by GadgetGizmodo
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Appleââ¬â¢s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.
I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.
As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.
I believe Appleââ¬â¢s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.
I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

Samsung Galaxy S II For AT&T, T-Mobile And Sprint Announced, Available This Fall
by GadgetGizmodo
Ever since the Samsung Galaxy S II became available in Korea and Europe, many in the United States have been wondering when the new smartphone would finally reach the countryâs carriers. That moment has arrived, with the announcement that the Galaxy S II will be available on Sprint, AT&T and T-Mobile this fall.
The Galaxy S II is Samsungâs newest Android smartphone thatâs on the cutting-edge of the smartphone market, both hardware and software-wise. The Galaxy S II sports a 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex-A9 processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, an 8-megapixel camera with flash capable of recording 1080p video and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. This beast is also capable of outputting fully uncompressed 1080p video via HDMI.
If you live in the United States and have been looking to get your hands on one of these smartphones, you will not be able to, on three carriers: AT&T, T-Mobile and Sprint â" essentially every major US carrier except Verizon. Interestingly enough, the device shows some slight design differences in each carrier, aside from the carrierâs logo, as you can tell from the picture below.
No matter the carrier, the Galaxy S II will feature 4G-esque connectivity with WiMAX support on Sprint and HSPA+ on T-Mobile as well as AT&T. All Galaxy S II devices will also have access to on-demand âpremium contentâ free of charge from several of Americaâs major TV networks, namely NBC Universal, Paramount, MTV, Warner Bros., CBS and FOX, through Samsungâs Media Hub. In addition to free content, the Samsung Galaxy S II will also support movie rental services such as Android Movies and Netflix streaming right out of the box.
The Galaxy S II comes with the newest version of Android, known as Gingerbread, baked right in. On top of Android, Samsung offers its proprietary TouchWiz 4.0 interface, which is supposed to make the operating system smoother and easier to use, yet many high-end users would rather like to use Android without any customizations. Nonetheless, this feature will likely be welcomed by Samsungâs target demographic, mainly comprised of people who just want a really user-friendly, yet powerful, smartphone.
Thereâs no wording yet on price, yet expect it to be along the lines of a subsidized iPhone 4. Who is going to be the first to get this phone?

I want you to be confident that Apple is not going to change. I cherish and celebrate Appleâs unique principles and values. Steve built a company and culture that is unlike any other in the world and we are going to stay true to thatâ"it is in our DNA. We are going to continue to make the best products in the world that delight our customers and make our employees incredibly proud of what they do.

Tim
Many of us know Tim Cook, and we know that he has directed the company day-to-day before. For instance, when Steve Jobs went on medical leave he asked Tim Cook to take his position for that time.
We at iTD also believe that Steve Jobs resigning from the company wouldnât hurt too much. One of the things we can be sure about now, is the lower priced iPhone coming to life, as Tim Cook was the one saying they donât want the iPhone to be âjust for the richâ.

Nokia developer forum hacked, still unavailable
by GadgetGizmodo
BANGALORE
(08/30/2011) â" The community section of Nokiaâs developer site was hacked, and some membersâ e-mail addresses have been accessed, the mobile phone maker said.
The part of the site has been taken down, and instead delivers a statement from the company about the hack.
Nokia said that during its ongoing investigation of the incident, it discovered that a database table containing e-mail addresses of developer forum members was accessed, by exploiting a vulnerability in the bulletin board software that allowed an SQL injection attack.
âInitially we believed that only a small number of these forum member records had been accessed, but further investigation has identified that the number is significantly larger,â the statement said.
Nokia did not specify when the site was hacked, though it is likely to have happened last week, according to some reports.
The database table records includes membersâ e-mail addresses and, for fewer than 7 percent who chose to include them in their public profile, either birth dates, homepage URL (uniform resource locator) or usernames for AIM, ICQ, MSN, Skype or Yahoo services. Sensitive information such as passwords and credit cards details were not compromised, and the potential fallout of the hack is likely to be limited to unsolicited mail, Nokia said.
After addressing the initial vulnerability, Nokia said it took the developer community website offline as a precautionary measure, while it conducts further investigations and security assessments. The developer community section was still down on Tuesday.
Soon after the hack, visitors to the community pages were taken to a third-party web page containing an image of Homer Simpson, the character from the TV series The Simpsons, and a message, warning the company to patch its security holes, according to reports.
The hack of Nokiaâs developer site is the latest in a series of hacks of corporate and government web sites. An April hack on Sonyâs PlayStation Network and Qriocity online services forced Sony to close both networks while it rebuilt cyber defense systems. In all, it took two and a half months for the full resumption of service.

IndianDefence Hacked by PCA to Avenge Defence.PK Defacement
by GadgetGizmodo
By Muhammad Ali Raza · Wednesday, Aug 31, 2011 18 Comments
In response to recent hack of Defence.PK, Pakistan Cyber Army has defaced IndianDefence.com, terming it as a revenge for defence.pk defacement.
PCA says that it successfully penetrated into IndianDefence, comâs server â" they issued screenshots of defaced pages and SQL dump.
Pakistan Cyber Army claimed that this was a targeted defacement.
In an email sent to ProPakistani PCA officials said that they donât deface/hack websites randomly, instead their attacks are highly targeted and based on past defacements by Indians hackers.
They warned Indian hackers to not to hack Pakistani websites again, or they will see the wrath in similar manner in future too.
It merits mentioning here that an Indian hacker, named protector, had defaced Defence.PK â" a highly active Pakistani forum for defence oriented and related content for Pakistanis. In response to which, IndianDefence.com (which got hacked today) is an equally high value website for Indian defence corners.

Leaked iPhone 5 Parts Suggest A Thinner Design And A Better Camera [IMAGES]
by GadgetGizmodo
Appleâs fifth installment in the iPhone series is still surrounded by pockets of mystery. Whilst we have a rough idea of many of the features, there are still contradictory rumors and leaks that suggest otherwise.
One of the characteristics weâve come to expect is a thinner design. Not only due to leaks and reports, but because it is the Apple way to strive for thinner and lighter in every superseding product it releases.
GreekiPhone has gotten a hold of some components said to be for the device which further corroborate the thinner design theory. Interestingly enough, the parts also indicate that the volume buttons will switch sides and be situated on the right-hand side of the device rather than the left. Iâm not sure if this makes a great deal of difference in terms of usability. Most people are right-handed, and will have to use thumbs to operate the volume rather than fingers, although it will have a slight effect if, like me, you use both volume buttons for activator commands. Then again, with the Cupertino poaching jailbreak community members left and right, whoâs to say weâll even have a jailbreak?
As you can see from the above image, the camera module is also significantly different from the one which currently resides in iPhone 4 devices. It is largely expected that the highly-successful iPhone 4 snapper will get a tasty upgrade from 5 megapixel to 8 megapixel. Such a significant improvement will only further propel the unprecedented popularity of the iPhone camera, which has become a huge hit with amateur photographers on the likes of Flickr.
Frankly, the thinner design and sharper image capturing are two of the many features consumers are looking for when the announcement is made. Many other features are still floating about which give us a relative picture of whatâs to be expected. A larger screen is on the cards, and Apple could quite easily add a few extra millimeters without compromising the Retina Display, although it would be a disappointment to lose pixel density. With all the issues that Apple has had with screen production of late, we probably wonât be getting an improved display, despite the fact that it will probably be larger. Those looking for true HD from an iDevice will have to hang on for the iPad 3.
It is also hoped that we could see a 64GB (or larger?) version of the iPhone this time around, to give those with an extensive music, video and app catalogue more space to play around with. With iCloud on the horizon, though, that seems somewhat unlikely, as Cupertino will allow for significant extension of storage through the wireless medium.

Exciting news for casual and serious gamers: A new game developed by some of the folks behind the popular Halo series of science-fiction action video games will be released next week for Appleâs iPad.
Developed by the recently set up Bungie Aerospace â" which is a small developer studio dedicated to help independent gamers launch their mobile games. It is basically the iOS branch of Bungie, Inc. which itself is a multi-platform game development studio. The game weâre talking about today is Bungie Aerospaceâs first title.

Crimson: Steam Pirates will be an episode-based game and there will be a total of 8 episodes (or voyages) with the first one being released next week.
It will also come with Bungieâs legendary stats-tracking system as well as integration with Facebook.
Command your fleet and your Steampunk crew using an elegant action interface. Crimson: Steam Piratesâ turn-based gameplay provides an addicting mixture of strategy and action as you anticipate your enemiesâ moves and counter them, luring them into a deadly hail of weapons fire while uncovering the mystery brewing in the Caribbean.
- 8 voyages that begin the tale of Thomas Bloodâs adventures in the Caribbean
- 2 "Pass-and-Play" multiplayer scenarios
- Over a dozen types of ships, subs, and airships
- Over 20 unique crew members whose special abilities enhance gameplay

Irene Wreaks Havoc on East Coast Communications
by GadgetGizmodo
SAN FRANCISCO (08/27/2011) â" As Hurricane Irene starts to move north along the East Coast of the United States, the first reports of its affects on communications systems are coming in.
The Federal Communications Commission on Saturday activated the Disaster Information Reporting System, a online reporting tool that helps the agency understand the scope and location of disruptions to communications. So far the damage is minimal, but the full scope may not be clear until the beginning of next week after Irene clears the coastline.
Coastal North Carolina seems to be the most affected, with many of the 130 cellular sites in that region currently inoperable, Betanews reports. Another 215 may fail soon however, as they are running on backup power with power outages widespread. Wireline customers are also affected: the FCC says 8000 are out in North Carolina, and another 4000 in Virginia.
The hardest-hit location was Carteret County in southeastern North Carolina. That locale includes Cape Lookout, where the eye of Irene made landfall on Saturday around sunrise.
Amid all the bad news is some good news: public safety communications are so far reporting no disruption or outages. But if youâre out of power or the cell towerâs down, thatâs not going to do a lot of good if you canât make the call out.
Either way, this is only the beginning of what could become a serious nightmare for communications utilities as Irene moves north. The sheer size of the storm â" roughly the size of Europe by some accounts â" and the fact that it is hitting the âmegalopolis,â means the effects will be magnified. And cell phones â" especially smartphones â" are otherwise a way for people in the affected area to
If a direct hit is taken in this region â" now increasingly likely â" it could mean massive disruption. It could also mean extended periods of time without communications in hardest hit areas due to the scope of repair work necessary. Officials have been warning about this for days, so those most at risk know of the risk in âriding it out.â
Often, people focus on the risk to life and limb from property damage, but being cut off from any kind of communication can be just as dangerous. Thatâs why its so important to get out of harmâs way when youâre told to, because you may not be able to make the call for help when you most need it.

iPad 3 Production To Begin In October, Without Samsung As Components Supplier?
by GadgetGizmodo
Over the last few weeks, it has become clear that Apple has already begun working on a new iPad, presumably to succeed the 6-month-old iPad 2. According to a report, the companyâs suppliers will begin assembling it in small quantities, presumably for testing purposes: all of them, except Samsung.
Apple, along with most major hardware makers, doesnât make its own products. Instead, it hires outside suppliers, primarily based in Asia, in order to build all of its hardware, including computers, the iPhone and the iPad. Up until now, the company in charge of building the displays for the latter has been Samsung along with LG Display, yet Samsung has allegedly been ousted as one of Appleâs supplier of multi-touch displays. While thereâs no mention of it in this report, itâs also likely that the Cupertino company might be looking into ousting Samsung as the maker of the rumored quad-core A6, which are expected to power the iPad 3. As we reported in July, itâs also possible that Apple might phase out Samsungâs involvement slowly by introducing a secondary supplier for the A6 at first before completely ousting Samsung, mainly due to the amount of intellectual property Samsung hold regarding Appleâs processors. Samsung is currently the only supplier of A4 and A5 processors, which can be found on the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 respectively.
Indeed, Samsung seems to have been completely left out of all contracts for making the next iPad, which leads us to assume that it wonât take part in the manufacturing of future Apple products. This is not surprising, given the fierce legal fights both companies have been in over the last recent months, all over alleged intellectual property theft in Samsungâs Galaxy product line, including the Galaxy Tab, which competes directly with the iPad. Itâs understandable that Apple might not want to spend money on one of its main competitors, especially not while itâs suing it for patent infringement.
The iPad 3 will allegedly be produced in small quantities beginning in October, presumably for testing purposes. If Apple uses the same release cycle as it did with the iPad and the iPad 2, then the iPad 3 may finally be unveiled to customers in the first quarter of next year. While not much is known about this device, itâs expected to include a higher-resolution screen and enhanced internal hardware.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Sends Email To Apple Employees: Apple Will Not Change
by GadgetGizmodo
You probably know by now that Appleâs co-founder Steve Jobs has stepped down from his position as CEO. To take his place, Steve Jobs recommended Tim Cook to be the next Chief Executive Officer of the company.
According to a new report by Ars Technica, Apple new CEO has emailed Apple employees that Apple will not change; it will be known as it is today. He also said that it was his privilege of a lifetime to be appointed the CEO. Hereâs the full email:
Team:
I am looking forward to the amazing opportunity of serving as CEO of the most innovative company in the world. Joining Apple was the best decision Iâve ever made and itâs been the privilege of a lifetime to work for Apple and Steve for over 13 years. I share Steveâs optimism for Appleâs bright future.
Steve has been an incredible leader and mentor to me, as well as to the entire executive team and our amazing employees. We are really looking forward to Steveâs ongoing guidance and inspiration as our Chairman.
I love Apple and I am looking forward to diving into my new role. All of the incredible support from the Board, the executive team and many of you has been inspiring. I am confident our best years lie ahead of us and that together we will continue to make Apple the magical place that it is.

