Ready to ‘give back’ to the environment?

Only this morning at least one popular, mainstream Pakistani newspaper carried the news that the government was considering increasing “the annual energy import bill to a whopping $50 billion from $12 billion now, while energy sector companies asked the government on Tuesday to substantially raise domestic energy prices and sell natural gas and electricity to all consumers at a uniform rate by removing slab benefits being given to domestic consumers.” Meanwhile the Water and Power Minister, Syed Naveed Qamar felt that “two weekly holidays should be enforced” to allow saving approximately 300MW of electricity…

The question now arises whether this would be a truly feasible approach for all the organizations operating in Pakistan, both national and multinational. The move of declaring both Saturdays and Sundays public holidays had been made last year with allegedly great success since 300MW of electricity was saved. However, despite its effectiveness, it unfortunately, does not reasonable to miss the entire weekend simply because the country and its resources are unable to meet the energy and power demands that working Saturdays make on them. What then is to be the key to conserving energy and our resources?

The cons of ‘off Saturdays’

The first thing that all businessmen must realize is that conserving energy is almost synonymous with trying to preserve the environment and the Earth. This is because the energy that we wish to conserve is mostly obtained by burning fossil fuels, coal, oil or gas. Not only are these fossil fuels only available in finite amounts, but both their extraction and burning are very harmful for the atmosphere. The extraction of the power resources as they are called is a long, expensive process in itself, but later on, burning these fuels in power stations produce harmful greenhouse gases which heat up the Earth. As the Earth heats up, the atmospheric temperatures also rise making us feel “hot” or “cold,” and then air conditioning (or heating systems) are required to stabilize the temperature to something more suited to human beings’ needs. This simple explanation is enough to make one realize that preserving power resources and the Earth are closely interlinked.

Consequently, having a long weekend is not the solution that either organizations or governments should be looking for. No matter how much the employees may enjoy a long weekend, looking at the idea from a business perspective shows that Saturdays off would probably not be a very good idea. What then is the solution? Some alternative measures that all organizations should follow to reduce their energy consumption.

How to slash energy consumption?

According to Munib Khwaja, the CSM at APCC, “when a building is being planned, then a lot of things can be done at that time which will be beneficial to users later on. Like the building management, the lightning management, BMS (building management system) and light intensity can be changed to meet intensity requirements. In this case, more dependence is also placed on sunlight so that solar lightning may be used to lower electricity consumptions” so that eventually a green, intelligent building is built.

To illustrate his point, Munib Sahib also used his own organization as an example. Since they use a lot of computers, Munib Khwaja spoke of how they cool down all their instruments. “We’ve started using rack like structures,” he said, “and to lower the heat produced by these racks, we bring cooling racks near to them. This allows cool air to blow from the front of the rack, while hot air goes out from the back.” The hot air is also captured by the cooling unit in the same row, so that long panels or low paths to recover heat are not required. All in all, the procedure has helped “minimize the room load and energy consumption has been lowered by nearly 40%.”

Furthermore, organizations could begin by making a minor investment and getting all incandescent lights replaced with energy savers. These energy savers consume only half the amount of energy that incandescent bulbs do. Employees could be asked to use the sunlight as much as possible, switch off unnecessary lights, lower the speed at which air conditioners run and switch off monitors when not at their desks. Put together, the measures would have a far better chance of success at lowering the energy consumption at offices. Also, while it might even let organizations save enough energy throughout the week to warrant their opening at least half the day on Saturdays!

Israel Trying to Develop Relations with Pakistan Through Facebook

Israel Trying to Develop Relations with Pakistan Through Facebook

By Asad Ur Rehman · Friday, Apr 15, 2011 43 Comments

Social Media especially Facebook and Twitter are very much popular all around the globe. Every one is using them whether he/she is a student, businessman, housewives, religious scholars etc.

Name anyone from any class of life and you will find him a user of any of the above mentioned media.

The popularity is increasing by every passing day. We have already seen that businesses are advertising and winning customers through Facebook whereas recruiters are recruiting potential candidates through Facebook too. Some are making friends while others are searching for their life partners. All this and many more activities like games, information gathering are being carried out through these social networks.

Israel in Pakistan Facebook Page thumb Israel Trying to Develop Relations with Pakistan Through FacebookAll of the above mentioned activities may not look odd to anyone but what is interesting about the Facebook is that it may be the first time that social media is being used to develop relationships with other country.

As we all know that Pakistan has no diplomatic relations with Israel and infect Pakistan hasn’t recognized Israel till yet but in an attempt to foster relationships with Pakistani people, especially with youth, Israel has decided to use much popular social media Facebook.

They have created a page on Facebook by the name of Israel in Pakistan.

At first, by the title of Page, it looks as if Israeli embassy is working in Pakistan but when you go into “info” tab, only then situation gets little clearer.

The information mentioned on the page is as below:

Since Israel and Pakistan do not enjoy formal diplomatic relations, this online embassy serves to foster friendship between nationals of Israel and Pakistan on Facebook. Hopefully we can soon build real embassies in Pakistan and Israel, Shalom!

Mission

“The Embassy of Israel in Pakistan has created this Facebook page as a resource of information on Israel and provides updates on the Mission’s activities to the general public.”

For the time being they have also allowed user postings on the page and till date 2350 people have joined the page. The page is being advertised rigorously through Facebook adverts. Till now most of the postings on the page contain hatred and racism against Jews & Israel.

Let’s see how much they will be successful in their attempt to develop relations with Pakistan. But one thing that people should do that despite the hatred with Israel they should comment or post in a civilized manner as they are representing Pakistan.

Right now people are posting in an offensive, uncivilized manner which is bringing disrepute for them and country as well.

Moreover this matter should be taken at Pakistan Government level and government should devise a strategy in this regard too.

Safari In Mac OS X Lion Gets ‘Do-Not-Track’ Tool

Remember Mac OS X Lion? Well its currently in private developer seeding and Apple plans to release it later this year in Summer. Word from WSJ is that Apple is incorporating the ‘Do-Not-Track’ tool inside Safari for Mac OS X Lion. Details, after the jump.

What is the ‘Do-Not-Track’ tool?

Do-not-track tools in browsers automatically send out messages to websites and online-advertising networks requesting that users’ movements around the Web not be tracked. The system will only work if Web companies agree to respect peoples’ tracking preferences

With Safari also adding support for ‘Do-Not-Track’ tool, only Google Chrome is left without the tool, both Mozilla Firefox and Microsoft Internet Explorer offer this tool in their latest versions. However, it should be kept in mind that the major ad networks on the internet have yet to agree with this system, before the tool can be of any use.

We’d love to here your thoughts on this. Do you think that major ad networks would agree to this system? If not, what would be the grounds on which this system is going to be criticized upon? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Windows Phone 7′s IE9 Beats iPhone 4 And Nexus S (Android) In HTML5 Speed Test [Video]

More news out of Microsoft’s MIX11 developer conference in Las Vegas, with Microsoft showing off its new IE9 web browsing technology for Windows Phone 7.

RP

Microsoft today pitted its own mobile browser up against the iPhone 4′s Safari and Google’s Android browser running on a Nexus S, though there was no mention of which versions of their respective software the two challengers were running. All three were put through their paces by Microsoft’s own speed reading test website. The results, unsurprisingly, favored the boys from Redmond.

WinRumors managed to capture the fun and games in video, but the gist is this â€" IE9 smoked both Android and iOS. While Microsoft’s mobile browser (which is basically the desktop app, according to MS) managed to complete the test at an impressive 22 frames per second, Android could only must 11 FPS with iOS languishing in third with just 2 FPS.

While these results are impressive for Microsoft, it’s again worth pointing out there was no mention of the software being used on the two competitor handsets. While we’re not suggesting Microsoft’s tests aren’t accurate, it’s something that’s worth bearing in mind when watching the video. With Apple’s iOS 4.3.x bringing improved Java runtime performance amongst other tweaks, it would be interesting to see whether that was the version Microsoft used.

Regardless, 22 FPS is an impressive result and Microsoft should be commended for pushing its mobile web browsing team so hard. Interesting days for WP7 ahead!

$48 Rebel Micro Sim Card For iPhone 4, Permanent Unlock Without Jailbreak!

