Plants Help Grow Businesses – or do they?

When we were kids, we celebrated Earth Day with all the zest and aplomb of childish hearts and enthusiasm, believing, that if we sang out ‘Earth Day’ songs loud enough, we could help save our planet. But then again, those were also those times when a lesson spent outside the actual classroom was bliss. Growing up doesn’t change the inbuilt need that humans have of spending at least some part of their day outdoors, or amongst the calming effect of trees and flowers, though in our jam-packed schedules, most of us tend to forget that.

With Earth Day just around the corner, it might not be a bad idea to revisit some memories of classes spent out-of-doors, or better still, bring some of the pleasant greenery that gave us so much joy as kids, into our offices with us. Since in the practical world of jobs, office and work schedules that must be followed, most professionals forget to take time out and benefit from the luxury of spending a few minutes outdoors every day. Eventually, and the time period varies for different people, this omission tends to cause stress-related health problems. According to the UK Health website, it is work-related stress like this that is the second biggest cause of health problems in United Kingdom alone. Imagine what it must be like then in a developing country like Pakistan where we do not even have the statistics to prove it!

Theoretically speaking, for any business to flourish, it would be in the employers’ best interests if the employees worked constantly and well and took no breaks in the shape of sick leaves, casual leaves or paid leaves. However, this employers’ ideal could only be realized if the office, the atmosphere and the work was so interesting that employees just would not want to leave or could not bear to stay away from office on extended vacations. However, the heat from computers, the noise, of a couple of employees talking amongst themselves, even the office boys coming in to clean up the place creates noise and disturbances which causes the stress levels of most employees to rise. Over time, as this stress level accumulates, it leads to employees getting sick, taking leaves, and in extreme cases, employees no longer find the work as interesting as before and try to switch jobs. The work suffers, and with it the business.

As an employer, or even the sort of employee who is looking to settle down in one business organization and progress significantly therein only, it is essential to make the office and the office atmosphere as interesting, calm and friendly as possible. Regular bonuses are not enough. It is just as essential to have potted office plants growing and placed at strategic points around your office to ensure that not only is the office décor amazing, but that it also helps relax the employees and increases work output. A study by the London South Bank University showed that plants can prove efficient in absorbing plants at high frequencies. This is especially true of two plants commonly known as Madagascar Dragon and Weeping Fig. Naturally, this means that you put up plants all around your office. Tastefully done, this will not only help to make your office look a happier and brighter place, but will ensure that employees want to come in to work also, (and do not want to leave early either!) The plants would also help to absorb the small office noises that can prove so distracting and irritating to most of us. For starters, try planting Devil’s Ivy or the ‘Money plant’ as it is called in Pakistan. Does not require a lot of care, grows quickly, and will ensure you and your employee a happy atmosphere where you can work in peace. Moreover, this simple expedient will also help you take a step towards saving your planet, just the way you had always hoped to.