Whatâs next for Apple?
by GadgetGizmodo
NEW YORK (08/25/2011) â" Apple for years rallied around its charismatic co-founder, Steve Jobs, so itâs only natural now to question whether the company can retain its market dominance and magic with a new leader.
Jobs, who stepped down as the companyâs CEO on Wednesday, has stamped his personality on Appleâs operations and products. Under Jobsâ leadership, Apple not only sparked the personal computing revolution in the 1970s and 1980s, but more recently established new directions in technology with iconic products such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad.
Jobs has been replaced as CEO by heir apparent Tim Cook, formerly the companyâs chief operating officer, who was Appleâs public face during Jobsâ medical leaves. Cook is considered an operations person, but has shown his ability to run Appleâs day-to-day operations during Jobsâ leaves of absence.
Cook has the drive and has also silently been at the center of Appleâs recent successes, said Edward Marczak, an author and executive editor of MacTech magazine.
âWhile the market may worry, those who have stuck by Apple through it all know thereâs only more excellence ahead,â Marczak said.
But there are questions about his ability to continue the spirit of innovation embodied by Jobs, whose headstrong management style inspired workers and helped the company think ahead of market trends. Cook previously was responsible for Appleâs sales and operations, and has revamped the retail side of the companyâs business with the establishment of Apple stores.
âCook is very talented. But he doesnât have Jobsâ innovative spirit â" itâs just not in the DNA,â said James Post, professor at the Boston University School of Management, in an interview.
Jobs will remain at Apple as chairman and will be involved in design and product decisions, so his influence could be felt on Appleâs products for years. But Cook was clearly Jobsâ first choice for CEO, and in a letter he âstrongly recommendedâ to the board that it appoint Cook to the position.
Some company observers believe that Jobs has established a blueprint for Apple to follow and churn out hit products, laying the groundwork for Cook to succeed. Nevertheless, Jobsâ absence from daily operations will leave a creative and management void. Without Jobs, whose charismatic management style inspired workers to think outside the box, there are questions about how long Apple will be able to sustain its ability to lead market trends.
âVisionaries are easy to find, but great visionaries who can go from concept to reality to execution to mass marketing are rare indeed,â Post said.
Companies of all stripes can easily go astray, at least for a while, when their founders leave, Post said. Companies like Walt Disney, Ford and Dell are examples of companies losing direction after their founders left, returning to stability only after a period of time passed.
Apple will lack Jobsâ âmy way is the only wayâ approach to business decision making, Post said. Cook will have to devise a new way of making effective decisions that drive the company to continue developing successful products.
Jobs founded Apple in the mid-1970s with Steve Wozniak but was ousted in a boardroom struggle in 1985. He returned in 1996 to save the company from near ruin, and returned it to profitability a few years later.
Jobs turned Apple into a successful consumer electronics company by crystallizing concepts into a series of popular products. Apple revolutionized the music industry with the iPod music player and iTunes store, and created new product categories with the touch-controlled iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet.
In 2011, Apple for a short period became the highest valued company in the world in terms of market capitalization, passing Exxon Mobil.
As CEO, Jobs was an inspirational leader and had a knack for reading user sentiment and future technology trends, said Owen Linzmayer, author of âApple Confidential 2.0,â which describes Appleâs history.
Jobs had âthe vision and power to force Appleâs engineers to use technology to create products that serve usersâ needs, minus the frills, without bogging them down,â Linzmayer said.
Apple has the products, marketing capabilities, and managers to continue to dominate markets, Linzmayer said. But the technology industry moves fast, and Apple will need to figure out ways to remain a step ahead of its competitors.
âLonger term, who knows? Things happen so rapidly in this industry, and new competitors and technologies can appear out of the blue, that itâs hard to predict what will happen to any firm, much less a company thatâs been as innovative as Apple,â Linzmayer said.
Over the years, Apple has competed with the likes of Google, Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, Dell, Samsung and Research In Motion in the areas of computing, smartphones, operating systems and entertainment. Today, Apple has a near-unassailable position in tablets and a strong position in smartphones.
Jobs ruled Apple with an iron fist as CEO, and his obsession with secrecy drew critics. His rejection of Adobeâs Flash technology from the iPhone polarized the IT industry, and tight policing of the App Store led to criticism that Apple was too insulated.
The secrecy was part of Jobsâ paranoia, which is warranted in a business that depends on innovation and market pizzazz, Post said.
âThe cloak of secrecy was an extension of Jobsâ personality and obsessions. After his departure, the company could ⦠become more open and transparent,â Post said.
Jobs also personified an anger that hooked users to the perception of Apple being an underdog, said Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates.
Jobs gave Apple fans the feeling that Apple was being treated unfairly, and users were attracted to the notion of a company fighting its way through a jungle of hostile competitors such as Microsoft, which preyed regularly on Appleâs ideas, Kay said.
The new management would do well to maintain the passion of the companyâs fans, Kay said. Jobs inspired loyalty, the likes of which a future CEO may not be able to match, which could take away some of the companyâs edge.
Another big challenge for Cook and Appleâs management team will be to replicate the success Jobs had with creating a series of products that coalesced under a single umbrella and offered tight interoperability, a major reason the company has been so successful. Products such as the iPad, iPhone and Apple TV are sold as stand-alone devices, but can also work together. For example, users can stream movies from the iPad or iPhone to TV sets connected to the Apple TV device.
In the end, the onus will lie on Cook to sustain Appleâs growth. Cook inherits qualified staff, products that are market leaders, and a pipeline of future offerings that have Jobsâ stamp of approval. Research of new products at Apple starts well in advance â" speculation around the iPhone began in 1999 when Apple registered the iPhone.org domain name. The New York Times in 2002 wrote about a product possibly combining phone and PDA-like features being under development. The iPhone was finally unveiled in 2007.
Cook will be assisted by Jonathan Ive, the senior vice president of industrial design, who is one of the creative forces behind the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Ive has been discussed by Apple enthusiasts as someone who could succeed Jobs as Appleâs CEO, but he is not considered a leader. Other executives include Philip Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, who was also considered to replace Jobs.
Cook may not bring Jobsâ panache and passion to the job, but Appleâs management team and product pipeline will likely ensure that the company wonât stumble, at least in the short term.
âKeynotes certainly wonât be as interesting without Jobs, but I doubt anyone is going to take over and do anything incredibly stupid or turn the company into a boring place to work,â Linzmayer said.

Steve Jobs Quits as CEO of Apple, replaced by Tim Cook
by GadgetGizmodo
To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:
I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Appleâs CEO, I would be the first to let you know.
I believe Appleâs brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

From 2007 To 2011, The Evolution Of The iPhone [INFOGRAPHIC]
by GadgetGizmodo
The iPhone, Appleâs smartphone device, has been a company-defining gadget, helping the Cupertino outfit reach the dizzy heights of one of the worldâs most valuable companies.
Capitalizing on the success of the iPod range, which was literally untouchable on the MP3 market, the iPhone has seen many changes and has improved significantly since starting out.
IntoMobile has produced a simple yet interesting infographic outlining the riseof a device which may still not have yet reached its peak, with the 5th device expected in just over a month. Literally every aspect has seen a dramatic improvement, and iPhone mania isnât currently showing any signs of petering out.
The first-gen iPhone featured a 412MHz ARM processor, and kick started the buzz which now surrounds the App Store. By the time the 3GS arrived over two years later, the App Store had over 50,000 apps from which to further enhance the device. Additionally, the 600MHz ARM Cortex processor brought a more console-like experience to the palm of our hands, and many developers such as Gameloft and EA, realizing what was happening, keenly migrated over to the App Store and began bringing titles such as FIFA and Rainbow Six to iOS.
Thanks to the introduction of the Retina Display and the toughened-glass finish, things got a little more beautiful and classy when the iPhone 4 was released at the end of Q2 last year. The A4 processor brought a whole new dimension to speed and gaming. Multitasking was introduced, allowing us to balance sending emails and SMS messages alongside with the more important stuff, like playing Angry Birds or Cut The Rope. In addition, the iPhone 4â²s 5 megapixel camera gave us the ability to take very good pictures, and became a favored choice among amateur photographers.
With the iPhone 5 reckoned to include an A5 chip, there is a lot more scope for the speeds to improve and for smartphone gaming to take an even more dominant stance over rivals such as the fading PSP and Nintendo DS-like devices. It is largely expected to feature an 8 megapixel camera, which would certainly go down a treat on the likes of Flickr and, erm, Photovine. With a larger Retina Display and an even thinner design, as well as the possibility of a gesture-based home button, we certainly have a lot to look forward to when it is released sometime in early October.

T-Mobile will also be selling the iPhone 5 come October [Report]
by GadgetGizmodo
What would an iPhone launch be without rumors, right? Well right on the coat tails of yesterdays report of Sprint carrying the next generation iPhone, it seems that reports are coming in that T-Mobile will also be the next carrier to sell the iPhone this October.
Â
Following our report yesterday that Appleâs upcoming iPhone 5 will be arriving on the Sprint network, a contact within T-Mobile who claims to have been briefed on the matter has informed us that, in addition to arriving on Sprint at launch, the iPhone 5 will arrive on T-Mobileâs network at launch as well.
The informant, who requested to remain anonymous, went on to claim that the iPhone 5 would also operate at 3G speeds on T-Mobile US network. Current unlocked iPhone 4 units can only operate at at 2G âedgeâ speeds on T-Mobileâs network, and lack certain network-dependent features, such as Visual Voicemail.
This would mark the first time that all 4 major carriers all sold the phone at the same time. However, we do know that there are close to 1 million iPhones on T-Mobileâs network already, but now they will be official. Which also means for all you T-Mobile iPhone users (including myself), will get 3G instead of Edge speeds on our devices.
This should come as no surprise to anyone as AT&T has announced that they would be purchasing T-Mobile USA, which should become final at the end of the year. T-Mobile was also reportedly testing prototype iPhones on its network, to ensure 3G compatibility with the device. We even reported the T-Mobile started selling Micro-SIMs, which we figured would be for the iPhone. This is just another thing we will have to wait for during the iPhone announcement coming in just a few weeks now.

Top Chinese official warns Sinaâs Twitter-like service
by GadgetGizmodo
BEIJING (08/24/2011) â" A top Chinese communist party official has urged the countryâs Internet companies to firmly put an end to the spread of fake and harmful information, a statement that appears to be a warning to one of Chinaâs most popular Twitter-like websites.
Liu Qi, a member of Chinaâs politburo and party secretary of Beijing, made the comment on Tuesday as he visited the Chinese Internet firm Sina, according to state media reports.
Liu praised the company for its achievements with Sina Weibo, a Twitter-like microblogging platform with 200 million registered users. But he also urged Chinaâs Internet firms to improve the management and application of new technology, while working to stamp out harmful information over the Web. He also called on Chinaâs microblog users to be responsible and counter the spread of fake information.
China heavily regulates the Internet, going as far as blocking websites and deleting Internet postings in the case of content deemed to be anti-government or politically sensitive. U.S. sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have been blocked in the country.
Sina Weibo and other domestic websites fall in line with the orders of Chinese censors by routinely removing sensitive content. In the case of Sina Weibo, the service has previously prevented users from searching for posts containing certain terms, like âHillary Clintonâ and âInner Mongoliaâ, because they related to sensitive topics such as protests and Internet freedom.
Despite the censorship, Sina Weibo has become a platform for users to expose scandals and criticize government officials. This happened, for example, in July after a high-speed train wreck in China killed dozens. The crash immediately became the most discussed topic on Sina Weibo, with users critical of officials for inadequate train safety.
âItâs not only a place for keeping track of celebrities, but itâs actually become a place where news is broken,â said Michael Clendenin, managing director at research firm RedTech Advisors. âItâs become the fourth estate of China. Itâs really become a new media.â
As a result, the Chinese government has been watching the platform closely, clamping down when necessary, Clendenin said. In the case of the train wreck, Sina Weibo moved quickly to phase out discussion of the topic because of the anger vented against authorities.
But Sina Weibo has also become a hotbed for rumors and fabrications. In a recent case, a Chinese woman showed off her wealth through her account, claiming she worked with a company that had ties with the Red Cross Society of China. This caused Sina Weibo users to believe the charitable organization had been allowing employees to misuse donated money. The woman later apologized, saying she had lied about her employment.
âMicroblogging holds a lot of potential to be very damaging, to organizations and to peopleâs reputations in China. And this of course is raising the interest of the government,â Clendenin said.
Ao Deng, a 24-year-old Sina Weibo user in Beijing, said the service excels at providing information other media outlets donât have. But recently, she has noticed Chinese Internet censors are deleting more Weibo posts.
âThere are a lot of rumors, which will just anger people. But sometimes people talk about whatâs really happening in the country,â she said. âYou can rely on yourself to determine what is fake and what is true.â

Steve Jobs passes the Apple to Cook
by GadgetGizmodo
By Fawad · Thursday, Aug 25, 2011 0 Comments
Around 2025, a new book on the history of the world will be written to include the Information Age as a changing time in human development. There is little doubt that leading the pack of revolutionaries on the list will be the man who co-founded the fruity icon in 1976, and returned in 1997 to revive and take the company to stratospheric heights; Steve Jobs.
Yesterdayâs announcement by Jobs to step down as CEO of Apple and pass the role to long-time colleague and COO Tim Cook comes as the technology legend continues his battle against cancer.
The resulting 7% dive in company shares is enough evidence of the value held to the vision and management of this one man.
Having been ousted in 1985 by the board, Jobs returned in 1997 to bring Apple back from bankruptcy and created the innovative ripples that have resulted in smartphone and tablet wars of 2011.
The legion of fans bent upon paying top dollar for Apple goods has shown no decline. Murmurs of unhappiness with strict control over content are overcome with the sheer ecstasy of simplicity that formulates the user interface of every Apple product.
The question buzzing around is if Apple is Jobs, and his departure ends the line of radical innovation. So while incremental changes will continue to give consumers iPhone 10, iPod 12th generation and iPad 7 in the coming years, there could be a dearth of something different, something mind-blasting.
There are supporters on each side of this argument. Analysts have come out with strong cases that Apple will continue to prosper under Cook, a 13 year veteran of the fruit, and the product line will remain unaffected.
But sceptics have been quick to reach for the history books and highlight Appleâs early decline between 1986 and 1996. With increasing competition on the technology front, version changes are unlikely to keep the current crop of consumers happy for long.
While it is likely that Jobs has groomed like-minded individuals in Apple, the next 6 months and upcoming launches of new devices will be a stringent test for the new crop. For now, the technology sector stands up to applaud a legend and one of the most creative minds of the generation.
Wish you a speedy recovery Steve âAppleâ Jobs.

Android 2.2 Froyo Caught Running On An HP TouchPad! [VIDEO]
by GadgetGizmodo
A new video uploaded today shows an older version of Android running on HPâs now-discontinued webOS-based TouchPad tablet.
The video has been uploaded on YouTube by a user who goes by the name of msacra. It has a bit of a questionable backstory, which goes something along the lines of msacraâs coworker ordering a 32GB $99 HP TouchPad from Best Buy and, on receiving the tablet, it is found that â" instead of webOS â" Googleâs Android OS is installed on it.
The videoâs description states:
A coworker ordered his HP Touchpad for $99 from bestbuy, this is the 32g, when he got it, it came with android already on it, I just ordered mine, so if anyone knows how android go on it, please let me know.
It seems quite unlikely to us for HP to ship an TouchPad unit with Android on it. Perhaps it is a testing unit which HP may have used to see how Android runs on TouchPadâs very capable hardware, like they reportedly did with the iPad (webOS was found to be twice as fast on the iPad as compared to its performance on the TouchPad).
One comment on the YouTube video suggests that it may be a leaked device having a dev build of Android installed by Quirc. We looked around and couldnât find anything related to Android/HP for the term Quirc. Do let us know if you find anything about it.
Our readers should know that a group of four developers have initiated the TouchDroid project. The project aims to bring Android 2.3 âGingerbreadâ to the HP TouchPad with Android 4.0 âIce Cream Sandwichâ expected to be ported over when it arrives later this year. This technically would make the $99 HP TouchPad the cheapest and fastest Android tablet.
HP announced the discontinuation of all webOS-based smartphones and its only tablet â" the TouchPad â" on 19th August. The decision comes from all the negative press feedback and the absolutely dismal sales of the TouchPad.
There is a great chance that this might be fake. However, it is equally likely that this just might be real. The TouchPad packs Android-friendly hardware, which would make running Googleâs mobile OS on it relatively easy. Hereâs the video itself, it is quite shaky so donât watch if you get nauseated easily:
Weâll inform of you of any updates regarding this story. The uploader has vowed to dump /system and post its results to the internet, which would definitely reveal more interesting information.

The Necessity of Patents
by GadgetGizmodo
The sudden surge in patent-acquisition displayed by Apple, Microsoft, Google and Oracle has brought about a surge in the publicâs interest in patents, the necessity of buying up patents and the relevance of the act.
To briefly sum up the current situation, Microsoft, Apple and Oracle brought thousands of patent from Nortel Networks, an organization tethering on the brink of bankruptcy. Google, in what is widely perceived as an act of retaliation, agreed to pay $12.5 billion to take over Motorola Mobilityâs âvast patent stash.â Motorola Mobility is a struggling cell phone maker whose recently launched Android tablet, Motorola Xoom did not take off as well as the makers had hoped either. All in all, what resulted were two companies with lot of patents on their hands, but not enough of the required quality of products to support them. Hence it was easy to buy off patent from them.
When buying patents, expert feel that while anyone could easily spot a low price/earnings ratio, it is the out of which companies hold undervalued patents that actually provides the real investing edge. As of now, the interesting situation that has emerged around us today is what provides a golden opportunity for investors. According to Nir Kossovsky, executive secretary at the Intangible Asset Finance Society, a Pittsburgh research group, the ârecent boom in patent sales is lifting patent values in general.â This in turn is what is actually providing investors with a good opportunity to invest in the âpatent-line.â
To find out which patents are the right ones to buy at any given point in time is easy and a simple study of the digitized records of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office is sufficient to discover which patents can be bought. Patents are generally bought by organizations keeping in view similar patents that have recently been bought by rival organizations to ensure that in no way is your product(s) hampered later on in its course by patent suits. That apparently seems to be the case with the tech giants of today.
An article I read online stated, âThese patent grabs suggest tomorrowâs dominant Smartphone or tablet is a three-legged stool built from software, hardware and communicationsâ"and companies are in a race to add rights to whichever legs they are missing.â The example seemed to be a very apt one, o I added it here. Only, my question remains, are patents really that important when working to develop product that will sell well? Do organizations have to fall back onto haggling for patent rights when trying to create products that will rock the world? Unfortunately, I believe that somewhere along the way, patents too are a necessity, whether we like it or not. Organizations, at the end of the day, are there in an effort to generate business, and to make a profit, one need to stay alert, and ahead of their competition to do well in any sector of the business industry. Even if to do so, they need to buy out a large number of patents.

