Google Brings Instant Previews To iOS Safari
by GadgetGizmodo
Share
9to5mac reports that Google has finally brought their helpful ‘Instant Previews’ feature, previously available only on the desktop browser, down to the mobile platform.
What exactly is ‘Instant Previews’? It offers you a pop-up preview of the website when you tap the small magnifying glass accompanying its link in Google search. The reason this is good is the fact that it saves considerable amount of time by saving you the ordeal of actually loading up the page while searching through lots of websites.
About the implementation in iOS Safari, it has actually been done quite nicely. In iOS Safari you can easily flick through the previews of a particular search query much like the way you flick through Safari’s tabs in iOS.
However, Google’s ‘Instant Previews’ feature for iOS is still not available for all devices as Google is yet to formally announce the ‘Instant Previews’ feature for mobile meaning that this could well be an early and/or limited rollout.
However, if you seem to have gotten this feature, do let us know what you think about it in your comments below.

Geohot To Release Untethered Jailbreak After 2.10.11 (Verizon iPhone 4 Launch) ?
by GadgetGizmodo
Continuing the jailbreak theme today comes news that jailbreak supremo MuscleNerd has claimed that Geohot might release a new untethered jailbreak in the coming weeks.
The news comes after another iPhone developer and hacker Pod2G informed the world that a new vulnerability has been discovered for iOS and that GreenPois0n is being actively worked on as it is clear that Apple has blocked GreenPois0n in its upcoming version of iOS â" version 4.3.
Reading MuscleNerdâs comments it appears we could be getting at least one new untethered jailbreak for at least some devices sooner rather than later.
As our illustrious leader @TaimurAsad points out, the date of February 10th is no coincidence â" thatâs when the Verizon iPhone finally lands in stores. New owners looking for a jailbreak on day 1 could be in luck!
Of course this is still unconfirmed by Geohot himself, so fingers crossed. Hopefully he can pull himself away from all that Sony drama going on in the PlayStation jailbreak scene to help us out in iLand!

Cost of regulatory security compliance? On average, $3.5M
by GadgetGizmodo
By Ellen Messmer
Network World (US)
FRAMINGHAM (01/31/2011) â" The cost of achieving regulatory security compliance is on average $3.5 million each year, according to a survey of 160 individuals leading the IT, privacy and audit efforts at 46 multinational organizations.
âThe True Cost of Compliance,â a research study done by Ponemon Institute and sponsored by Tripwire, makes the point that if that $3.5 million figure for the average cost sounds high, the average cost for organizations that experience non-compliance-related problems is far higher â" $9.4 million. Costs related to âbusiness disruption, reduced productivity, fees, penalties and other legal and non-legal settlement costsâ pile up when legal and regulatory compliance goals are not met, the study asserts.
MORE RESEARCH: Regulatory compliance hogs security pros attention
The array of regulatory requirements facing organizations runs the gamut from the U.S. state laws for data breach to Sarbanes-Oxley to the European Unionâs Privacy Directive and more. But the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard was deemed to be âmost importantâ in terms of influence and âthe most difficult to comply with,â according to the surveyâs respondents.
âPCI seems to affect everyone,â says Rekha Shenoy, Tripwireâs vice president of strategy. She adds that the PCI DSS, unlike some compliance requirements, is very âprescriptiveâ in putting forth whatâs expected in terms of technologies and procedures.
The Ponemon report covered industries that include consumer products, technology, retail, industrial, public sector, healthcare, communications, education and research, financial services, transportation, pharmaceutical and energy. The survey respondents hold job titles that include chief information security officer, compliance officer, IT operations leader, audit director and others.
In divvying up âexpense categories,â the report says the use of âspecialized technologies,â âincident management,â and âaudit and assessmentâ take up large portions of data-compliance costs, with the corporate IT department, line of business and legal division regarded as functional areas that account for significant portions of the expenditures.
The burden of both compliance and non-compliance costs were highest in organizations with fewer than 5,000 employees and smallest in organizations with 25,000 to 75,000 employees, where economies of scale may apply.
In terms of the number of internal compliance audits performed each year, the report says âsurprisingly, 28% of companies say they do not conduct compliance audits, and only 11% say they conduct more than five audits each year.â
However, internal compliance audits seem to be worth it. According to the reportâs analysis, âorganizations that conduct three to five internal compliance audits per year have the lowest per capita compliance cost (average $154). The highest compliance cost (average $341) is associated with organizations that do not conduct any internal compliance audits.â In addition, the lowest per capita non-compliance cost (with an average of $226) is said to be associated with organizations that conduct five or more audits, while the highest per capita non-compliance cost (average $1,275) is associated with organizations that do not conduct audits.

No Blackberry Services for Foreign Missions: [Updated with PTA's Response]
by GadgetGizmodo
By Aamir Attaa · Monday, Jan 31, 2011 2 Comments
PTA has instructed cellular operators to stop BlackBerry services to foreign missions in the country amid concern about the security of the communications, reported Reuters and independently verified by ProPakistani through industry sources.
Industry sources confirmed ProPakistani that cellular companies received letters from PTA in January 2011 for the suspension of Blackberry services to foreign missions.
A source in one of cellular company, requesting anonymity, told ProPakistani that PTA had sent a similar directive some 10 months ago to all cellular companies. This recent letter (in fact 2 letters are sent in January 2010) are to make sure that no cellular company is providing the services to foreign missions.
A highly placed source at PTA communicated ProPakistani that no cellular company can provide Blackberry services to foreign missions and in-bound roamers in first place, so any instruction for suspension of service is supposedly the re-enforcement practice.
Source confirmed that a clause for this is in place when cellular company obtain the clearance certificate before providing blackberry services in the country.
Industry sources revealed that despite the year ago directive, cellular companies were providing blackberry services to foreign embassies and high commission staff.
PTA spokesperson was not available for the comment.
Update:
We just received following response from PTA
In response to a story carried in a section of media, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has clarified that PTA has not issued any directions to mobile service providers to discontinue Blackberry Services to any users.
Operators have been advised to continue providing Blackberry Services to the users .
In an update, Reuters opines that decision has been reversed by the Government of Pakistan.
Following is what Reuter reported over the issue:
Pakistani industry and government officials say that the government had never allowed BlackBerry services to foreign missions and inbound roamers when the services were launched in Pakistan in 2005.
The government also initially banned the more secure BlackBerry Enterprise Server (BES) services in Pakistan.
BES allows users to send and receive secure email and messages, which is difficult for governments to intercept and read.
However, the instructions have since been flouted by all five Pakistani mobile operators. It was not clear why the government allowed them to do so or why it was acting now to enforce the restrictions.
An industry source said that the government had asked all operators in the country to enforce the restrictions.
âThe most critical issue is the provision of BlackBerry services to the foreign embassies, missions and high commissions,â said the source.
âTherefore, all the operators have agreed to close all BlackBerry connections provided to them by January 31,â he said, adding discussions would be held with the PTA to gain more time on the provision of BES to local customers as well as BlackBerry services to incoming roamers.
If fully enforced, the restrictions would mean no BlackBerry services for many of the multinational companies and aid groups, who use the BES service rather than the Blackberry Internet Service, or BIS, which is much less secure.

Unclutter your Gmail inbox using Minimalist Gmail!
by GadgetGizmodo
Gmail, the free e-mail service provided by Google, is full of great features. Users are given plenty of storage space, the ability to instant message other gmail users, and access to googledocs, Googleâs free online alternative to program suites like Microsoft Office or iWork. Unfortunately, along with these great features come some not-so-great ones. The toolbar along the left-hand side is crowded, advertisements take up precious screen space, and a variety of other little annoyances can make the gmail experience less pleasing to the user. The solution: a simple plugin for both Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox called Minimalist Gmail. Hereâs how to install it:
Step 1: Have either Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome installed.
Step 2: Download and install Minimalist Gmail from here.
Step 3: Upon installation, a settings page will open. Configure all your changes here. You may wish to bookmark this page so you can change your settings again later.

