by GadgetGizmodo
Think paperless hospital in Pakistan and the Indus Hospital comes to mind. A pioneer in many areas, the hospital was one of the first in Pakistan to start E-Cardiology, Â focuses on monitoring and providing immediate help to any heart patient, electronically. The Cardiology team at The Indus Hospital, with the help of Health Information Management System, makes it possible for any image or video to be transferred from the hospital to the cardiologistâs cell phone within seconds. The staff is now able to transfer an ECG, X-ray image, lab report, coronary angiograms or echocardiograms to the consultantâs phone within no time. This practice has helped save lives reducing the time taken for an expert decision to a few minutes, even during the night. The project, accomplished by the Health Information Management System, Â calculates the cost incurred on every image transfer is less than Rs.6.
âIt has been successfully used for the past few months and is an accomplishment for The Indus Hospital for initiating emergency electronic cardiac service which facilitates decision making through rapid and effective communication. This has and would certainly make a major difference in providing emergency cardiac care to our patients,â commented Dr Sajid Dhakam, Director Cardiac Services at Indus Hospital.
âA major reason for cardiac mortality in Pakistan is due to delay in detection and treatment of patients with acute heart problems,â added Dr. Imran Iftikhar, Consultant Cardiologist at The Indus Hospital. âAn ECG was recently sent to me at night on my cellphone from the Emergency Room and  the relevant medication delivered to the patient within 20 minutes saved a heart attack from happening. We saved a lifeâ
Another remarkable project is the development of an Emergency Response System. An ERS is activated from any computer terminal in the hospital and within a few seconds, not only informs the emergency response team within the hospital but also the on-call cardiologists on their cellphones.
Currently Indus Hospital is in the process of recording individual patientâs heart sounds along with electronic medical record file, a one of its kind database under developed. Pakistanâs first paperless hospital continues to serve its patients and their communities, keeping Information Technology at the center of it all.
About The Indus Hospital
The Indus Hospital can be traced back to 2007, when a group of dedicated doctors and businessmen came forward and pledged their support to make a difference to the disadvantaged communities in Karachi. Their vision was to establish and maintain a free-of-cost hospital that provides high quality, premium health care to people who do not have the means to bear the high costs associated with quality medical treatment. Today, The Indus Hospital is the only one of its kind in Pakistan providing specialized medical care in an impressive, state-of-the-art health center to people in dire need of help, completely free of cost.
