iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 8 Megapixel Camera Module To Be Supplied By Largan Precision?

The camera module on iPhone 4S / iPhone 5 may be supplied by Largan Precision. The camera module, which has been rumored to be of 8 megapixel, holds a strong possibility of being given to Apple by Largan Precision.

Among the slew of other rumors concerning the next generation iPhone, we know that it is going to come bearing minor design improvements, larger screen and an A5 dual-core processor.

This rumor however, comes from Digitimes which has a rather uncertain track record when it comes to making predictions about Apple’s devices. The publication says:

Taiwan-based Largan Precision currently sees 8-megapixel phone-use lens modules account for nearly 10% of its total lens module shipment volume, but it may see 8-megapixel modules replace 5-megapixel ones to become the mainstream for smartphones in the third quarter of 2011 due to possible orders from Apple, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

The interesting thing to note here is that Largan Precision already supplies the 5 megapixel iPhone 4 camera module and iPad 2 lens to Apple. According to our analysis, it seems logical for Apple to continue with a supplier that has met the quality and functionality criterion the company has laid out for its devices.

Whereas some reports have gone as far as to hint at a 12.6 megapixel camera for iPhone 5, it remains to be seen what the next iPhone is actually going to bring with it.

Nevertheless, we’ll bring you all the updates on the next generation iPhone, as soon as they come in.

SECP’s eServices Project Wins Laureate Gold Medal 2011 in the Computer World Honors Program 2011!

On April 21, 2011, IDG’s Computerworld Honors Program announced Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan as winner of Laureate Gold Medal for its eServices Project. This annual award program honors visionary applications of information technology promoting positive social, economic and educational change. It was especially competitive this year because the program received more than 1,000 nominations from 23 different countries. All were reviewed for their benefit to society and the results of the technology applied by the Chairmen’s Committee, a coalition of chairmen and CEOs from leading technology companies, that has driven the Computerworld Honors Program since its founding in 1988 through its financial support and nomination of Laureate candidates.

CIO SECP, Arshad Javed Minhas says, “I feel this is a great moment to cherish for all of us at this glorious international recognition for our beloved country. This award is also a significant indicator of SECP’s commitment to provide healthy environment to the investors for the growth of Pakistani economy by implementing efficient automated systems to assure the transparency and accountability.” He explained that the eServices system is a continuation of the SECP’s efforts to make use of advanced technologies to ensure that the Commission effectively performs its regulatory, monitors and enforces duties. “The IS&T Division,” Minhas continues, “had fulfilled a number of strategic initiatives, which would be treated as the infrastructure for many projects for the Commission including eServices, eSurveillance, ISO 27001 certification and establishment of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery System. eServices system of the Commission is accessible from anywhere in the world via definite login ID with digital signature. There are numerous benefits of this eServices system for the business and cooperate sector of Pakistan as it provides the investor transparent, efficient and cutting-edge environment.

Enable Native Multitasking For Cydia In iOS 4.x [How To Tutorial]

Cydia, despite being the de facto standard tool for installing non-Apple-approved applications on jailbroken iDevices, it has a major drawback: it won’t run in the background. That means you can’t keep using the phone while you’re installing an app, which can be quite tedious, especially when you’re on the road, and most likely in a hurry. Here’s how you can modify your iPhone to your wildest dreams and still check your email while you do it.

Cydia

This tweak, as well as Cydia itself, requires you to jailbreak your phone first, since, just like any OS modifications, it’s not approved by Apple. It’s recommended that you have basic skills on how to restore your device, in case something goes wrong. You can follow our step by step guide to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.1 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (untethered |tethered) on Mac, or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.2 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (tethered), or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze.

Multitasking

In order to perform this, you’ll need to modify Cydia, which will involve accessing your phone’s file system. In order to do that, you must attach the device to your computer and use file browser, such as iPhone Explorer, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, make the changes directly from your iOS device using an app like iFile. Once you’re ready, please do the following:

1. Navigate into /var/stash/Applications/Cydia.app and open Info.plist.

Cydia (3)

2. Near the end of the fie, you’ll find the following line:

Cydia (4)

<key> UIApplicationExitsOnSuspend </ key>

<true/>

You must set the value, or the last bit of text, to “false”, like so:

<key> UIApplicationExitsOnSuspend </ key>

<false/>

3. Whether you’re modifying the file from your desktop or your device, make sure you’ve saved your changes and reboot. If everything goes as expected, Cydia should now be able to run on the background, even if you hit your home button.

Such a perk doesn’t come without its kinks. Cydia doesn’t allow this feature by default for a good reason: aside from eating up its far amount of RAM and processing power, which will slow down all your tasks, some modifications might fail when other processes are running and may even force an unpleasant restore. If you have an older iOS device, you might have a hard time getting anything done while performing installations, due to even slower hardware.

Apple Mac OSX Update coming to help with Mac Defender Malware

Apple has just put out a How-To about Mac Defender Malware that has been spreading like wildfire through the Mac OSX community. They have suggested in their article that they will be releasing an update in the coming days to help with the Malware. This is quoted from their article:

In the coming days, Apple will deliver a Mac OS X software update that will automatically find and remove Mac Defender malware and its known variants.  The update will also help protect users by providing an explicit warning if they download this malware.

Apple has also been very gracious in providing steps on how to avoid the Malware and to remove it if you were so unlucky to get it. We have been reporting that Apple had been refusing to help users, even submitting a letter to all tech support personnel to not assist customers with this Malware. I wonder what changed their minds?

If you are a Mac user, look out for a 10.6.8 update coming your way in the next couple of days.

2011 New Macbook Air Release Slated For The Summer

Apple may release a new line of Macbook Air as early as this summer. The new Macbook Air models will have the next generation Intel Sandy Bridge processors and the super-fast Thunderbolt I/O port, it has been learnt.

The current Macbook Air lineup was announced just seven months ago, in October 2010. The Macbook Air was said to be the thinnest notebook on the planet, the title of which was later clinched by the Samsung Series 9 ultra-slim notebook.

Reports indicate that Apple’s part suppliers will start shipping parts for the new 2011 Macbook Air models by the end of May and a we shall see new Macbook Air release as early as June or July, 2011.

Why a Sandy Bridge Macbook Air? Well Apple has already released new 2011 Macbook Pro models and 2011 iMacs with Sandy Bridge next generation Core processors and the new Thunderbolt I/O connectivity port. So its only logical for Apple to update its Macbook Air offering to the latest and greatest hardware.

If you’re looking to buy a Macbook Air, our advice will be hold off for now. We’d also suggest not to buy a Mac Mini at this time, as those are also likely to get updated to Sandy Bridge processors sometime later this year.

140plus Tweak For Twitter for iPhone Lets you Send Tweets Over 140 Characters Long [Jailbreak Tweak]

140plus is a tweak for Twitter for iPhone which allows you to get around the annoying 140-character Twitter limit. Instead, you’ll be given the option to either shrink the tweet down to 140 characters or send it anyway. So how can you send a larger tweet? Read on.

      twitter-for-iphone-appstore-badge

Sadly, there’s no way to post long tweets directly on the service, since they’re simply not supported and don’t work with the service. This mod gets around that similarly to other services such as Twitlonger or Deck.ly, available on other clients, removing all excess characters and inserting a link to the full tweet instead. Unlike Twitlonger, tweets will be stored on Pastie.org service, which wasn’t specifically developed to to host tweets, but is able to do that job just fine.

      140plusfortwitter1

This tweak requires you jailbreak your phone first, since this method isn’t approved by either Apple or Twitter. It’s recommended that you have basic skills on how to restore your device, in case something goes wrong. You can follow our step by step guide to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on iOS 4.3.1 with Redsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (untethered | tethered) on Mac, or with Sn0wbreezeon Windows, or on iOS 4.3.2 withRedsn0w, PwnageTool 4.3 (tethered), or with Sn0wbreeze on Windows, or on iOS 4.3.3 using Redsn0w, PwnageTool and Sn0wbreeze. If one of those methods hasn’t worked for you, be sure to poke around. One will almost definitely work on your phone. If you’re not willing to jailbreak your phone or modify Twitter, you can always get another client that supports long tweets, such as TweetDeck for iPhone.

This mod was created by Moe Seth, who authored many other iPhone tweaks, such as Photector, which allows you to password-protect your pictures, in order to prevent them from being deleted, or just remove the option to delete them altogether; and TwitPlaying, which lets you tweet out the song currently playing on your device. Like many popular mods, 140plus is available on BigBoss, which is among the most popular Cydia repositories. The installation process is simple and no restart is required. You’ll simply have to re-launch Twitter for iPhone app to see the changes.

Be wary of updates to Twitter for iPhone, since they can and will most likely break this mod, or at least require users to re-apply it.

New Apple Store 2.0 is live and real!

Well, it turns out our reports of the new Apple Store layouts is true. Thanks to our Australian friends, who are about a day ahead of us, we get an early sneak peak of the new store design and layout. The stores now use iPads to display product information and ask for help with products. You can press the “ask a specialist” button, and an Apple specialist will come over to you and give you assistance. The iPads are also locked down and surrounded by a plastic case. The home button does not appear to work, and the new Apple Store application has been loaded on them as well.

