Nokia App Summit in Pakistan

For the first time ever, a Nokia App Summit will be held in Karachi, Pakistan. It will demonstrate Nokia’s recent development efforts showcasing the relevant apps developed by Pakistanis for enhancing mobile experience.

The event will be attended by people from the corporate and social development sectors, local developers and media. It will be held on 16th and 17th July at Marriott Hotel, Karachi.

The Event will feature a Conference, followed by a Developers’ Workshop and an App Exhibition. The Conference will begin with a speakers’ session, followed by a panel discussion. After it, a Workshop will be organized to train the local students and App Developers for developing app for Nokia mobiles. The app exhibition aims to highlight the local talent to the industry and visitors.

Some of the main partners of the events are P@SHA, djuice, CIO Pakistan, The Express Tribune, Apna Karachi FM-107, and Brandsynario.

Facebook Oversees Users’ Chats

Facebook is keeping an eye on its users’ chat to detect any suspected behavior. Sources have revealed that Facebook is not going to tolerate any illegal and immoral activity through chats and in case it finds anything suspicious, it will report to the police.

The screening involves monitoring of chats for suspicious words, phrases, or language, which will be detected by the scanning software. Any exchange of personal information or foul language found suspicious will be flagged by the software. It will be monitored by Facebook Security employees who will determine whether to notify police or not.

The use of people’s personal information by Facebook may come under scrutiny, owing to privacy concern. However, Facebook’s Security Chief, Joe Sullivan, justified the company’s move commenting, “We’ve never wanted to set up an environment where we have employees looking at private communications, so it’s really important that we use technology that has a very low false-positive rate.”

Uploading of Android Jellybean Begins

Uploading of Android 4.1, called ‘Jelly Bean’ has been started by Google. The new version will be available to the users of Samsung Galaxy Nexus across UK, US and many parts of Europe.
The new version was introduced in Google’s I/O 2012 in June. It comes with advanced features than previous version. It is being seen as a competitive rival to Apple’s iOS6, especially its voice assistant Siri.

Jellybean offers Voice Search and Google Now, which will be more advanced in providing information to users about weather, travel, sports etc.

Apple has alleged that Google has infringed upon its patents for these features. Earlier, Samsung Nexus Smartphones were banned by a US district court, but the Federal Court lifted the ban.

Betaworks Acquires Digg for $500,000

Once a prominent name in the era of social media, Digg will now be sold to a New York-based technology group, Betaworks. Digg will unite with News.me, the daily briefing service.

Digg enables users to submit and vote news and vote to decide which news should be promoted as the highest. Founded in 2004 by Kevin Rose, Digg became one of the 100 most visited sites of the world. In 2011, the company saw decline in its traffic, especially because of the popularity of Twitter.

Matt Williams, Digg’s Chief Executive, said about the deal, “Over the last few months, we’ve considered many options of where Digg could go, and frankly many of them could not live up to the reason Digg was invented in the first place â€" to discover the best stuff on the web. We wanted to find a way to take Digg back to its startup roots.”

The deal was made for $500,000 which is comparatively much less considering the funds the company has raised previously.

Is Yahoo Safe?

Not a good news for Yahoo users as Yahoo has been hacked, as reported. Sources reported anonymous hackers posted more than 450,000 yahoo passwords online. The web where passwords were posted stated that the hack was meant to be a warning. A statement on the web read, “We hope that the parties responsible for managing the security of this sub domain will take this as a wake-up call, and not as a threat. There have been many security holes exploited in Web Servers belonging to Yahoo! Inc. that have caused far greater damage than our disclosure. Please do not take them lightly.”

Yahoo apologized to the users confirming the hack of Yahoo Voices, its news service. Yahoo said, “We are fixing the vulnerability that led to the disclosure of this data, changing the passwords of the affected Yahoo! users and notifying the companies whose users’ accounts may have been compromised.”

Moreover, Yahoo has asked users to change their passwords frequently to ensure security. For the time being, the question is: Is yahoo really safe? Better put, is any third-party service over internet actually safe?  What happened to Yahoo has already victimized Twitter and LinkedIn.