Just yesterday, we told you about a new unlock for iPhone 4, 3GS & 3G on any baseband running any iOS using CutYourSim’s permanent unlock solution. For those who thought the price was too high ($169), here is another one and this time its much cheaper. Rebel’s Micro Sim card for iPhone 4 costs merely $48 for the lite version and $65 for the pro variant. Once again, the solution works without needing any jailbreak. It also lets you update the SIM Software and will continue to work even if Apple redesigns the iPhone.

So what’s the deal between lite and pro versions? Here is your answer:

The pro version ships with a custom iPhone 4 SIM tray that keeps the electronics inside the handset while the lite option does not require a special SIM tray for your iPhone 4 and the components are located on the outside of the handset, which isn’t aesthetically pleasing. Both solutions unlock iPhone 4s with basebands 1.59.00, 02.10.04, 03:10.01 and 04.10.01 and support iOS 4, 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.1, 4.3 and 4.3.

So now the question is, would you still wait for a software unlocking solution from iPhone-Dev Team or are these new, permanent unlocks should do the trick for you? Please do share your thoughts in the comments section below!

The Tablet War: Apple Remains the king

The Tablet War: Apple Remains the king

    By Fawad · Thursday, Apr 14, 2011 6 Comments

The 21st century populace is referred to as the ‘screen’ generation. The empty feeling that is felt when not staring at a light behind a glass panel is reflective of the way devices have shaped and begun to govern our daily lives.

Think about it: you have the television to give you entertainment and news, the computer to connect you to the world and digitize your world, the mobile phone to communicate irrespective of location (almost), and the satellite navigation unit in your car so you don’t get lost.

We love having a screen to look at. Even books are now digitized so we can read them while looking at an E-Reader, instead of the dull and dreary paper pages. In fact, the next time you are at a café or restaurant, check out the crowd to see how many keep looking at their mobile phones after small intervals. It’s an addiction!

In the last couple of years, the competition in the mobile communication arena has heated past any predicted dimensions. Manufacturers continue to clamber to find the next big thing that will take the consumer market by storm. However, none have had the success and popularity enjoyed by Apple. From its innovation to digital music to the personal computer arena, the technology giant has sought to attract the masses with style and simplified usability.

Since its debut in April 2010, the iPad has remained the top choice for tablet users.

According to a recent Gartner research report, the device and its iOS operating system held a massive 83.9 percent share of the market. A key reason for this dominance is the lack of a viable competitor and the slow response by other manufacturers to a segment of the consumer market thought to be redundant or insignificant. After all, Microsoft did try its luck with Tablet PCs several years ago to receive a cold response from customers.

Gartner’s prediction for the coming 4 years puts Apple in the driving seat within the Tablet arena, as a direct competition would require something original from other manufacturers.

However, with Google’s Android platform enter the arena through various manufacturers the share held is likely to be eroded. Analysts have often slated Apple’s strong-handed control over its devices and applications to be a negative for consumers that want the freedom on equipment for which a lot of money has been shelled out. However, Apple has continued to play the secure environment and sanctity of usability as its primary reasoning for such rules.

In 2010, Android held a 14.2 percent share of the Tablet market, which is projected to steadily increase to 38.6 percent by 2015. The recent launch of Tablet-centered Android 3.0, codenamed Honeycomb, is expected to play a major role in framing the foundation for upcoming versions of Google-powered devices, with the increased functionality and openness of the operating environment likely to be the drawing factors.

Worldwide Sales of Media Tablets to End Users by OS (Thousands of Units)

tabled world wide thumb The Tablet War: Apple Remains the king

    Source: Gartner (April 2011)

Research In Motion (RIM), the company behind Blackberry, is hoping that its much-awaited Playbook will prove a strong contender in the tablet war, with the introduction of QNX OS to power the user interface that is popular among the Blackberry followers. According to Gartner, RIM would end up with 10% of the market by 2015, placing it third; behind Apple and Android.

A key factor that arises from Gartner’s report is the growth expected in the tablet market, with the company predicting an almost 17x increase in sales of devices. Add this to the already dominant smartphone market, and one hopes that the service providers can keep up with the consumption of mobile data that is likely to be experienced in the coming four years.

On the local front, tablets still remain an exclusive item. For one, the unavailability of a strong data network means running high-end devices on a dated service. Upping the Gs of service and lowering that of the price could provide a possible solution to incorporating technology in the hundreds of manual processes that hound the current economy.