There was also no party, nor was there any type of celebration. There were no Apple Executives there to congratulate anyone. There was no 10 year anniversary banners or anything mentioning that they have been open for 10 years. Still is worth going down to your local Apple Store and checking out the new displays.

Apples mandatory weekend meeting for it’s store employees is said to be new store launch!

We reported yesterday that Apple was getting ready to overhaul their retail stores this weekend, and we are getting word of something even bigger.

The stores will reportedly be getting new iPads to use for employees terminals, including a new RetailMe application for in-store use. Another rumor is that the iPads will replace the paper signs next to product to allow for an interactive sign for the product they are displaying. In any case, AppleInsider was able to get a photo of an Apple Store that recieved several iPads for store use.

Apple has been giving their employees several training modules on iPads to help with this rollout as well. The new stores will feature a unique “start up” area to help new customers setup their devices and assist them with the setup of their new computer.

There will obviously be new signage since most stores still have old signs in the front as well as a new store layout. Much is still left to speculation, so if you want to find out for yourself, get there early on Sunday and check out the new store.

Intel pledges to rejuvenate the PC

PCs will become like consumer electronics devices in the next two years, Intel’s CEO said
      By James Niccolai
IDG News Service (San Francisco Bureau)

SAN FRANCISCO (05/17/2011) â€" While much of the innovation these days seems to be happening in smartphones and tablets, Intel says big improvements lie ahead for the trusty PC.

In the next two years, mainstream laptops will get thinner and lighter, run all day on a single battery charge, have touchscreens, get instant-on capabilities and run multiple OSes, all without compromising performance, CEO Paul Otellini said at the company’s financial analyst day on Tuesday.

“This is not just about evolving the PC. This is about reinventing the PC into a much more consumer electronics-like device,” Otellini said.

Some of the developments are probably being driven by tablets and smartphones â€" particularly Apple’s iPhone and iPad â€" as people become accustomed to computers that start instantly at the press of a button.

While Intel hurries to develop chips that are better suited to smaller devices, it still maintains that PCs will play a central role. “People want to create, and we still look at tablet PCs more as sort of consuming devices,” said Dadi Perlmutter, joint head of the Intel Architecture Group.

Intel didn’t talk about any specific PCs in the pipeline, but Otellini said the changes will come with “Windows 8, Windows 9 and beyond.”

Intel also showed off some new technologies for PCs that it is developing in its labs. It didn’t say when any of them would be ready for market.

One, called Fast Flash Standby, aims to make the “hibernate” power-saving mode on laptops less cumbersome to use. Many people don’t use hibernate because it takes minutes for a PC to come back to life, while a PC in standby mode starts up in seconds, said an Intel engineer who showed the technologies on stage.

Yet hibernate mode saves much more energy. A laptop battery lasts only a few days in standby mode, but in hibernate mode it can run for almost a month, the engineer said.

So Intel developed a new technology called Fast Flash Standby. It takes a snapshot of the state of the laptop in flash memory just before the PC goes into hibernation and can then bring it back to life in seconds.

The engineer showed the technology on a laptop playing a high-definition video. When she put the machine in hibernation and then started it up again, the video resumed playing almost immediately. She even removed the battery and replaced it, and the machine started up where it left off.

“If I did this in any other state, I’d be rebooting my system,” she said.

Another technology aims to help people with multiple computers to keep their files and folders synchronized among the various devices. Instead of using a USB drive or sending files between PCs via e-mail, users can drag and drop files on the screen to transfer them from one PC to another over a Wi-Fi network.

The engineer contended it’s better than cloud-based services for sharing content because the data remains within a user’s own Wi-Fi network, which she argued is more secure.

A third technology downloads e-mails, Twitter messages and other content automatically while the machine is unattended. A person catching an early flight, for example, can set the PC to wake up in the night and download the latest information, so the user can run for the plane in the morning and have all their e-mail and other content already on the machine.

One final technology, which Intel said was “fresh out of the labs,” didn’t work too well in the demonstration. It was supposed to allow a PC to act as a server and share images, videos and other files with other computers, even when they were running different operating systems.

An engineer took a photo with an Android phone and made it appear instantly on the screen of a nearby Windows PC. But when he tried the same thing several times with an iPhone, it didn’t work.

“The demo gods aren’t smiling on us today,” he said.

