‘Fotoshop by Adobe’: A Hilarious Parody Ad Featuring Photoshop [Video]

This is probably the most hilarious thing you will see today! Film maker Jesse Rosten was inspired to make this Photoshop/ beauty advert parody after watching an infomercial for a cosmetics line one sleepless night, and he did well!

The result is this awesome video that is simply hilarious. What's even more funny is the tagline used to describe this parody informercial, "This commercial isn't real, neither are society's standards of beauty".

The ad looks all the more hilarious because most of it is true. You know what they say, beauty is as good as the latest version of Photoshop.

Just One Quarter Later, Nokia Is The Largest Windows Phone Smartphone Vendor In The World

It has been just over twelve months since Finnish communications company, Nokia, joined forces with the might of Microsoft in an attempt to boost their falling worldwide mobile phone sales by manufacturing devices featuring the Windows Phone 7 operating system. The move represented a somewhat bumpy journey into the unknown for Nokia but was seen as an attempt to try and break the stranglehold that Android and iOS powered devices have over the industry.

The Symbian OS which previously ran on Nokia devices played a huge part in making sure that Nokia were once the world’s leading smartphone vendor, a title they are very unlikely to recapture anytime soon thanks to the likes of Apple and Samsung dominating smartphone sales. The Symbian OS was predicted to be phased out entirely by mid 2012 and replaced solely with Nokia smartphones running the Microsoft Windows Phone OS in an attempt to compete in the "war of the ecosystems" as Nokia boss Stephen Elop put it at that time.

nokia-lumia-800

That partnership was announced only twelve months ago, but with the company launching their range of Lumia devices being launched in 2011. Strategy Analytics are reporting that they (Nokia) have overtook HTC and a number of others to become the world’s largest vendor of smartphones powered by Windows Phone. The number of Windows Phone powered smartphones shipped globally reached the 2.7 million mark in Q4 of 2011 with Nokia accounting for thirty three percent of that with 0.9 million units shipped. The high percentage is largely due to the fact that the Lumia range of phones gained in traction and popularity around the world.

PR_GWP_240212

Tom Kang, who is a direct at Strategy Analytics gives his opinion on how Nokia have managed to achieve the status as the world’s largest vendor of Windows Phone smartphones and what it may mean for the likes of HTC who have lost market share:

Nokia’s Microsoft smartphone growth during the quarter was achieved partly by capturing market share from HTC. This is a challenging development for HTC because it is also losing ground to Samsung in the Android segment. HTC is now at risk of being caught in a pincer movement between two giants of Samsung in Android and Nokia in Microsoft, and HTC must move with urgency to address the problem.

The news and statistics are obviously a good sign for the struggling Finnish company. After enjoying many years as the golden boys of mobile telephone manufacturing, they have almost been left behind by the huge advances in the industry thanks largely to the likes of Google and Apple who have the most dominant operating systems out there in the market. Nokia still have a long road ahead of them, and with Microsoft’s smartphone shipments being tiny in comparison to rivals, it seems that the road will be anything but smooth, nevertheless it represents a move in the right direction for Nokia.

HTC Reveals Schedule for Ice Cream Sandwich Upgrades for its Android Phones

Android 4.0

It’s been a while since Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was announced by Google â€" May 2011, to be exact. Google also announced efforts to ensure that OEMs push out Android updates quicker and support them on older devices but so far, none of the OEMs have delivered on this promise.

Samsung had announced its plans for the upgrades but we’ve yet to see any device receive an update. The timelines they provided were very vague and mentioned releases starting in 1st quarter of 2012.

Now, HTC has stepped up and announced their timelines for Ice Cream Sandwich update releases. Similar to Samsung, some of the devices have very vague update timelines.

Soon. That’s what we can tell, specially if you bought it recently. Here are all the timelines they’ve provided:

  • HTC Sensation
  • HTC Sensation 4G
  • HTC Sensation XE
  • HTC Sensation XL
  • HTC Rezound
  • HTC Vivid
  • HTC Amaze 4G
  • HTC EVO 3D
  • HTC EVO Design 4G
  • HTC Incredible S
  • HTC Desire S
  • HTC Desire HD

More information on Ice Cream Sandwich releases will be available in the following weeks.

This is because each OEM has to make sure it works correctly with the set of customizations they provide whether its skin customization, software features or hardware features. HTC is famous for its Sense UI that it builds on top of Android. This UI not only provides a different look, it ships with many features that are not available by default in Android. While, in certain cases, people might find these as bloat, most people find them useful. Same is the case with other Android OEMs such as Samsung, Sony Ericsson and so on.

