Windows Phone 8 SDK Now Available To Download

The software development kit for Windows Phone 8 has been a fairly closely-guarded secret up until this point, but in an announcement at BUILD 2012, Steve Ballmer has confirmed it is now ready to download.

The fledgling platform has quite a few challenges ahead if it is to compete with the two juggernauts of iOS and Android, and as well as lagging behind in terms of general consumer reach, the number of apps available for the Redmond company’s new ecosystem will also have to be dramatically improved.

windows-phone-8-logo

WP8 (3)

The 120,000 apps currently available at the Windows Phone Store may seem significant on paper, but unfortunately, it’s dwarfed by the Apple’s App Store and the Google Play, which boast a cumulative sum total of around 1.4 million. Quality is the order of the day when it comes to apps, but there still has to be a wide selection available to users, and although it’s certainly going to take a while for Windows Phone 8 devices to gather momentum, the alternative interface and array of promising devices won’t do it any harm whatsoever.

iOS is currently the platform of choice from the point of view of developers, but with Windows Phone 8 presenting something of a fresh slate, I wouldn’t be surprised to see many a dev attempt to make a name for themselves on the Microsoft platform. Unlike Apple and Google’s mobile OSes, Windows Phone 8 doesn’t stick with basic icons and widgets, and having seen developers create some real marvels already on Windows Phone 7.x, I’m quietly excited about what’ll be on offer for its successor.

WP8 SDK

If you wish to download the Windows Phone 8 SDK, then please check out this link for further details. You will of course need to be running Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro, and your 64-bit setup will need 4GB of free hard disk space and 4GB RAM installed. Furthermore, if you wish to take advantage of the Windows Phone 8 Emulator, you will need to be running Windows 8 Pro edition or greater. If you meet all the criterion, go ahead and download the new Emulator.

BUILD is still currently ongoing, and should we learn anything more with regards to Microsoft’s new releases, we’ll be sure to let you guys know.

Letterpress: A Free Addictive Word Puzzle Game for iOS

After the huge success of Tweetie, a Twitter Client for iOS (which was later purchased by Twitter), its developer, Loren Brichter has come up with a new addictive word puzzler game for iOS called Letterpress.

Letterpress-icon

Letterpress is basically a two player game which can be played against random opponents or friends in iOS’ Game Center. The goal of the game is to create words. At start of the game, you and your opponent will be assigned a color with which you will need to cover the board.

mzl.tgabyxcf.320x480-75 mzl.hgxpechd.320x480-75

Players take turns to make words from a 5 x 5 board of lettered tiles with each letter being worth one point. The letter turns to your color once you use it in a word. So the longer the word you make, the more number of tiles turn to your color. At the end, the winner is the player who controls most of the board with his assigned color.

Letterpress is available for download in App Store for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch for free. Grab your copy now!

Nokia Global Launch in Pakistan: First Time Ever!

We are invited to a number of launch events and we have almost attended all of them, and being in Pakistan we have always been part of launch events for devices that are about to be launched in Pakistan.

Thanks to Nokia Pakistan, for the first time ever, a new Nokia phone announcement was made from Pakistan at a global launch event held at Marriott Hotel, Karachi last week.

This was a media event held just for the traditional media, newspapers/magazines and online media (this is where we come in!). Sizzled Core, along with a bunch of other bloggers around Pakistan were invited to be a part of this grand event.

Nokia’s decision to choose Pakistan for the global launch of their upcoming devices was a clear sign of how important Pakistani market is for Nokia. Nokia envisions to connect the next billion people with the newly launched Nokia 110 and Nokia 112. Great presentations, and overview of how strong the telecommunications industry is in Pakistan, dance, music, fireworks… This was all part of the Nokia event.

Nokia has the biggest app store in Pakistan which includes 2,000,000+ weekly downloads on average! Almost all of media fro mPakistan is accessible on the Nokia Store â€" apps include: Geo, Aaj TV, Dawn News, Express Tribune, ARY News, Radio Pakistan etc.

Some really cool local applications are also available, such as Cricket, Ludo, Toffee TV etc. Islamic apps on the App store have millions of downloads. There are over 400 local apps, with 200+ Pakistan developers contributing to the Nokia App store which bring the download count of the Pakistani content to over 17 million!

These statistics and figures were shared by the three key speakers of the main event â€" Imran Khalid Mahmood, Saulo Passos and Calin Turcanu. The event had global and regional spokesperson from Nokia to share their thoughts on emerging markets and the new devices. Let’s take a brief intro to each of these speakers.

    Imran Khalid Mahmood

Imran Khalid Mahmood is the VP, Near East, Nokia Corporation. In his line of duty he is responsible for heading the sales strategy for Nokia in this region. He is the frontrunner of all measurable KPIs and maintains a strict vigilance over them which are the main reason for Nokia’s success and popularity in this region.

    Saulo Passos

Saulo Passos is the Global Director Mobile Phone Communications at Nokia, based in London, England. As part of the global Mobile Phones leadership team, his main focus targets the Next Billion strategy, a Nokia effort to connect more people to the internet, using a mobile device as the leading path.

    Calin Turcanu

Prices of these new Nokia phones were one of them ain concerns by the attendees there. Nokia 110 is priced at Rs. 3800 and Nokia 112 will be available for Rs. 4000. Very affordable, isn’t it?

Nokia is continuously working on making the value rich features affordable to all price points â€" Nokia 110 and Nokia 112 are great examples of how even the entry-level Nokia devices don’t just offer optimized and affordable internet but at the same time flaunt a stylish design that will cater to a variety of lifestyles.

Security Threats for Field Engineers in Karachi

Security Threats for Field Engineers in Karachi

By Unknown Writer · Wednesday, Oct 31, 2012 0 Comments

1009540 paki karachi map150 Security Threats for Field Engineers in KarachiThe Base Support Subsystem (BSS) is an integral part of the overall GSM network. It involves BSS planning and BSS deployment. As the name suggests, BSS deployment has to do with spending time on the field and installing telecom sites and rectifying problems that may arise during operations.

For this, usually male engineers are hired as the field work is often too hectic and may require engineers to be on the field round the clock. Both telecom operators (like Mobilink, Telenor, Zong, Ufone and Warid) and vendors (like Ericsson, Huawei, ZTE, Nokia Siemens and Alcatel-Lucent) outsource such tasks to sub-contractual companies â€" about whom we have already written in “Woes with Telecom Sub-Contractors”.

Working on field exposes an engineer to numerous threats, highlighted by the fact that once an engineer is approaching to a telecom site, predators know he will most likely be carrying expensive equipment.

Till 2008, most news that surfaced about kidnapping telecom engineers from field locations were vastly restricted to areas known for civil insecurity. But since long, the wave has engulfed almost every town in the country, Karachi being the most notorious for this.

To make things worse â€" and as reported in a recent event in Karachi with a drive test engineer working for a telecom vendor â€" attackers (exhibiting their affiliation with a political party) kidnaped engineers with the accompanying staff for ransom.

In one event on getting the ransom amount, instead of releasing, the kidnappers then contacted the company and demanded a handsome amount for the stable running of the telecom site, else company was threated that equipment will be destroyed and tower may get physically damaged.

In another incident, when the Field Operations team of a telecom operator visited a telecom site for refueling in premise of Baldia Town Karachi, they were kept hostage till fuel worth PKR 0.1 million was given. It has also been reported that units of various political parties demand extortion money, otherwise threatening to damage the telecom site in their area.

An indicator of how much sites are stable and operating normally in an area, called “TCH Availability”, is low for almost all telecom operators in disturbed areas of the city as the sites run out of fuel and eventually close down making it a big concern to provide coverage and quality service to customers in that area.

Such events and concerns have been the table-talk topics in team meetings but our tendency to accept routines, adjust to atrocities incline us to carry on the same way. PTA and telecom companies are as apparently helpless as the law enforcement agencies of the country.

Much should be done to preserve lives of engineers and technicians at the expense of network quality.

If it’s the government that should be held responsible for opening a new front of challenges for telecom operators and engineers? Whoever be the responsible, the situation will get only worse if not addressed soon.

Lightning To VGA And Digital AV Cables Now Available From Apple Online Store

Another Apple media event has been and gone, this time bringing multiple product announcements as well as the obligatory update on how existing devices like the iPhone, Mac and iPad are faring in the marketplace. Although, most of the attention will rightly be paid to the new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display and the release of not one, but two new iPads, we mustn’t forget that a number of important accessories were also mentioned during the keynote, albeit extremely fleetingly.

The Apple.com website has been updated to reflect the availability of these accessories, with the Lightning Digital AV Adapter available for $49 with a current shipping period of 2-3 weeks. iOS device owners will be able to use the Lightning Digital AV Adapter to send the currently viewed content from a Lightning compatible device to a HDMI equipped hardware such as a television set or a HDMI ready projector. Support is bundled in for up to 720p HD with video mirroring also possible.

    MD826

The video out support for the accessory is 1080p compatible, and supports Apple’s latest devices like the new iPad mini, the fourth-generation iPad as well as the iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch. In addition to the Lightning Digital AV Adapter, Apple is also making available a Lightning to VGA Adapter that commands the same $49 price and will ship within 2-3 weeks.

Once again, the Lightning to VGA Adapter will allow iOS devices owners to mirror out their devices display to a VGA equipped television set, notebook or projector. Both cables follow the exact same form factor that we have seen with previous Apple cables and have been priced in the same ballpark that we have seen Apple historically hit with accessories of this type.

    MD825

All of the available and upcoming Lightning based cables will only be compatible with the latest wave of iOS devices. Previous iterations of the hardware still carry the original 30-pin connection hardware and therefore cannot be used with these new accessories. Currently supported devices include the fifth-generation iPod touch, the iPhone 5, the fourth-generation iPad and the fabulous new iPad mini.

These latest two cable accessories to land on Apple’s official website are just a number of a growing range of Lightning cables offered by the company for new iOS devices. Lightning to USB cables have been available since the iPhone 5’s launch as well as a new Lightning to SD Card reader offering also about to become available as a product of this latest media event.

Poll: How Do You Rate TV Shows on Telecom Topics?

Poll: How Do You Rate TV Shows on Telecom Topics?

By Aamir Attaa · Wednesday, Oct 24, 2012 0 Comments

pak media Poll: How Do You Rate TV Shows on Telecom Topics?Electronic media, that specializes in sensational reporting on political issues, rarely touch topics related to Telecom and IT industry. It’s a dilemma, however, that’s how it is.

However, whenever these mighty TV anchors or news reporters try to cover a topic related to telecom or IT industry, they often end up embarrassing themselves (that’s what I think, you can differ with me here).

This is probably because of the fact that these TV anchors and news reporters try to sensationalize everything that comes across them. They try to pick the negativism, corruption and all sorts of bad things that they come across in other various sectors (mainly the politics).

During this they forget the fact that Telecom industry is one of the most transparent sectors in the country, which usually doesn’t bear such large scale scams that other sectors are familiar with. This is probably why Mr. Latif Khosa didn’t stay here much â€" rather he was forced to leave the place.

I am here not denying the fact that telecom industry is corruption-proof, but let’s not call it as corrupt as our politics is.

Getting back to TV Shows on Telecom issues, anchors are usually not aware of technological terms and telecom ecosystem and hence they mess up with the dots.

You may disagree with my viewpoint here. That is why we have a poll below to take your input. You can rate these shows in this poll â€" along with sharing your thoughts in comments section.

JailbreakMe Superstar Comex No Longer Works For Apple

It was undoubtedly a disappointing day for the jailbreak loving world when Nicholas Allegra (Comex) publicly announced his departure from the community as a result of accepting an internship at the company he had worked so hard to circumvent in the few years prior. We will never really know if producers of jailbreak tools and tweaks do so in the hope of becoming known by Apple and ultimately offered dream employment with the Cupertino company, but after a year working the fruit Company, Allegra is officially flying solo once again.

The 20-year old student who carries out his daily studies at Brown University is better known to the community by his online moniker Comex and is responsible for some of the simplest to execute but most technically complicated jailbreaks that we have seen in recent times. Jailbreak offerings like JailbreakMe removed the need for iOS devices to be tethered to computers go through the jailbreaking process and instead took advantage of vulnerabilities in Mobile Safari to execute a jailbreak directly on the device through Apple’s own software. Rather than connect a device to a computer, invoke a software procedure and mess around with processes like DFU mode, Comex’s methods devices to be liberated by simply vesting a website on the device itself.