Turn your Home PC into a Web/Streaming Server

Turn your Home PC into a Web/Streaming Server

By Rameez Kakakhel · Friday, May 20, 2011 0 Comments

So you are online and your family member, who are maybe in New York or maybe elsewhere are asking for pictures of a recent family event. You check the size of the pictures and its XYZ GB’s (if some can’t judge that’s a lot & it’s OK if you didn’t judge).

Uploading somewhere would take centuries and also you don’t want them to be uploaded to a third party server (Google WebAlbums, PhotoBucket, ShutterFly, JAlbum etc). Emailing them through Picasa would reduce quality and again take time. So how do you share them?

How about hosting a server on your own PC and than giving just the URL (web address) to your family and friends abroad? This solution is simpler and easier than you might think and the answer is, Opera Unite.

Opera Unite is a feature of the Opera Browser that turns your system into a server. A review of the general features of Opera Browser are here, now let’s explore Opera Unite.

      How to Use Opera Unite:

Click the Menu button in Opera Browser, move the cursor to Opera Unite and select enable.

Create your account or login if you have one already, click Next, name your PC and click finish.

You are almost done here. URL of your home PC will be like: [YourPCName].[AccountName].operaunite.com.

Opera Unite is configured in just 3 steps, now let’s get to work.

Go to http://unite.opera.com/applications/ or alternatively Go to Menu>Opera Unite> Manage Applications & click the Add button. Whatever you want to do â€" just install the required application, from webserver to streaming your webcam to music player or notes.

Everything is available. Here are a few examples & an answer to the scenario we discussed in the first paragraph. Install the Photo Sharing application.

Select the folder that you want to share and click OK. You are done. On the next page you will get a sharing URL and a password to access these files remotely, share them with anyone that you want. You can remove the password restriction by the way. So no matter how large your photo collection is, it’s available to the public in just 3 steps.

How about streaming (sharing) your music collection with your friends or the world without uploading them anywhere? Install the Music Player application, Select the folder you want to stream & click OK.

Give the address of your music player to all those with whom you want to share it. On my 1Mbps Wateen connection music streamed perfectly without any glitches to one client, multiple clients may reduce this efficiency though.

Now we have a Photo Gallery and Music streaming service running directly from our PC, without writing a single line of code or moving/uploading files to third party servers.

Remember, these files are directly shared from your computer with the people you want so if your PC is off or has no internet connectivity, no one will be able to access them.

There are lots of apps that you can try, good luck exploring J. By the way I have the following services running from my PC.

You can enable disable Opera Unite or other applications from the panel or the Opera Unite menu.

Google I/O Announcements – Google Music Beta, Android 3.4 Ice Cream Sandwich And Movie Rentals

Google today announced a raft of new products and features at its I/O event in San Francisco, a couple of which stand out above the rest. Here we offer a short rundown of what we think are the most interesting things to come out of Google today.

      Ice Cream Sandwich

Ever since Honeycomb 3.0 came out for Android tablets the world has been asking when the platform’s smartphones would join in the bee-filled fun, and today we got our answer. Technically they won’t.

What they will get is a new unified version of Android, names Ice Cream Sandwich â€" following the now familiar naming convention of a desert beginning with the next letter of the alphabet.

This new version of Android will sport new multitasking capabilities (Google promises no more memory management issues), resizable widgets and a new user interface. Another new feature is support for USB devices such as Xbox 360 game controllers, though this is presumably added with tablets in mind more than phones.

      Google Music Beta

Rumors of a Google competitor for Apple’s iTunes have been merrily rumbling along for over a year now, and the search giant finally took the wraps off it’s Music Beta service today.

Live now for users in the United States only, Music Beta begins with a Windows and Mac application that uploads your library to Google’s servers.  Once uploaded the tracks are available for playback from any Android device running 2.2 or above, be it a tablet or smartphone. Presumably Google TV will also get in on the act, though that doesn’t seem to have been confirmed as yet. All the usual cloud-y features are here â€" synced playlists, offline caching and the like.

The current beta allows for 20,000 songs to be uploaded for free.

      Movie Rentals

In another clear swipe at Apple, Google also announced movie rentals.

Priced between $1.99 and $3.99, rentals can made on both tablets and smartphones, thought the latter will be available in a couple of weeks.

Rentals include HD video and last for 24 hours once playback has begun, just as iTunes rentals do.

Again, this service appears to be US-only at the moment, presumably while Google sorts out some sort of licensing agreement.

These are just a few of the major announcements to come out of I/O, and we’re sure you’ll agree these are exciting times for Android fans. With tablet and smartphone finally getting a unified operating system maybe tablets will begin to see the boom in apps their smartphone siblings did last year.