Is Blogging Overdose in Pakistan Hindering the Innovation?
by GadgetGizmodo
By Syed Talal · Tuesday, Aug 23, 2011 9 Comments
Blogging has become an integral part of life for a lot of people. The main reasons in my opinion are usability and accessibility.
With the explosion in various platforms like Blogger and WordPress; which seems like decades ago, blogs became easy to get. You didnât have to pay for hosting or your register a domain name, these platforms took care of that for you.
Then if you decided that you wanted to turn the traffic into money, you could use Adsense and other advertisements. Accessibility also played their part in making blogs so successful. Sign up on Blogger, WordPress, LiveJournal or your platform of and choice and youâre good to go in a few minutes.
But recently, too many blogs have started to crop up in my opinion, mainly those aimed at making money online. Everybody seems to have a blog to call it an âOnline Businessâ.
My bone with the whole matter is that when anybody thinks of making money online, all that comes to their mind is a word called âBloggingâ.
But with abundance of blogs and news websites, to standout, you have to have a great idea. Playing it safe just doesnât work anymore. If you start a tech blog or frankly any blog, youâll have to compete with established giants and unless you offer standout content that compels users to flock to your site, it wont work.
In such a scenario, I wonder why our youth doesnât come up with online tools, solution oriented websites, ideas that have never been implemented before. Of course, innovation would be the key here.
Think of the most successful sites ever. The ones you have bookmarked and visit everyday. Facebook? Google? Flickr? They werenât more of the same in their time were they? Even if they were, they improved upon everything that existed at that time period. And thatâs is what got them where they are today.
This type of innovation is what is lacking right now. We donât see the next Google or Facebook on the horizon. Maybe we have the idea for it, but we mull it over and dismiss it as sour grapes. We never give it a try, or opt for easier ways, such as blogging.
We donât believe the next tech guru could be amongst us. But who knows. With the saturated state the Internet is in right now, it might be harder than it was ever before. But its still do-able.
After the rise of the social networks, everybody is looking at each other waiting for the next fad that sweeps over the world. Some even say that there wont be such an innovation.
But thatâs what people said at the very end of the 19th century that everything that could be invented has been invented. So I guess thereâs no harm in giving it a try. Innovate, experiment, create. Who knows, maybe the next Zuckerburg is amongst us.

fTalk Is The Best And Simplest Facebook Chat Client For Windows, Download Now
by GadgetGizmodo
Itâs no secret that Facebook has been making enhancements to its instant messaging capabilities. These are partially welcomed by the Facebook community, yet some still want to chat with their friends from a full-blown desktop application. You could use Windows Live Messenger, which supports Facebook Chat out of the box, but what if youâre really looking for a Facebook-specific application?
If you were looking for a great-looking and easy-to-use Facebook Chat client, fTalk might do the trick. It looks sleek, feels like a native Windows application and users who are familiar with Windows Live Messenger will feel right at home, since this client looks much the same â" in fact, even a little better.
When using this program for the first time, users are asked to log in. Thereâs no registration required for this, simply use your Facebook credentials and accept the Facebook permissions request, which should only be displayed if youâve never connected fTalk to your Facebook account before.
fTalk will then automatically pull your contacts list and work like a standard instant messaging client from here on out. Facebook friends will be sorted by whether theyâre online or not, and thereâs no distinction whether said friends are using a client or the standard Facebook Chat web interface. Sadly, thereâs no way to display these contacts by lists, much like they can be displayed by groups on standard instant messaging services, hopefully thatâs scheduled for a future release, but in return thereâs a fully-functional search field, with a Like button next to it, which simply allows users to âlikeâ the fTalk page on Facebook.
Getting in touch with a âfriendâ is as simple as double-clicking their name. A new chat window will pop up, allowing for text-only chats with some basic emoticons. Despite the attractive âPhotosâ and âProfileâ links at the top, they simply launch said friendâs Facebook profile or Photos page. I have no complaints about performance, it was smooth and sleek, certainly sleeker than Facebookâs web Chat interface.
You can also adjust basic settings (which are accessible by clicking on your display picture next to the search bar above the contact list and selecting âPreferencesâ), such as choosing whether to display notifications when friends log in or send you a message, as well as whether to automatically launch fTalk at login. The pop-up notifications are sleek and are displayed on the bottom-right side of the screen in an unobtrusive way.
This is Facebook Chat brought to the Windows desktop, there are no features added. Yet, if youâre looking to use Facebookâs service as your main instant messaging service, this might be a good way to get used to it.
Download fTalk from this link.