To make sure that you’re always using the latest version of Android, you can either buy a Google experience device such as Galaxy Nexus which ships with Android 4.0, or you can always try using Cyanogen Mod, which is a custom ROM and always manages to bring the latest Android version to phones before OEMs officially release it themselves. This comes at a cost of not having OEM specific customizations and skins, but some people are more than happy to have this tradeoff since it means having the default Android UI.

Mentor Nashtas 2012 Opens At the Webstudio

By Aqsa Tariq

“Smile is an ice breaker”, said Ali Raza Merchant, Executive Director, Synergy Group of Companies, as he kick-started the very first Mentor Nashta 2012 session at the WebStudio TV this Friday, 24th February 2012. With sleeves up, Ali Raza Merchant was all set to mentor a group of BBA-MIS students from IBA who had the company of a faculty member for an unconventional form of learning, which is perhaps most crucial in the early phase of university life.

Jami Moiz, Assistant Professor,Dept of Marketing, Centre for Entrepreneurial Development of IBA accompanied 6 senior year students from IBA for an hour long session where students discussed queries related to the horrors of job opportunities, interviews and market value of their degree.

Students participating at the session were Adiya Amjad Malik,Farah Amna, Jawad Tehsin, M.Zulfiqar Hadi, Obaid Usmani and Rabia Siddiqui. Picking up from the significance of the digital age, Ali Raza Merchant briefed at a length on how students today are underestimating the role of social media. After all, one could do wonders if social media is experimented with a bit before one steps into the corporate world.

Smudged concepts about the relevance of degrees, fields and job or entrepreneurial opportunities were also discussed. The mentor lay emphasis on finding one’s own interest, exploring different opportunities and taking the lead in decision making as he elaborated on the fact that once you make the right turn in the first few years and build a strong foundation for oneself, you’re good for life! The mentor presented the positive perspective and said that confidence and self-branding were essential as he discussed different angles of presenting oneself at an interview. Other handy tips that he focused on included:

  • Present your weaknesses as strengths.
  • Add humor â€" it’s always an ice breaker
  • Know the organization background before you walk in
  • Be honest
  • And most importantly overcome the fear of failure.

Quoting examples of the IT revolution (Apple, Microsoft etc.) the mentor highlighted the importance of exploring arenas of entrepreneurial opportunities. If one has the passion to lead, initiate or pursue a career in a field they’re committed to, one needs to be focused and have full belief in their idea in order to convince the market, the buyers and the investors. Start small but start somewhere!

The students felt that the session was very promising as the mentor guided them through the process in a comfortable, non-conventional classroom manner. Wrapping up the session, Ali Raza Merchant made a commitment to the students to have similar follow-up sessions in order to keep the platform growing.

Norton Safety Minder Monitors Your Child’s Smartphone Activity Such As Websites, Texts, Apps And More

The idea of heavily monitoring your children’s online activities is a controversial one. On one hand, it is important to protect your child in today’s world of cyber-bullying and online criminals who take advantage of children’s innocence, and on the other, you risk invading your children’s privacy (everyone needs a little privacy!).

I believe children under the age of 10 shouldn’t be allowed to sit on the internet alone. They should be placed under parental guidance and, in this phase, learn how to use internet responsibly. Once the training wheels come off, once they understand the dangers that lurk out there, only then should they be allowed to use it independently.

My internet and computer usage was never monitored at any stage, but my parents always used to come by every few days and guide me not to share personal information online, or talk to strangers, or visit “questionable” websites. I will be following this technique when it comes to my own children (which should arrive in a decade or so): inform children of online dangers, check up on them every once in a while and trust they will follow your guidance.*

Now, about that app I was supposed to review:

Parents out there who prefer handing their children expensive, powerful technology (smartphones) and then closely monitoring them can use the recently released Norton Safety Minder. Check it out after the jump.

From Android Market:

Now you can use Norton Online Family to keep an eye on what your kids do on their Androidâ„¢ smartphones, too. The new, FREE Nortonâ„¢ Safety Minder: Mobile Edition app for Android expands the power of Norton Online Family by letting you see all the websites your kids visit or attempt to visit using their smartphones. It even lets you block specific sites or types of sites.

Symantec â€" the folks behind the popular Norton series of security and utility software â€" have released Norton Safety Minder for Android. This app lets you add “children” to your watchlist so you can keep an eye on smartphone activity such as the websites they visit, the apps they install and the texts they send and receive.

Upon launching the app, you are asked to sign up for a Norton account. Once an account is set up, you give the app “administrator” privileges so your kids can’t force-close or uninstall it and then add “children” to monitor. You can then view your kids’ activity online at Norton Online Safety’s official website.

Norton Safety Minder is a free app that lets you monitor and control website usage only. If you wish to monitor texting activity, apps installation and more, you will have to pay for a premier subscription to Norton Online Family and download the corresponding app.

Shop & Compare: Apple iPad 3 Vs. Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1

(For PC World Pakistan)

While the iPad 3 has yet to be launched scheduled for release on the 7th of March 2012, the Apple device has been receiving an inordinate amount of hype for quite sometime now. Despite such publicity, the question remains as to whether the tablet will be able to provide significant advantages over previous iterations as well as its top competitors. Therefore, we decided to make one such comparison by stacking up the upcoming iPad 3 specs with that of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

Size, Display and Dimensions

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 has dimensions of 256.7 x 175.3 x 8.6 mm, with a weight of 560g. The high definition 10.1″ display with 1280 x 800 WXGA boasts a pixel density of 149 pixels per inch. On the other side, the 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS TFT tablet, iPad 3, may be bulkier than its predecessor, and like the Galaxy Tab is 8.6 mm thick. The Apple’s new device will be a high resolution tablet featuring a 2048x1536p QXGA display, twice the display of iPad 2.

Processing Power and Memory

Apple will surely be upgrading the processing power of the new iPad version. And therefore, Apple is quite likely make the leap to a quad-core processor in the iPad 3, quad-core A6 chip expected to run around 1GHz and 1GB RAM. Moreover, Apple will refrain from installing a microSD slot, opting instead  to ship their product in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB models.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 still sports a serviceable dual-core 1GHz Cortex A9 chip running on the nVidia Tegra 2 T20 chipset. The powerful processor is backed by a ULP GeForce GPU. It also has 1GB RAM and comes in 16, 32 and 64GB models. Similar to the iPad 3, the Galaxy Tab offers no support for removable memory in hopes of guiding consumers to its higher capacity models.

Software

The Apple iPad 3 will obviously run on the new iOS software, granting the users access to more than 400,000 apps on the App Store. However, like the earlier iOS devices, it will also require iTunes to manage the media files.

The Galaxy Tab 10.1 features the Android 3.1 Honeycomb Operating System, which offers exceptional speed and power for immense web browsing and multitasking. With open access to Android Market, over 200,000 apps are only a touch away.

Camera

The iPad 3 will come with an improved camera and will reportedly feature an 8MP rear camera with LED flash support. That is a big bump up from the 7MP camera on the Apple iPad 2 and matches the camera on the Apple iPhone 4S. However, the exact specifications will be noted when the company officially launches it on March 7. Unlike the iPad 3, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is equipped with a 3-megapixel camera for snapping pictures and capturing 720p video. It also features a 2-megapixel front-facing camera for Google Talk video chat.

Availability and Price

Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is easily and widely available in the local market within a price range of PKR 50,000 to PKR 60,000. Apple will be revealing its tablet price on March 7 where it will disclose the new iPad 3. So until now, the price is still unknown. It comes with no surprise that the iPad 3 is technically superior to the Galaxy Tab 10.1. However, just as dual-core processors represented a titanic leap from previous iterations, the iPad 3 will come at a time when tantalizing new technology will be introduced to mobile devices. This alone may place the iPad 3 at a significant advantage over its competitors as well as its forefathers.

PTA Likely to Delay 3G Auction

PTA Likely to Delay 3G Auction

By Aamir Attaa · Tuesday, Feb 21, 2012 12 Comments

PTA logo1 PTA Likely to Delay 3G AuctionIt appears that Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has delayed the auction of 3G licenses in Pakistan, by few weeks at least.

Formal announcement for change in schedule is yet to be made, however, an advertisement published in print media today (and available on PTA’s website) hints that auction will be delayed by couple of months.

Advertisement said that PTA is looking for a consultancy firm of international repute to offer services for the auction of 3G license. Interestingly the last date for submitting EOI (Expression of Interest) for consultancy services is March 26th, 2012, that’s just three days ahead of scheduled 3G auction date of March 29th, 2012.

PTA was under heavy criticism from opposition senators on modalities of 3G auction. A senate’s standing committee on Telecom and IT later asked PTA to make amendments in 3G policy by incorporating following:

  • Auction 3G licenses only, and remove the terms 4G/LTE and technology neutral from licensing draft
  • 4G/LTE will be licensed later for earning more money
  • Increase the base price from US $ 210mn to US $ 291
  • No defaulter will be able to participate in the bidding â€" PTCL in this case
  • 50% of the licensing amount will be paid in 30 days and rest will divided in 5 equal installments in local currency

Another possible change in 3G policy could be regarding the qualification of bidders having common directors at parent groups.

Our sources at PTA tell me that final date for auction is yet to be decided. They said that authority will now make sure that everything is all set to go ahead with auction before announcing the final date of 3G auction.

We could not get official word on this from PTA’s spokesperson.

Check below PTA’s advertisement requiring consultancy services:
