SIM tray that keeps the electronics inside the handset while the lite option does not require a special SIM tray for your iPhone 4 and the components are located on the outside of the handset, which isnât aesthetically pleasing. Both solutions unlock iPhone 4s with basebands 1.59.00, 02.10.04, 03:10.01 and 04.10.01 and support iOS 4, 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.1, 4.3 and 4.3.
So now the question is, would you still wait for a software unlocking solution from iPhone-Dev Team or are these new, permanent unlocks should do the trick for you? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section below!