With protests growing, Egypt cuts links to Internet
by GadgetGizmodo
88 percent of network routes in Egypt suddenly vanish; government is blamed
By Robert McMillan
IDG News Service (San Francisco Bureau)
SAN FRANCISCO (01/28/2011) â" As protesters continue to clash with police in anti-government demonstrations, Egypt has pulled the plug on the Internet.
The cut-off happened just after midnight, local time, according to Internet monitoring firm Renesys, when the largest Internet Service Providers operating out of the country stopped providing the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing information used to connect the rest of the world with computers in the Egypt.
Internet access isnât the only method of communications hit by the Egyptian governmentâs blackout. It has ordered mobile phone operators to suspend service in some areas, according to Vodafone, which runs a network there. âUnder Egyptian legislation, the authorities have the right to issue such an order and we are obliged to comply,â the company said.
Egypt is experiencing its worst civil unrest in more than 30 years, as citizens have taken to the streets demanding an end to the government of President Hosni Mubarak.
Similar widespread outages have been blamed on cuts to undersea fiber-optic cables, but that doesnât seem to be what happened this time around, said Paul Ferguson, a researcher with security firm Trend Micro. An outage on a cable would not just effect Egypt, it would cut off all of sub-Saharan Africa.â he said. âThis is apparently a deliberate blackout.â
Renesys agreed.
âThe Egyptian government appears to have ordered service providers to shut down all international connections to the Internet,â Renesys said. âCritical European-Asian fiber-optic routes through Egypt appear to be unaffected for now. But every Egyptian provider, every business, bank, Internet cafe, website, school, embassy, and government office that relied on the big four Egyptian ISPs for their Internet connectivity is now cut off from the rest of the world.â
Those four large providers â" Link Egypt, Vodafone/Raya, Telecom Egypt, and Etisalat Misr â" have dropped most of their Internet connectivity. Most Egyptian Web sites are now unreachable and people inside Egypt are largely unable to connect with the outside world using e-mail, instant messaging, or the Web.
But Egyptâs Internet isolation is not complete. One service provider â" Noor Data Networks, a provider used by the Egyptian Stock Exchange â" is unaffected.
Twelve hours after the Internet shutdown began, the Egyptian Stock Exchange website was still accessible from outside the country.
On Twitter, a growing number of users, most of whom seem to be located outside of Egypt, are calling for users with a Wi-Fi router on Noorâs ADSL or dial-up service to remove the password and share their Internet access with other users.
All told, about 88 percent of Egyptâs networks have been cut off, according a blog entry on the Web site of network monitoring toolmaker, BGPmon.
Another network monitoring company Arbor Network, has posted a graphic illustrating the dramatic cut-off in traffic to and from Egypt.
Some countries routinely block access to specific Web sites, but this is the first time that a country has voluntarily severed its own Internet connection.
âThis is a completely different situation from the modest Internet manipulation that took place in Tunisia, where specific routes were blocked, or Iran, where the Internet stayed up in a rate-limited form designed to make Internet connectivity painfully slow. The Egyptian governmentâs actions tonight have essentially wiped their country from the global map,â Renesys said.
Earlier in the week, the Egyptian government had reportedly blocked access to Facebook and Twitter, but with large protests expected Friday, it has apparently taken new steps to prevent people from communicating. â In this case the government seems to be taking a shotgun approach by ordering ISPâs to stop routing all networks,â BGPmon said.
Calls to major Egyptian ISPs and telecommunications rang unanswered on Friday, which is not a working day in the country and most of the Middle East.
âWe are concerned that communication services, including the Internet, social media and even this tweet, are being blocked in Egypt,â U.S. State Dept. Spokesman PJ Crowley said via Twitter late Thursday.

SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT ANNOUNCES ITS NEXT GENERATION PORTABLE ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM
Ultimate Portable Entertainment System Makes Its Debut This Year,
Further Expanding the PlayStation® Business in the Portable Gaming Market
Tokyo, January 27, 2011â" Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) today announced its next generation portable entertainment system (codename: NGP), which delivers the ultimate portable entertainment experience. NGP will make its debut at the end of the year 2011.
NGP is designed to offer unparalleled interactive entertainment that is only possible on PlayStation®. This new system offers a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context, made possible by leveraging SCEâs experience from both PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) and PlayStation®3 (PS3®) entertainment systems.
Deep and immersive gaming is at the core of PlayStationâs DNA, and NGP is the latest embodiment of this vision. By having both Wi-Fi and 3G network connectivity, together with various applications, NGP will enable infinite possibilities for users to "encounter," "connect," "discover," "share" and "play" with friends wherever they are. Within the device are a range of features that provide a genuinely cutting-edge, next generation ultimate portable entertainment experience.
ã»Stunning OLED and Revolutionary User Interface
NGP incorporates a beautiful multi-touch 5-inch organic light emitting display (OLED) as the front display. A high-performance CPU / GPU combined with OLED enables rich, visually striking graphics never seen before on a portable entertainment system, for both games and other digital entertainment content. The new system also incorporates a unique multi-touch pad on the rear, and together with the front touch display, NGP offers new game play allowing users to interact directly with games in three dimension-like motion, through "touch, grab, trace, push and pull" moves of the fingers.
ã»Super Oval Design and Dual Analog Sticks
While succeeding the basic design philosophy of PSP, NGP adopts the Super Oval Design form factor, created to fit comfortably in usersâ hands. For the first time, a portable entertainment system will feature two analog sticks, which enable a wider range of game genres to be brought into the portable experience.
ã»LiveAreaâ¢
Every game title for NGP will be provided with a space called "LiveAreaâ¢" where users can share the fun and excitement with other players. Users will have access to the latest information of games provided from SCE and 3rd party developers and publishers through PlayStation®Network. Additionally, NGP users will be able to view an "Activity" log that is constantly updated with accomplishments from users who are playing the same game, which in turn can trigger active real-time communication among users.
ã»Near
SCE will also provide location-based services on NGP as part of the basic features utilizing PlayStation Network. The new application called "Near," developed specifically for this service and the network, will be pre-installed in the system to let users find out what their friends in the vicinity are playing now or what they were playing recently. Users can meet their friends and new players virtually, regardless of what games they are playing, simply by sharing their game information across different dimensions of time and distance.
ã»New Game Medium
NGP adopts a new game medium, a small flash memory based card, dedicated for NGP software titles. Taking advantage of the flash memory feature, this innovative card can store the full software titles plus add-on game content or the game save data directly on to the card. By adopting flash memory based card, SCE will be able to provide game cards with higher capacity in the future, allowing developers to store more game data to deliver rich and immersive games.
NGP will also come equipped with two cameras on its front and rear, as well as three motion sensors, gyroscope, accelerometer and electronic compass, all of which are designed to enable users to enjoy the world of entertainment that is linked with real life experiences.
PlayStation®Suite (PS Suite), announced today, will also closely coordinate with NGP. The newly developed and released game content for Android⢠based portable devices can also be enjoyed on NGP. As a result, users will have access to not only the most leading-edge content, but also some of the more casual experiences that typify the mobile market place.
SCE will vigorously promote NGP towards the launch as the next generation portable entertainment platform and deploy various measures to further expand the portable gaming market.

Apple Working On Physical Keyboard With Motion Control to Replace Mouse
by GadgetGizmodo
Patent applications arenât usually the most exciting of things but Apple isnât your usual kind of company. The latest patent to be filed by the Cupertino outfit, and found by MacRumors, is for a new type of keyboard that the company believes could remove the need for a separate pointing device.
FingerWorks, a company acquired by Apple all the way back in 2005, has been working on touch-sensitive keyboards for a while. Theyâve made many keyboards over the years but theyâve all fallen at the same hurdle: people like tactile feedback from a keyboard. Itâs the reason people still use the same keyboard they did 10 years ago â" it just needs to feel ârightâ.
Apple clearly knows what itâs up against when it comes to designing a whole new type of keyboard:
Over the last forty years there have been numerous attempts made to introduce an alternative to the standard keyboard. The changes include, but are not limited to, non-QWERTY layouts, concave and convex surfaces, capacitive keys, split designs, membrane keys, etc. However, although such alternative keyboards may provide improved usability or ergonomics, they have failed to replace or duplicate the commercial success of the conventional mechanical keyboard.
Now, FingerWorks co-founder John Elias has submitted a patent for a physical keyboard that incorporates touch in new and rather interesting ways.
So how does a physical keyboard also work as a mouse? The patent is for a keyboard incorporating a row of four âslot camerasâ that can track finger movement just above the keyboardâs surface. The tracking could be activated by a specific key, or combination of key strokes.
Itâs an interesting take on the problem of replacing the mouse: a pointing device thatâs been around longer than most peripherals. Perhaps itâs time we moved on.
Perhaps Appleâs the company to make us.

Apple Airs New Verizon and AT&T iPhone 4 Commercial Saying âTwo Is Better Than Oneâ
by GadgetGizmodo

Share
Earlier, we reported on a new commercial from Verizon Wireless meant to showcase the Verizon iPhone 4, the commercial however, did not even offer a single glimpse of the iPhone 4, it ended on a note saying âit beginsâ, however, while we have yet to wait until February 3rd when it indeed does begin, Apple has started airing a new commercial which shows the iPhone 4 both on Verizon and AT&T. More on that, after the break.
The commercial in question, does not show anything about the differences between the iPhones on each particular network, rather it shows them side by side performing the same tasks, what might be the reason behind this, would obviously be best know to Apple and the networks. The commercial ends on a note saying:
Two is better than one
One of the major differences between these devices is the fact that the Verizon iPhone 4 is CDMA based, which most definitely is its defining feature, other than the fact that it ends AT&Tâs long exclusivity of the iPhone.
Have a look at the commercial down below.

Cydia Theme Center Puts iOS Themes At Your Fingertips [Jailbreak]
by GadgetGizmodo
Adding a spot of color to an otherwise sparse iPhone home screen is one of the main reasons to jailbreak an iDevice these days, and until today finding the right theme has been a chore. Thatâs where Cydiaâs new Theme Center comes in.
Theme Center is only now possible after a recent update made to Cydia by master of all things jailbreak, Jay Freeman. The update allows users to check the store for previously purchased apps and packages as well as implementing a new database. Itâs this database that means users will be able to browse featured themes and download them in either standard or Retina Display-optimized versions.
As of writing this post, the selection of themes is limited to those chosen by the staff of ModMyi or MacCiti. The plan is to allow users to submit their own themes and vote on the best ones at a later date. Even with the limited selection available, over 15,000 people used the feature in just one hour.
All in all, itâs a great addition to the Cydia store and one that showâs Freemanâs continued support of the jailbreak scene. With the advent of the App Store and then the relaxations of some iOS limitations many thought jailbreaking would lose its appeal.
With features like Theme Center coming to Cydia, we canât see that happening any time soon!

Google's CEO switch could be a risky move
by GadgetGizmodo
By Juan Carlos Perez
IDG News Service (Miami Bureau)
MIAMI (01/20/2011) â€" Google’s decision to change CEOs, announced on the same day it reported yet another blockbuster quarter, begs the question of whether the company is trying to fix something that isn’t broken.
Google announced Thursday that Eric Schmidt, who was recruited as CEO in 2001, will hand over that role to co-founder Larry Page in early April.
In addition to running day-to-day operations, Page will continue to lead Google’s product development. Schmidt, as executive chairman, will focus on external initiatives such as visiting customers, meeting with government regulators and negotiating with partners. Google’s other co-founder, Sergey Brin, will focus on “strategic projects, and especially new products.
The goal is to streamline decision-making, the trio said during a conference call. They stressed that Page is ready to be CEO and that they are happy with their roles in the reorganization, which they said will improve Google’s already solid financial performance, technical innovation and business growth.
They had better be right, or the move could go down as a management blunder of historic proportions.
When Schmidt took over as CEO almost a decade ago, Google was a promising but small, privately held company focused exclusively on Web search and without much of a business model to speak of. It was led by Page and Brin, two brilliant Stanford computer-science graduate students with little executive management experience.
Over the years Schmidt has helped turn Google, which was founded in 1998, into one of the largest, most successful and influential publicly traded companies in the world. His role has often been described as providing “adult supervision at a company whose young co-founders like to do things in unconventional ways.
“Schmidt has a great track record and has really steered Google to great success, said Gartner analyst Ray Valdes.
Schmidt, who previously had been Novell CEO and Sun CTO, has been the public face of Google with his calm, relaxed demeanor, while running the company as a “triumvirate with Page and Brin.
“Having Eric as the front of Google has been tremendous for Google, and there is no doubt that bringing his perspective has been critical for good decision-making at the company, IDC analyst Al Hilwa said via e-mail.
Some wondered if Page is up to the mammoth task of running such a large, powerful and increasingly diverse company.
“I guess the question is whether being Google CEO is the place to start your executive training. I can say with some assurance that if [Page] went to apply for the CEO job somewhere he wouldn’t get it, said Allen Weiner, another Gartner analyst.
Valdes wondered if the behind-the-scenes scenario involves Schmidt stepping down voluntarily as a result of fatigue after an intense decade at the helm, and Page taking over on an interim basis until a new, more permanent leader is found.
Analyst and publisher Danny Sullivan at SearchEngineLand.com had a similar thought. “The two cofounders are notoriously difficult to pin down for any event, such as doing major press interviews or conference appearances. Part of Schmidt’s role has been to be the ‘dependable face’ of Google for such things. But being that face can take a toll, he wrote.
But Google was also overdue for a management change, Sullivan wrote, noting that a decade “may as well be 100 years of Internet time.
Steve Arnold, an analyst who heads the firm ArnoldIT, faulted Schmidt for leaving Google too dependent on search advertising. “It has not diversified its revenue streams in a meaningful way, Arnold said. The financial success that Google has enjoyed has been largely due to ad sales, and was probably little influenced by Schmidt, he said.
Arnold also finds fault with Schmidt’s public comments, which have sometimes fuelled existing controversies. And he notes that Google has had problems retaining talented employees, who sometimes leave to go to Facebook and more promising startups.
Consumer Watchdog, an organization that has been critical of Google’s privacy policies and missteps, said it welcomes the CEO change.
“Eric Schmidt has put his foot in his mouth so far on key issues like privacy that he’s kicked himself out of the CEO’s office, said John M. Simpson, director of Consumer Watchdog’s Inside Google Project, in a statement.
But while Google continues to generate most of its revenue from ads on its search result pages and partner websites, the company has spread its wings during Schmidt’s tenure. It started by complementing its search service with other consumer online services, often rocking established markets, as it did with webmail when it launched Gmail in 2004.
It has also become a key mobile player with its Android platform and with mobile versions of its various services and applications. The company has entered the enterprise software market with Google Apps, and its Chrome browser and operating system could leave it poised to become a provider of a new personal computing platform.
But Schmidt was also at the helm for some controversies Google found itself in over the past decade, including a number of privacy-related fiascos and thorny copyright-ingringement lawsuits from book publishers, media conglomerates and major companies.
A big challenge for Page will be tackling the influence of social media and social-networking sites, namely Facebook and Twitter, which have encroached on Google’s territory both in advertising and distributing online content.
“One of the things missing from Google’s strategy has been the social component, Gartner’s Weiner said. “I think the ability to move on a major social-networking strategy may come more easily from a younger CEO. In fact, Google’s struggles with the social Web may have played a part in the CEO switch, he said.
Google also faces tests internationally, especially in high-growth areas like China, India and Russia, where the company’s track record has been mixed, Valdes said.
“Google’s challenges are visible on the horizon and it’s likely that new blood, a new perspective, is needed, he said.
Whatever happens, IDC’s Hilwa said he hopes Schmidt will continue to participate in major decisions at the company.
“Eric, Larry and Sergey have always effectively acted as a co-CEOs, he said. “Being able to put their heads together on important decisions has served them well in the past. One would hope that they keep this consultative management style.

In other news: The Chinese government has now approved the Apple iPad 3G for sale in China, and a confirmation has been made by an Apple spokesperson that the company indeed is releasing a 3G version of its popular tablet in the Chinese market.
Caroline Wu, the Apple spokesperson has declined to comment on a particular release date or timeframe in which iPad 3G can be expected to appear in the Chinese marker for sale.
Currently in China, Apple only sells the Wi-Fi version of the iPad, which is marketed as WLAN in China, the reason behind that was restrictions from the Chinese government. However, now Chinaâs Ministry of Industry and Radio Authority website shows that the council has approved the iPad 3G devices.
Now, restrictions aside, Chinaâs premier carrier, China Unicom, can start selling the Apple iPad 3G, legally.

You Gotta See This! For iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G [REVIEW]
by GadgetGizmodo
You Gotta See This, by Boinx Software is a panoramic photography app exclusive to the new iPod touch and the iPhone 4 since it utilizes the gyroscope feature found only in these two iOS devices. The app is not a typical panoramic imaging app where you need to hold your iPhone / iPod camera at the same level while they take multiple images which are later stitched together. Instead, it starts taking pictures at once when you press the camera button and move your stretched out arm around in an arc in order to capture the scene.
When you move the arm, the border around camera preview is white which means that you are moving at the correct speed while it turns red if you move too quickly. Once youâre done, just press the camera button to stop it. The app then begins to generate your panoramic image in a unique collage of photos which are overlapped and aligned in a way to create a full picture. In my experience, this didnât turn out as perfect as I had hoped even after several tries, but I guess it depends a lot on the scene which is being captured e.g landscapes, concerts etc.
There are several different themes used by the app to create images ranging from light table collage to a vintage fabric or the wall of tiles. The photos can be exported to the camera roll, or shared directly on Twitter and Facebook.
In short, the app is mostly aimed at creative photographers who love to try and create something unique while any regular user such as myself wonât be bored with it either. It is available on the App Store for only $1.99. Check out a simple demo video of You Gotta See This! given below:

iOS 4.3 Beta 2 Confirms iPad 2 FaceTime, Camera & PhotoBooth Apps!
by GadgetGizmodo
Yesterday, iOS 4.3 beta 2 was released by Apple to the developer community less than a week after the first beta. It seems that folks at MacRumors have been digging hard around the latest beta ever since and have found fairly solid evidence that pretty much confirms not only a Camera app for the iPad 2 but FaceTime and PhotoBooth apps as well. We already wrote about the leaked iPad 2 Camera.app images earlier which were extracted from the first beta of iOS 4.3 while this new discovery pretty much seals the deal.
The above image homeScreenOverlayFaceTime~ipad.png was discovered in iOS 4.3 beta 2 firmware by MacRumors which shows a preview of the wallpaper selection. Notice the new icons for Camera, FaceTime, and PhotoBooth. According to MacRumors:
FaceTime will allow iPad 2 owners to video conference with iPhone, iPod Touch and Mac owners. The standard Camera app will allow you to take photographs. We still canât say for sure if there will be a back camera, as the camera app could possibly be used only for the front camera. Finally, the Photo Booth icon confirms that Apple is including their Mac OS X Photo Booth app which allows users to take fun photos and apply various filters to them.
Meanwhile, donât forget to check out our complete roundup of all the new features such as video camera effects, new fonts, hardware rotation lock, redesigned keyboard and more which will be introduced in iOS 4.3 here!

Apple Internally Testing Multitouch Gestures for iPhone 4
by GadgetGizmodo
BGR has got hold of some exclusive screenshots which shows multitouch gestures options for iPhone 4, similar to what we saw for iPad in iOS 4.3 Beta 1. The screenshots are apparently taken from an iPhone 4 unit which is currently being tested internally at the Appleâs Cupertino campus.
Interestingly, you will be using same four or five fingers gestures on your iPhoneâs screen too, which is strange given the small size of the screen when compared to iPad.
Â
But who knows, maybe its going to change, or maybe those rumors we are hearing about next iPhone and iPad dropping âHomeâ button are true after all?
Also, Apple has confirmed that the gestures option for iPad (and probably iPhone too) wont be available to public when iOS 4.3 goes gold. They are probably saving it as a major feature for iOS 5 when it is introduced with iPhone 5 in June this year. (via BGR)

DOS Emulator for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch Is Back On The App Store
by GadgetGizmodo
Tweet
Share
It was back on October 27th when we reported about a DOS emulator for the iPhone and iPad that had surfaced for a brief time period and was pulled from the App Store, the name was iDos, and now it has once again surfaced on the App Store and has not been pulled out till we published this post.
iDos is based upon a software called DOSBox, and was reportedly pulled out because it allowed users to install and run executables within the emulator. Interestingly, with DOS being a property of Microsoft, which indeed is a rival of Apple, it was confusing to comprehend how Apple had approved the last version of iDos in the first place.
However now, iTunes file-sharing has been turned off in iDos as well as the ability to run .exe files, meaning that iDos has now been tailored for some classic nostalgic gaming only, so it looks like there are less chances of this app being pulled out again.
iDos requires iOS 4.0 higher and can be installed on the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.
Download iDos for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

Alibaba invests US$1.5B in warehouses
by GadgetGizmodo
The move is to help improve delivery service of online shipped goods in China
By Michael Kan
IDG News Service (Beijing Bureau)
BEIJING (01/19/2011) â" Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba is investing US$1.5 billion in building warehouses with the aim of reducing the time it takes for people to receive items bought online.
Alibaba has grown to become the e-commerce leader in China, with itâs Taobao.com business the countryâs largest online retailer. This month Taobao reported it has 370 million registered users, more than double what it had in 2009.
But the explosive growth threatens to strain the shipping and logistics business in China. âE-commerce in China is growing too fast, and exceeds the physical capacity of logistic companies in China,â Alibaba Chief Strategy Officer Zeng Ming said at a press conference Wednesday.
Facing this bottleneck, Alibaba is looking ahead and wants to grow the logistics industry. The company and its financing partners will commit between $3.01 billion to $4.52 billion in the next three to five years in logistics development. Alibaba hopes this first stage of funding will then lead its other partners in e-commerce to invest, bringing the total amount to $15.05 billion.
âTen years from now, we hope that anywhere in China if you buy online, the longest you will have to wait is eight hours for your goods,â said Alibaba CEO Jack Ma at an event detailing the companyâs strategy.
On the information technology side, Alibaba aims to improve the quality of delivery service with an online supply-chain management platform. Merchants that use Taobao can better streamline the way their products arrive to consumers via the site.
While Taobao has 370 million registered users, the company still has room to grow. Official figures released on Wednesday report that China now has 457 million Internet users, adding 73 million new users during 2010. The figure is expected to grow as more rural residents get access to the Internet.
Alibaba stressed that the investment in the warehouses does not mean that the company will start directly managing shipping, or begin delivering goods. âWe never said we are a dot-com company. From day one, we always said we are a service company,â Zeng said. âWe are only leveraging Internet technology to help SMEs and entrepreneurs in China to grow. We will do whatever is necessary to make the e-commerce in China move forward.â

How to Jailbreak iOS 4.3 on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch [Guide]
by GadgetGizmodo
The following detailed step by step guide will help you jailbreak iOS 4.3 Beta on iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G using PwnageTool bundles.
Hereâs what you will need:
- PwnageTool 4.1.2
- Access to iOS 4.3 Beta firmware
- iTunes 10.1.1
- Mac OS X
- PwnageTool bundle for iPhone 4, iPad or iPod touch 4G
Note:
- Cydia is fully working on iOS 4.3 Beta.
- It is a semi-tethered jailbreak.
- Your baseband will not be upgraded during restore process.
WARNING: The jailbreaking procedure is complex, and hence is meant for advanced users only. It will require you to make your own ramdisk because the latest official version of PwnageTool makes a broken one for iOS 4.3. Proceed at your own risk only. We are not to be held responsible if you end up bricking your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.
Modifying PwnageTool
Step 1: Download PwnageTool bundle for your version of iOS device. Extract the .zip folder, in there you will find two files: CydiaInstaller.bundle and a .bundle file, for this guide, we are using iPhone 4 bundle iPhone3, 1_4.3_8F5148b.bundle. Move all these files to your desktop.
Step 2: Download PwnageTool 4.1.2 and copy it to your desktop. Right click, and then click on âShow Package Contentsâ as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 3: Navigate to Contents/Resources/FirmwareBundles/ and paste iPhone3, 1_4.3_8F5148b.bundle file in this location.
Step 4: Now navigate to Contents/Resources/CustomPackages and here replace the CydiaInstaller.bundle file with the version that you downloaded in Step 1, and then simply close this folder.
Building a Custom Firmware
Step 5: Download iOS 4.3 Beta. Move this file to your desktop.
Step 6: Start PwnageTool in âExpert modeâ and select your device:
Step 7: Browse for iOS 4.3 beta firmware for your device as shown in the screenshot below:
Step 8: Now select âBuildâ to start creating custom 4.3 firmware file:
Step 9: PwnageTool will now create the custom .ipsw file for your iPhone which will be jailbroken.
Step 10: Once you have created the custom firmware, quit PwnageTool. Donât restore to this firmware yet.
Creating Custom Ramdisk for iOS 4.3 Custom Firmware
Step 11: Download Ramdisk_Maker.zip by DjayB6, extract the file, and move the folder to your desktop.
Step 12: Now open ramdisk_maker.sh file, and edit the paths required in a program like TextEdit, as shown highlighted in the screenshot below.
Step 13: Now start Terminal and run the following commands:
cd desktop
cd ramdisk_maker
./ramdisk_maker.sh
Now from here on, this automated script in Terminal will guide you on what to do next as shown highlighted in the screenshot below.
Step 14: First, create a folder on desktop named My_Ramdisk. Then change the extension of the original iOS 4.3 Beta file from .ipsw to .zip, and then extract this .zip file.
Step 15: Here you will see a file named 038-0408-002.dmg. This is the file we need. Copy this file to My_Ramdisk folder that you created on desktop.
Step 16: Once you have done that, you will notice that Terminal screen will automatically move to the next step as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 17: Now go to ramdisk_maker folder that you saved earlier on desktop, here open the file Options.plist in a program like TextWrangler (available for free on the Mac App Store). Here change the <integer></integer> value under SystemPartitionSize <key></key> to 1116, as also shown highlighted in the screenshot below.
Step 18: Now save this Options.plist file and move it to My_Ramdisk folder. At this point, you will once again notice that Terminal will automatically move to complete the process.
Step 19: Once done, you will now notice a new file named final_ramdisk.dmg in My_Ramdisk folder. Rename this file as 038-0408-002.dmg
Step 20: Now change the extension of the custom iOS 4.3 Beta firmware file that you created earlier from .ipsw to .zip, and then extract this .zip file.
Step 21: Here, replace 038-0408-002.dmg file with the one you created in Step 19 above.
Step 22: Now select all files, and click on âCompress 9 Itemsâ so that it is converts back into .zip file. Now change the extension of this .zip file to .ipsw and you are done making the custom firmware, with fixed ramdisk.
Restore iOS 4.3 Custom Firmware Using iTunes
Step 23: Start iTunes, click on your iOS device icon from the sidebar in iTunes. Now press and hold left âaltâ (option) button on Mac, or Left âShiftâ button if you are on Windows on the keyboard and then click on âRestoreâ (Not âUpdateâ or âCheck for Updateâ) button in the iTunes and then release this button.
This will make iTunes prompt you to select the location for your custom firmware 4.3 file. Select the required custom .ipsw file that you created in Step 22 above, and click on âOpenâ.
Step 24: Now sit back and enjoy as iTunes does the rest for you. This will involve a series of automated steps. Be patient at this stage and donât do anything silly. Just wait while iTunes installs the new firmware 4.3 on your iOS device. Your iOS device screen at this point will be showing a progress bar indicating installation progress. After the installation is done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will be jailbroken on iOS 4.3.
Booting in Tethered Mode
Last but not the least, since there is no untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3 yet, we will have to boot it into a tethered jailbroken state. To do this, we will make use of a utility named âtetheredbootâ as shown in the steps below.
Step 25: Download tetheredboot.zip utility for Mac OS X and extract the .zip file.
Step 26: First, we will need three files from the original iOS 4.3 Beta firmware namely: kernelcache.release.n90, iBEC.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu, and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu.
Change the extension of the original iOS 4.3 Beta file from .ipsw to .zip, like you did in Step 14 above, and then extract this .zip file.
Now copy kernelcache.release.n90 file, and then copy iBEC.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu, and iBSS.n90ap.RELEASE.dfu files which are found under /Firmware/dfu/.
Move all these three files, and tetheredboot utility to a new folder named âtetheredbootâ on the desktop as shown in the screenshot below.
Step 27: Now to boot your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch into tethered mode, connect it with your computer and start it in Recovery Mode by holding Home and Power buttons until the connect to iTunes screen appears on your device.
Step 28: Start Terminal and run the following commands:
sudo sh
enter your administrator password, then:
cd desktop/tetheredboot
./tetheredboot iBSS kernel
You should now see some code running in the Terminal windows, at some point, it will ask you to enter DFU mode. Now follow the following steps to enter DFU mode:
- Hold Power and Home buttons for 10 seconds
- Now release the Power button but continue holding the Home button for 10 more seconds
- You device should now be in DFU mode
Now wait for your device to boot, Terminal at this point will be showing âExiting libpois0nâ message. After a short while, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will be booted in a jailbroken tethered mode !