    Nicholas

Comex took to Twitter to inform his many followers that his time with Apple was officially over. His tweet didn’t exactly go into the intricate details behind the parting, choosing to focus purely on the fact that he was no longer an employee of the company.

So… no point in delaying, as of last week, after about a year, I’m no longer associated with Apple.

A simple tweet, to the point and more than capable of injecting a bit of excitement back into a community that are waiting patiently for any news regarding progress on an iPhone 5 or iOS 6 stable jailbreak.

It’s more than likely that we will never know the real reason behind the split. The iOS security enthusiast has stated that it boils down to his forgetting to reply to an email from the company that was an offer to continue his employment with Apple as a remote based intern. It seems that when an offer is on the table you either accept it or it is quickly revoked.

(As for why? Because I forgot to reply to an email.)

However, in a telephone interview with Forbes, Comex himself admitted that things were a little more complicated than just a missed email although he wouldn’t elaborate on that statement.

Apple’s loss could potentially be the jailbreak community’s gain, but it doesn’t look like Comex has any intention of jumping right back into where he left off or even if the terms and conditions of his Apple contract even allow him to work on jailbreak methods at all. We can sit back and watch this one unfold, but for now if you have any intention of purchasing a Wii U when they are released then you might want to pay attention thanks to a Comex follow up tweet stated "hear the Wii U is coming out in a month".

    EBay reports strong quarterly results

EBay posted strong results for its third quarter, but seems cautious for its next forecast for the holiday season as the war between the big retailers and rivals Amazon.com has boiled up.

The company’s third-quarter revenue was $3.4 billion, which is up by 15% and the profit climbed to $718 million i.e. up by 14%. The revenue matched Wall Street expectations while the profit beat by a penny.

EBay’s forecast for the next quarter revenue stands at $3.85 billion to $ 4 billion and the profit of 66 cents to 69 cents per share. Wall Street’s forecast stands at $3.94 billion, with a profit of 69 cents per share.

RJ Hottovy believes that EBay’s cautious forecast came because the big retailers are planning to match Amazon’s online prices. He said, “It’s probably wise for eBay to err on the side of caution because of this price competition.”

Earlier, EBay tested a revamped version of its website which has worked successfully and is expected to be rolled out soon.

The Pirate Bay shifts to Cloud to avoid Shutdown

The Pirate Bay, which has been accused for encouraging illegal file-sharing, has shifted to the cloud to avoid its shutdown. The site will now operate from cloud-hosting providers around the world. The website believes the move will help in cost saving and will make it hard for the law-enforcers to take it offline. It said: “All attempts to attack [us] from now on are an attack on everything and nothing.”

The site was shut down in 2006 when police in Sweden raided The Pirate Bay and shut down its servers. The site further said, “The site that you’re at will still be here, for as long as we want it to. Only in a higher form of being. A reality to us. A ghost to those who wish to harm us.”

Moreover, a representative of TPB told sources, “Moving to the cloud lets TPB move from country to country, crossing borders seamlessly without downtime.

The hosting providers have no idea that they’re hosting The Pirate Bay, and even in the event they found out it would be impossible for them to gather data on the users.”

The statement issued also said, “If the police decide to raid us again there are no servers to take, just a transit router. If they follow the trail to the next country and find the load balancer, there is just a disk-less server there. In case they find out where the cloud provider is, all they can get are encrypted disk-images.”

PTA Blocks Websites for Publishing Propaganda Against Malala Yousafzai

PTA Blocks Websites for Publishing Propaganda Against Malala Yousafzai

By Aamir Attaa · Friday, Oct 19, 2012 0 Comments

Malala Yousafzai 1200 PTA Blocks Websites for Publishing Propaganda Against Malala YousafzaiPakistan Telecommunication Authority has issued a directive to internet service providers to block the access of at least 10 URLs in Pakistan that were allegedly involved in publishing propaganda material against Malala Yousafzai, we have confirmed with sources.

At least three ISPs confirmed ProPakistani about the blockade orders from PTA and have consequently blocked all the mentioned websites, mainly a blog called “American Everyman”, run by Scott Creighton.

Other URLs, that were blocked, are forums that had re-published the stories appearing on “American Everyman”.

“American Everyman” (http://willyloman.wordpress.com/) has various blog entries about Malala Yousafzai, the 14-year girl who was shot in the head by a Talibaan operative for preaching education for girls in Swat.

Scott Creighton, in his blogs, tries to raise questions that lead to suspicion that America has alleged role in attack on Malala for achieving various goals, mainly related to war against terrorism. Scott terms the attack on Malala as a staged incident.

PTA Spokesperson didn’t confirm ProPakistani of the government’s directive for blocking website or the reasons for the blockage and said that she isn’t aware of any such thing. She, however, promised to revert back as soon as she gets hold of anything on this.

Free Proxy Tools That will Help You Unblock YouTube in Pakistan

The recent blanket ban on YouTube in Pakistan has caused a lot of trouble for Internet users.

On one hand we have the issue of blasphemous content being hosted on the website but what the naive authorities fail to realize is that YouTube offers so much more than that. Especially in 2012, the site is now used by over a couple of million users from around Pakistan every month.

From music, to TV shows, online lectures, online Quran, open courseware, every other form of online media has been affected by this blanket ban. The biggest collateral damage has been to Virtual University of Pakistan which the top visited YouTube channel from the country and offered distant-learnings courses and lectures to thousands of students.

Unfortunately there has been no statement on when the ban will be lifted. Below, you will find some methods that will help you get temporary access to YouTube.

    1. Tor Client

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities. In short, it keeps your activity anonymous and lets you browse and access websites which might be blocked in your area. [download]

    2. JonDo

JonDo, formerly JAP, is the ip changer proxy tool you have to install on your computer. It acts as a proxy and will forward the traffic of your internet applications multible encrypted to the mix cascades and so it will hide your ip address. It is a Java application, open source and you can download it for free. [download]

    3. TunnelBear

TunnelBear is the world’s easiest to use consumer VPN software that securely "tunnels" your internet connection to locations around the world. TunnelBear can be used to protect your privacy, to bypass internet censorship and to experience the internet as people in other countries experience it. In simple words, it is an incredibly simple app to experience the internet as if you were living in another country. [download]

    4. HotSpot Shield

HotSpot Shield make a virtual private network (VPN) across your Internet thus allowing you to bypass any filters and watch YouTube video. [download]

    5. Ultrasurf

Ultrasurf is a free proxy-based tool for internet privacy and security that allows you to bypass firewalls and protect your identity online. [download]

Also, I think it is about time that people should explore other YouTube alternatives like Vimeo, DailyMotion and MetaCafe to host their content or even view videos.

EISENHOWER For iPhone Lets You Manage Time And Tasks Using An Effective, Tried And Tested Solution

Productivity apps are aplenty on the iOS App Store, with new apps being added daily to allow users to squeeze the most out of their days. Some of us are able to knuckle down and whizz through growing workloads while others need a more structured layout with the required tasks and chores being clearly defined for the day ahead. There are many different time management philosophies, but there is only one of which I’m aware of, and it is based on the methodologies of a former U.S. President.

The EISENHOWER time management app for iPhone and iPod touch adopts the principals of the Eisenhower Matrix that asks questions to determine whether or not the task at hand is important, and if so, is it urgent? Tasks are then broken down into four different categories depending on their importance and urgency, allowing users of the app to focus on the most pressing one until it is out of the way. The app is excellent at organizing personal and professional tasks in order to increase productivity and do-away with the numerous to-do lists that we find ourselves with.

    EisenhowerIcon

The interface of EISENHOWER is dark and extremely attractive, allowing easy navigation between individual views and parts of the app. Built-in task counters allow eight individual tasks to be assigned to a to-do sheet, with tasks that are currently flagged as open being front and center on the navigation tabs. EISENHOWER also includes a mode that allows users to focus solely on one task in blocks of 30 minute periods with the hope being that it forces us to complete that task without interruption.

    Eisenhower1

Scheduling additional tasks and delegating them to other team members or co-workers is also possible through the app with the use of integrated calendars and emailing capabilities. The developers have also bundled cloud-based synchronization services for those users who purchase the app and create a free account to be used with their web-based service. For $1.99, EISENHOWER offers a decent use of the Eisenhower Matrix.
