Jailbreaks.me Is The New URL For iPad 2 Jailbreak; Stay Away From JailbreakMe.com As It May Distribute Malware Under New Ownership

JailbreakMe.com, the online service of sorts which let users jailbreak their iOS devices with a swipe of the finger, has been transferred to an “untrusted” owner after being sold recently and, as such, is no longer safe for use. The developer community will instead host the jailbreaking tool on a new domain which we’ve discussed after the jump.

JailbreakMe-3

The news comes straight from eminent jailbreak developer and iPhone hacker MuscleNerd in the form of a series of tweets sent out from his Twitter account.

What basically has happened is that Conceited Apps, an iOS and OS X development studio, has sold the domain jailbreakme.com (they allowed comex to use it to host his jailbreaking tool). Jailbreaking enthusiasts will be quick to recognize the domain name, as it was where iPhone hacker comex hosted his popular jailbreaking tool JailbreakMe. The domain name has apparently been sold to an “absolutely unknown, untrusted, and unsafe” owner and, as of writing, there is no web-based jailbreaking solution available.

From Twitter:

It’s sad @ConceitedApps sold out jailbreakme.com for $$. Luckily we have jailbreaks.me and won’t ever sell out.

@aksansai @conceitedapps the new owner of jailbreakme.com is absolutely unknown, untrusted, and unsafe..in perfect place for iPhone malware

@ModMyiDevices yep, all the web-based JBs will be at jailbreaks.me now. And we won’t ever sell out like @ConceitedApps, guaranteed

There is no reason to be worried, though. MuscleNerd has categorically stated that comex’ JailbreakMe tool will be available soon on a new domain jailbreaks.me and, as such, folks who wish to jailbreak their iOS device on iOS 4.3.3 will be able to use it the way they used it on jailbreakme.com. MuscleNerd has stated that jailbreaks.me will never be sold out.

As a warning, users are strongly suggested to STAY AWAY from JailbreakMe.com as its new owner may use it to spread iOS malware.

Comex’s most recent jailbreaking tool â€" JailbreakMe 3.0 - was released in early July. It used a PDF exploit in Mobile Safari to gain privileged access to iOS devices. Because the exploit was on a software level, it meant all iOS devices running iOS 4.3.3 were jailbreak-able using this tool. It was and, to date, is the only way to jailbreak the iPad 2 on iOS 4.3.3.

Last time we checked, over 2 million devices had been jailbroken using JailbreakMe (the number should be much, much greater now). The PDF exploit was later patched by Apple in a security update (iOS 4.3.4). The talented 19 year old developer behind the tool was also hired by Apple.
