Youngest MCP Arifa shows signs of life

The New Year spelt some happiness for Arifa Karim’s family as the world’s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional showed some signs of brain activity on New Year’s Eve. “Arifa started showing some brain activity and twitched her fingers, her father Lt-Col. (Retd.) Amjad Karim Randhawa, said. Arifa Karim, now enrolled in an A-Levels college, had been the world’s youngest MCP at only nine years of age back in 2004. She suffered a cardiac arrest on December 22, 2011 and is still admitted at the CMH hospital in Lahore in critical condition. Doctors had given up all hope for her survival and in fact contemplated switching off her life support, saying that there was ‘no hope’ for the talented young Pakistani. We pray for her recovery!

 

WordPress & MGID Inaccessible in Pakistan

Users of WordPress and MGID have allegedly been unable to access their accounts. The problem has been occurring on the PTCL, Quebee and Nayatel networks since Sunday. The users complained that they could neither view nor upload on their accounts without some sort of disruption. WordPress is a free blogging website while MGID is an online advertising network. Both websites are popular in Pakistan with WordPress ranking 40th and MGID 108th according to Alexa’s ratings. Meanwhile, although authorities have been blamed for the supposed ‘blockage’ of the sites, the reports could not be confirmed.

 

Website to Promote Pakistan’s Tourism Industry

The website, www.great.pk, launched at New Year, is to be the next site to promote Pakistan’s virtually non-existent tourism industry. The site will publish information regarding Pakistan’s tourism hotspots and picturesque locations in the country which are worth a visit. “The website will be a milestone for the development of tourism in the country and can provide guidance to tourists who want to explore the natural beauty of Pakistan,” said Naveed Baig who hopes to better market the tourism options that the country possess and in doing so help Pakistan’s Tourism Industry. One unique feature that the site incorporates is the opportunity to share pictures and videos, while users may connect with each other via the site’s chat service.

 

Content Providers to Follow Regulations: PTA

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority, PTA has warned the country’s Content Service Providers, WLCSP, not to carry out their operations without likewise following the authority regulations, including getting registrations and approvals of all their operations before embarking on any commercial deal with other Pakistani companies. The reason for these statements has been the fact that an increasing number of short codes are being used by commercial organizations to multiply the reach of their SMS. The short code usually appears on the SMS along with the company’s name. The act is believed to be a marketing and communication ploy.  The Pakistan Telecommunication Re-Organization Act, 1996 (K) (2) has stated that service providers, who are operating commercially for number planning of specific companies, need the approval of PTA also. Now, PTA has also further instructed content providers to get registered within the next two months or their originated short codes would be terminated.
