Official Star Trek iPad App Turns iPad Into PADD [VIDEO]

If you’re reading this particular selection of words, the chances are you’d label yourself as at least a slight geek. In turn, if you’re a geek reading these words then the chances are you’re a fan of Star Trek, at least in passing.

Star Trek

Assuming you are indeed a fan of all things Star Trek, then you’re in for a lycra-clad treat, with this official Star Trek PADD iPad app.

Featuring a database of more Star Trek: The Next Generation facts and information than even a well oiled android would care to know, the app also provides users with the perfect screensaver â€" two self diagnostic screens and a schematic of the Enterprise D.

Where the fun really kicks in though, is the detailed episode guide and, wait for it, a full LCARS interface.

For those not fully initiated, LCARS, or Library Computer Access and Retrieval System is the interface we’ve all been watching on Star Trek:TNG when we weren’t trying to work out how they ever got people inside those skin-tight uniforms. Perhaps we should all tweet @wilw to find out?

Along with the visual niceties of LCARS, full audio and original computer voice are also present and correct, just for that added realism.

Now, if you’re a Trekkie, as most of us are, then the idea of LCARS on an iPad is enough to get your mind racing. After all, Star Trek was the show that predicted the iPad 20 years ago, with its PADD.

PADD, or Personal Access Display Device was the iPad-like device many characters were often seen walking around, tapping away on â€" just like we do today on our beloved iPads (and other tablets, for that matter).

In the Star Trek franchise the LCARS interface is often seen used on a PADD, which is an acronym for Personal Access Display Device, a hand-held computer device.

PADDs are used in the Star Trek universe by such space-faring organizations as Starfleet, the Andorian Imperial Guard, Bajoran Militia, Cardassian Union, Klingon Empire, Romulan Star Empire and Vulcan High Command. They are common to cultures even as distant as the Delta Quadrant.

We think it’s safe to say that the thought of having our very own PADD is more exciting than the actual episode information and Star Trek facts nestled behind the LCARS interface, but hey, we’re easily impressed. Check out the video down below to get you acquainted with the app before you go ahead with the purchase:
