Ever wondered who the World’s Smallest Woman is? We know!

Saad Hamid on December 28, 2011

This is a strange question but do you know who is the world's smallest woman? Until a couple of weeks ago it was the 22-year-old American Bridgette Jordan who measured 2ft 3inch (~68.5 centimeters) but the title was overtaken by Jyoti Amge from India almost a fortnight ago as she turned 18.

Jyoti Amge (born December 16, 1993), a resident of Nagpur, India, is currently the world's smallest woman according to the Limca Book of Records and Guinness Book of Records.

As of December 16, 2011 she has been officially declared the World's smallest woman by Guinness Book of Records with a height of 62.8 cm. Her restricted height is due to a growth anomaly called achondroplasia.

Not only does she have her own small desk and chair at school but she also has to sleep in a specially-made bed and uses utensils that are smaller than average. Jyoti is set to appear in two Bollywood films next year.

Lock Screen Weather: Display Local Weather On iPhone Lock Screen Without Jailbreaking

One thing that never ceases to amaze me is the level of creativity that developers seem to muster up in order to bypass the restrictions imposed upon them by the Apple developer guidelines. In the past month alone we have seen a number of popular applications accepted into the App Store and then subsequently be pulled from sale by Apple due to a breach of the guidelines.

Lock Screen Weather

The developer App Store and human interface guidelines that are given to iOS developers offer an intriguing insight into the world of Apple, and are regularly criticized by developers on other platforms for the strict restrictions they place. However, if you take the time to read through them, the first thing you notice is they are generally common sense, designed to give the best user experience for the customer. Secondly, they are written in an extremely casual manner with one part saying:

We will reject any apps for any content or behaviour that we believe is over the line. What line, you ask? Well, as a Supreme Court Justice one said, "I’ll know it when I see it". And we think you will also know it when you come across it.

The new Lock Screen Weather application by Pavel Kozarek adopts an interesting approach to produce an app which would otherwise be rejected by Apple for a breach of the guidelines. Lock Screen Weather allows us to display local weather information and graphics directly on the devices lock screen. This doesn’t seem too revolutionary, considering weather widgets tools have existed within Cydia for a number of years. However, the interesting thing about this application is that it is available directly within the App Store and does not require a jailbreak.

If having the weather on your lock screen is important to you, then you can expect the following features from Lock Screen Weather:

    • Current weather conditions on your lock screen (location configured through settings panel).
    • An optional five day weather forecast.
    • Support for tens of thousands of cities around the world.
    • Current weather and future forecasts updated regularly.
    • Both Fahrenheit and Celsius units supported.
    • An original set of weather graphics for every conceivable weather condition.

Perhaps the most interesting and unorthodox thing about this application is the way in which the developer has gotten around the developer guidelines. The weather application works by playing a silent track via the devices iPod app and taking advantage of the lock screen album art display. Due to the way the iPod app dynamically handles the album artwork of a playing track, the screen is updated whenever the device is locked.

mzl.suxwlpwy.320x480-75

Lock Screen Weather is clearly a very clever application, and from a technical mindset it is a very clever implementation. However, to work effectively it requires a constant playing track through the iPod which in turn would stop the user from playing their own music. If the feedback on the App Store is to be believed, the application also bypasses all sound notifications other than the ringtone meaning alerts such as text messages will no longer work.

Facebook Messenger for Windows Available for Download

Titled Facebook Messenger, Facebook has officially released an app for Windows which lets you chat with your friends, watch their recent posts in the news ticker as well as stay up to date with notifications. According to Facebook, the app is being rolled out to a limited number of users, which answers the question as to why there isn’t an official page on this but just a help topic entry only. Strangely, despite being in trial period, Facebook hasn’t called the Messenger app beta.

Facebook has previously released Messenger apps for mobile platforms namely iOS (Read more about Facebook Messenger for iPhone here and here), Android and Blackberry. Lucky for us, Facebook decided not to go with any third party framework such as Adobe ‘hog’ Air to build the app but has used native Windows APIs. The app even supports Aero Snap in Windows 7 â€" you can drag it to the side of the screen to make it stick there â€" similar to how Windows 8 metro apps work.

Download Facebook Messenger for Windows

The app shows friend requests, messages previews and notifications. Underneath, it shows the news ticker, friends for chat and then the search bar. An annoyance we’ve faced during testing was that the look and feel of messages is horrible when compared to the Facebook Messenger apps for mobile platforms. You can’t see previews of images and videos in messages like you can on Facebook and on the mobile Messenger apps. Clicking on any of the messages in the dropdown in the header takes you to Facebook in your browser instead of opening a messenger window which really beats the purpose of this app. You can’t even change your online/offline status from the app itself either so in many ways, the app is very restricted.

For version 1, the app is pretty decent but we would like to see this app improved as these tiny bugs make it annoying sometimes. The notifications on the desktop make it worthy enough for any Facebook addict’s desktop though.

Pakistan Tops Google’s Search List for Adult Content

The data analysis for the Google search engine’s terms entered for various search engine results in 2011 are in. According to the analysis, Pakistan is said to have won the top slot in search for results related to the term ‘sex.’ Vietnam and India are also on the top 5 countries whose people searched for similar adult content on the popular search engine’s site. While various cities of Pakistan also managed to figure in the top ten cities to search for adult content on Google at various times of the year, no Pakistani city featured on any of these lists during the months of February and August 2011. Google has an intricate system of formulating these ratings which basically includes figuring out the number of total searches for any particular term made over a period of time and then dividing it by the total number of searches on Google over time. Needless to say, the Google Trends results have once more sparked off a furious, controversial debate regarding the results.

Pakistan Tops Charts for Searching Sex on Google

Pakistan Tops Charts for Searching Sex on Google

By Mehwish Khan · Friday, Dec 30, 2011 30 Comments

With over 20 million internet users and growing fast, Pakistan tops Google search trends globally for searching keyword “Sex”. Though Sri Lanka outranked Pakistan in 2011 for same keyword search, however, Pakistan still remains at top for all time search trends for keyword “Sex”.

Check below screens for details:

search results thumb Pakistan Tops Charts for Searching Sex on Google

search results 01 thumb Pakistan Tops Charts for Searching Sex on Google

Islamabad featured in the top 10 cities worldwide to search the word ‘sex’ in December 2011.

Provincial capital Lahore also featured in the top 10 cities for the months of January, March, April, May, June, July, September, October, November and December 2011.

The months of February and August (Ramazan) were the only two months in 2011 that did not feature any cities from Pakistan in the global ranking.

Similarly, Pakistan has this tendency of topping charts for other related keywords. Check below:

This information and screens are provided by Google Trends that analyzes a portion of Google web searches to compute how many searches have been done for the terms entered, relative to the total number of searches done on Google over time.

To rank the top regions, cities, or languages, Google Trends first looks at a sample of all Google searches to determine the areas or languages from which they received the most searches for the first term. Then, for those top cities, Google Trends calculates the ratio of searches for the term coming from each city divided by total Google searches coming from the same city.

The city ranking and the bar charts alongside each city name both represent this ratio.

Google Trends uses IP address information from server logs to make a best guess about where queries originated.

NCInstaCall For iPhone Lets You Make Phone Calls Directly From Notification Center

One of the most notable new additions to iOS 5 was the inclusion of Notification Center. One central place on iOS powered devices which allows you to always know what’s up and what went down by displaying emails, texts, calendar events, app notifications, breaking news, latest scores and whatever else may tickle your fancy. With one powerful swipe of your finger, you can be the master of your notification universe by displaying the new Notification Center.

    NCInstaCall

The development and inclusion of Notification Center in iOS 5 exists purely to solve a problem. Alerts and Notifications in previous versions of the operating system were handled by ugly, obtrusive UIAlertView’s which offered a terrible user experience and didn’t fit the otherwise seamless flow of iOS. As so often is the way, innovation and change was born out of necessity with Notification Center being developed to rectify the problems created by the previous system.

Since the launch of iOS 5 we have already seen an influx of tweaks and widgets created by the jailbreak development commusnity which hook into the new Notification Center to make certain tasks easier. These tweaks have included mimicking the functionality of SBSettings, adding RSS feeds, integrating social media timelines, displaying powerful media player controls and having the ability to quickly and efficiently show system preferences and statistics. Each one of these tweaks addresses a specific issue, and increases the performance of the native Notification Center.

The latest released tweak designed for use within Notification Center addresses an issue which I am yet to see covered with an iOS 5 tweak. 14 year old developer Will Coughlin from Alabama has provided the community with a free of charge tweak called NCInstaCall which allows device owners to make a quick telephone call to a user specified number from within Notification Center. NCInstaCall has no Springboard icons and is classified as an add on which can be enabled or disabled via the notifications section of the devices default Settings app.

The tweak shows an enterprising nature from the teenage developer who has addressed an issue which had yet to be covered.  It is also a very professional looking implementation which does not look out of place on a non themed iOS device. NCInstaCall is available now through the Big Boss repository free of charge.

You will obviously need to have a jailbroken device to get it to work. For jailbreaking iOS 5 tethered using Redsn0w, you can follow our complete step by step guide posted here, or here if you want to use Sn0wbreeze on Windows. Since jailbreak on iOS 5 is currently limited to tethered boot only, you can install ‘SemiTether’ patch (instructions here) from Cydia to make your jailbreak semi-tethered on iOS 5. For those of you on iOS 5.0.1 can follow our instructions posted here on how to jailbreak using Redsn0w, or here using Ac1dSn0w (instructions with Ac1dSn0w Beta 2 here), or here using Sn0wbreeze.

Show Album Art in App Switcher on iOS with this Cydia Tweak

Normally when a music or video app is running, its icon shows in the application switcher tray in iOS. A few examples of such apps are the Music (formally iPod), YouTube and Vevo. How cool would it be if instead of the icon, the album art of the currently playing son shows instead of the Music app? Well, we aren’t sure since that’s not one area we see often, but you can find out by installing AlbumArt in AppSwitcher tweak from Cydia.

    IBA Unconference Flags Blogocracy

Taking the blogosphere to newer heights, the 2nd Annual Pakistan Blog Awards and the series of tri-city Unconferences aimed to bring leadership to Pakistan’s New Media voices. And these by and large, are voices of the bloggers active on a platform that has no downtime! Rightly termed an era of blogocracy, information today is indeed influenced by the opinions of the masses, one tenth of which in active on the internet. As compared to the traditional electronic and broadcast media that promote one-way communication, the era of blogocracy has surged in an interactive platform of exchange that is built on a two-way communication medium.   As more and more social media enthusiasts jump to it, blogocracy has channelized thoughts of all those that belong to an otherwise “constipated society and a constipated conventional media” in a medium that is apolitical. What this calls for, is leadership to be practiced effectively and with integrity within the new media voices, so that blogocracy is kept free of bureaucracy and bias.

Opening the Unconference Sessions in Karachi on the 22nd of December, was Dr. Ishrat Hussain,  Dean and Director of IBA, who was invited to the stage by the sessions’ host, Rabia Garib, Editor-In-Chief of CIO Pakistan, and Badar Khushnood, Country Consultant for Google.   Highlighting the role of New Media and the role of youth in promoting it, Dr. Ishrat concluded his keynote inviting the first panel on stage to discuss ‘BlogTalk Leadership’. Moderated by Jehan Ara, President, P@SHA, the group of panelists included Adnan Malik, Producer of Coke Studios, Sana Saleem, Co-founder of Gawahi, Tariq Mustafa, Assistant Brand Manager â€" Urban Youth at Telenor Pakistan, and Imtiaz Noor Mohammad, a technology evangelist and CEO, Inspire-x. With the entire session live-streamed on Google Hangouts and tweeted with the tag #PBA#, Blogtalk Leadership discussed social media users’ statistics and their frame of activity. Tariq Mustafa quoted Telenor’s current campaign, Khamoshi Ka Boycott that stresses on bringing about change ‘for the masses, by the masses.’

Quite synonymous to the ideals of blogosphere, the campaign encourages youth to step up and speak out against the flaws of our society. One way to do so is to blog/microblog about it. At least one other person, who might be in a position to influence a correction, becomes aware of the injustice. After all, spreading awareness is the key message. As Tariq observes, Khamoshi Ka Boycott is meant to eliminate an instilled pessimism within the youth that looks towards emigration as a ray of hope every time the city shuts down on strike. Boycotting a thought bothering him, Jamal Ashiqain, a photo blogger, questioned how much blogging actually counts towards bringing about a massive change in the society, Serving it right, Sana Saleem countered the thought by noting that blogging talks about what conventional media does not, as the latter only serves the mandate of the politicians. When conveying a message in words becomes difficult, one can capture an unethical act in a picture and upload it. Blogging to bring a constructive change in the society can be as easy as that.  Involving the corporate community in the drive, Jehan Ara proposed that the social media agency should work towards generating ROI from the blogosphere as well.

A profit incentive makes the push towards bringing change only harder. However, a majority of bloggers present at the Unconference opined that it innovation in blogging still lacks luster. As copy-pasting is still the largest content source for bloggers, sustainable ROI to the local blogosphere isn’t justifiable.  It would be unfair to state that a profit-orientation cannot be introduced. Coke Studios that originated in Brazil and was later brought to Pakistan by Rohail Hyatt, its success, driven by original content and a viral promotion, should be emulated by all those belonging to the local blogosphere.

    Breakout Sessions  ..

As the BlogTalk came to a wrap, the Unconference proceeded into various distributed breakout sessions held simultaneously to replicate in real-life, a multi-channel communication platform.  One of these held focus on Public Policy and the New Media, in a discussion led by Hammad Siddiqui. Referencing his Entrepreneurship Career Management blog here, Hammad noted that his blog intends to highlight the lesser known faces so that the new media space at least isn’t perceived as a struggle junction by youngsters. Topics discussed at this panel discussion were linked-in with how public advocacy can be used to bring the desired change by engaging the blogosphere. In another follow-up session on Take Back the Tech (TBT), by Sana Saleem, representing TBT; a discussion revolved around using old media and new media spaces in collaboration to benefit the society at large. Where written content often fails the test of originality, visual content, for instance photoblogging, should be used towards healthy activism, Jamal observed. Yet tagging and water-marking should be done wisely to protect against a possible misuse or copyright infringement.

As deemed necessary, how to use wordpress and how to put together a blog, were also discussed. In a session on WordPress Basics, Majid Mirza, founder of goodnews.pk, emphasized that wordpress currently hosts 11 million blogs. Its biggest USP is that it is built on opensource and can be easily customized to the user’s preferences. Goodnews.pk has used wordpress as a platform to promote optimistic content which, in itself, is a rarity in Pakistan.  Due to this, goodnews.pk holds a monopoly in the region, considering the nature of content showcased. A separate  breakout session was dedicated to the craft of writing blogs led by Bushra Khalid with a hands-on round of activity.

Following these were sessions on CSR: Raising Community Awareness Programs also addressed by Majid Mirza, The Power of Storytelling for Causes: Defining a Relationship between Blogging and Journalism led by Talha Bin Hassam, and The Photo Blog: How to Correctly Capture the Right Moments by Jamal Ashiqain.

With the Breakout Sessions, Unconference in Karachi came to a close, having discussed the constituents of effective and intelligent blogocracy. Follow-up articles on the 2nd Annual Pakistan Blog Awards and the Unconference Sessions are also accessible on the website.  If you wish to register for the upcoming 2nd Annual Pakistan Blog Awards Unconferences in Islamabad or Lahore, please click here.

    Is Telenor Officially Supporting PTI?

    Is Telenor Officially Supporting PTI?

By Aamir Attaa · Tuesday, Dec 27, 2011 43 Comments

In countries like United States, businesses and generally corporate sector supporting political campaigns through donations is in practice for long. However, at times questions are raised when these corporations start influencing in policy making for the their respective sectors/domains.

To prevent this situation many countries have legislated terms for political financing to make sure that businesses are not benefited above the law and in any form in return of the funds they give to political parties.

In Pakistan, no such known phenomenon exists. Political parties can’t get direct, indirect, public or any other type of funds from businesses for their election campaigns. In fact Election Commission of Pakistan has this rule clearly mentioned on its website, it says:

Any contribution made, directly or indirectly, by any foreign government, multi-national or domestically incorporated public or private company, firm, trade or professional association shall be prohibited and the parties may accept contributions and donations only from individuals.

Recently, Telenor’s marketing campaigns seem aligned with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, through their Khamoshi ka Boycott, Rockstar song “Saada Haq Ithay Rakh” and other similar activates that somehow give the impression that company is quietly but officially supporting a certain political party, i.e. PTI.

For instance check this status update on Talkshawk’s Facebook Page:

talkshawk thumb Is Telenor Officially Supporting PTI?

It won’t be out of place to mention here that Shehzad Roy, Telenor’s brand ambassador was seen performing Djuice youth anthem (Kiya Darta Hay) at PTI’s Lahore Jalsa. Aamir Ibrahim, CMO at Telenor told me that company does not control anyone else’s political affiliations; he said that this company policy applies to employees, partners and brand ambassadors alike. But people are for sure linking Telenor with PTI through Shehzad Roy’s performance at PTI’s Jalsa.

Then hefty advertisement campaign (valuing millions of rupees) for promoting just a CRBT of “Rockstar” (Saada Haq, Ithay Rakh) adds more questions to Telenor’s policy of not maintaining any revolutionary thoughts.

This is not the first time we are pointing out Telenor’s political involvement, in fact, ApnaTime did a story six months back raising questions over it’s Khamoshi ka Boycott campaign.

I know all this is too vague, and one could give Telenor the benefit of the doubt that it is just promoting its products with a tagline which is somehow, maybe co-incidentally, aligned with PTI but let’s have a look at a tweet going out from Official Djuice Twitter account (which was later deleted by the company) that reveals the clear picture of Telenor’s intents:

PTI Jalsa thumb Is Telenor Officially Supporting PTI?

I leave this up to you to decide on the direction of Telenor’s marketing and digital campaigns.

You can also share your thoughts on whether corporate sector involvement in political campaigns is something that should happen or not and the way corporations can possibly influence political decisions based on such support.

We also need to see how political involvement can backfire on organization under the head of political victimizations, especially in countries like Pakistan.

Just to mention again business are prohibited to support political parties as per Pakistani laws, at least as of now.

The State Of The iPhone 4S Jailbreak And Unlock

About two months ago, we wrote a post on the status of the iPhone 4S jailbreak. Because of the recent updates on the whole matter, that post is now outdated. In this post, we’ll be talking about the state of the iPhone 4S jailbreak and software unlock.

    iPhone 4S (2)

For starters, our readers should know that, as of writing (December 18th), there is no tool available publicly for jailbreaking or unlocking your iPhone 4S.

The good news, however, is how there is a lot of work being done on both.

On October 28th, iPhone Dev-Team member and iPhone hacker MuscleNerd announced that he had successfully achieved iPhone 4S jailbreak after uploading two screenshots which verified his claim. There is, however, “LOTS of work left”  and there are “huge missing pieces” are preventing its public release.

    434803720

Then, just about a week ago, enthusiasts were given their first look at untethered jailbreak for iOS 5. This jailbreak comes from pod2g who is famous for discovering many exploits in iOS devices which lead to (un)tethered jailbreaks. The video he uploaded showed an iPod touch untethered-jailbroken on iOS 5.0. This iPod touch was restarted in the video and it successfully booted into jailbroken state (which is what separates a untethered jailbreak from a tethered one).

According to his latest blogpost and tweets, this untethered jailbreak has been tested and is code-complete for the iPod touch 3G, iPhone 4 (GSM), original iPad, iPhone 3GS on iOS 5.0.1. Devices left untested so far are the iPod touch 4G, Apple TV, iPad 2 and, of course, the iPhone 4S. Pod2G has stated that once the untethered jailbreak is ready for older devices, he will start working on making it work A5-based iOS devices like the iPad 2 and 4S.

He also recently tweeted that he has finally got his hands on iPhone 4S, and is working to see if he can jailbreak it with the exploit he found for iOS 5.

pod2g: Hi! I have a 4S in hand (thx). Will work hard on it this weekend.

Since his jailbreak is likely based on a software-based (userland or kernel) exploit, we have a feeling he just might be able to get it working.

So yes, a jailbreak for the iPhone 4S is in the making and it should be ready soon.

    Unlock-iPhone

As for the iPhone 4S unlock, that is being readied as well. MuscleNerd from iPhone Dev-Team tweeted a couple of weeks ago that a “very promising” unlock for iPhone 4S is in the works. He later dumped the baseband bootrom which means that the unlock is closer than ever to a public release.

This unlock will probably come after the jailbreak, though, since it probably be released in the form of an update to ultrasn0w which currently unlocks iPhone 4/3GS on older basebands.

If you wish to stay updated on the latest news from the iPhone 4S jailbreaking and unlocking scene, stay tuned to Redmond Pie!

    Gaming Trends in Pakistan

    (For PC World Pakistan)

There’s a gaming competition on in December at the Tribal Gaming Cafe in Karachi (near Avari Towers). The competition will start from Dec 24, 2011 and last into February, ending on February 6, 2011. So here’s the chance for you to spend every weekend at Tribal now. The competition will feature the Fifa’10 on PS3 and PC the first weekend. This will be followed by Need for Speed Most Wanted, Defence of the Ancients, Tekken 5, and Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare and end with Counter Strike 1.6 from February 4 to 6.

But why mention this here? Both locally and internationally, as one of the most popular of activities on any device, Gaming and related gaming news has just as much right of being talked about as any other development in the tech industry. As per the norm, come Christmas season and all industries across the world; come up with great deals for you to avail from. And naturally those absolutely fabulous deals include many in the gaming sector also.

The news is full of them… Remember Super Mario… that ‘30 odd years old Italian’ avatar with the moustache and re workday clothes? Well, with Nintendo 3DS, Mario Kart 7 headed the list of Nintendo games bought this Christmas season. Bravo Mario! Generation of us, have locally, as well as in the international gamers’ world, enjoyed Mario and his many adventures. And the editions only seem to be getting more fascinating.

Nintendo is not the only one to churn out new games or offer awesome deals in various games. Kinect and Xbox 360, Play Station… you name it, and they have all released games and seasonal discount offers on said games that will truly impress users. Either that or they have updated and released newer, faster and easier to play with, versions of their devices and updated games to play on those.

And then we also have the whole arena of online games. Popular war craft games such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, Elder Scrolls vs. Skyrim and Battlefield 3 are just a few of the many games that have been making it to the top of most popular games’ lists this season. Role-play games are just one genre of games though. You still have online casino games or the Zynga category sort which a number of players love and continue to play with enthusiasm.

So like it or lump it, at the international level, games are definitely one of the best things to happen to most of us and a large percentage of our time is spent online playing various online games. But while this is the sort of response that you get at the international level, what is the sort of scenario existing at the local level in Pakistan? Does the Pakistani community have gamers? Are they really serious gamers? What sort of games appeal to them? These questions and more come to mind as soon as you think of the local gamer industry.

At the local level, we do have a lot of gamers and a very active and thriving local gaming community, as is proved by the fact that we do have a lot of gaming zones such as Tribal in Karachi and Rawalpindi (near Cineplex Cinemas, Jinnah Park), and even the numerous, smaller gaming cafes that you may find in any neighborhood across Pakistan. The competition details stated above also indicates the level of interest the local population has in gaming.

Then again, a number of gaming consoles have also been launched here and these include the Dell Intel Alienware laptops, the Nintendo 3DS and Play Stations’ numerous editions. The more serious of gamers regularly visit these gaming zones, or they own their own dedicated gaming laptops. Either ways, we have a very devoted and blooming gaming audience available locally.

However, really getting down to the grass root level, most people in Pakistan love games. However, there is also the drawback that with finances being as low as they are at present for most Pakistanis, people prefer to play games on their own PCs rather than get a gaming console solely for the purpose of playing games.

To this effect, one gamer, Adeel Hashmi stated that, he does not even usually get the new editions of games, but rather prefers playing the old versions. When asked why he does so, he told us that “Those who can afford it switch to newer versions of their favorite games. Because the updated versions require high end PCs or expensive equipment installed before they can run properly. So the ‘normal’ people amongst us stick to the old versions until we can afford the new ones!” To back this up, another gamer, Sheikh Owais, informed us that he is, “a huge fan of King of Fighters, but the 98 version is the only one that I really seem to like, so I love playing every chance that I get!”

Besides that, while online gaming does enjoy a certain level of popularity in Pakistan (think Zynga and Facebook here!), it does not still have the sort of popularity that this particular area of gaming enjoys the world over. Zynga and Facebook in face, have to a very large extent helped to popularize the idea of online gaming in the country. Before that while you could on some websites, play with other gamers online, the idea never really gained mass appeal.

So what else are we left with? Gaming zones. And those small-scale gaming zones that you may find everywhere across the city are the ones that are most popular. Most people there come from the middle and lower strata of the local community and are there solely to share the mutual love and enjoyment of games with other like-minded gamers. Others, more especially female gamers, in the local community are largely cut off from the local gaming sector for the simple reason that the gender discrimination prevalent in our society does not allow the concept of ‘female-gamers’ to sit very well with us, and because most gaming haunts are thought to be unsuitable places for girls to frequent. Hence interested girls stay at home and, if they really are into gaming, go either for PC or online games.

The culture is slowly changing however. With Smartphones and tablets invading the local market, and with the number of applications, both free and paid available on them, more and more people are looking to play games. Eventually, we’ll probably breed a generation of gamers in the country. Meantime, wouldn’t the local gaming industry like to step up and try and develop (and sell) games for the local Pakistani gamer society? Isn’t it high time they become more active? Meantime, who’s going to Tribal???

    Facebook Allegedly Sells Users’ Info

    Facebook Allegedly Sells Users’ Info

    By KayCee · Tuesday, Nov 29, 2011 0 Comments

facebook1 thumb Facebook Allegedly Sells Users InfoFacebook, is yet again, alleged for selling users’ information to third parties, particularly with the advertisers, said a report published by The Daily Telegraph.

Newspaper further says that Facebook, a social networking website, may face a crackdown by  European Commission that is planning to stop the way the website "eavesdrops" on its users to gather information about their political opinions, sexuality, religious beliefs â€" and even their whereabouts.

Report says that move by European Commission comes after paper’s investigation that highlights the extent to which Facebook can help companies to focus adverts according to the profiles of users.

Report claims that Facebook uses a sophisticated software to gather information about its users private information in addition to their activities on the website, to make it available to advertisers.

Everything people share with their friends on Facebook is being tracked by the firm, retained, and can be used for commercial purposes.

It can even harvest information by performing keyword searches on behalf of advertisers. In this way, it can find out, for instance, details about people’s political beliefs or their sexual preferences.

Facebook stores messages and "chats" sent via the site and keeps them on its database even after they are deleted by those involved in the private online conversations.

Following consistent reports and major privacy concerns, EU can issue a directive for Facebook in January which will ban such advertising practices unless users specifically allow it, the newspaper said.

    Facebook has denied the allegations.

Nokia Lumia 800 Batman: Dark Knight Rises Limited Edition Smartphone Unveiled [VIDEO]

Nokia plans on creating a limited number of handsets inspired by the newer Batman franchise. The Lumia 800 will feature a laser-etched Batman logo on the back of the device.

    nokia_lumia_800_dark_knight_rises_1-580x435

Inspired by the movie Dark Knight Rises, due out in theaters next year, the phone is basically a normal black variant of the Lumia 800. Peculiarly, a Batman logo is found on the bottom of the device. You’ll most likely hide it when holding it in your hand. The logo being black doesn’t help either, resting on a black phone and all.

This isn’t the first time Nokia pushes out limited edition phones inspired by the movies. The Nokia 8110 was used in the original Matrix movie. The phone was modified with a spring-loaded slider that became so popular and sought after that the company introduced the mechanism in their next model, the 7110.

Batman Dark Knight Rises is the third series and a sequel to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Creating a phone inspired by the movie is not a bad move. Fans lined up for the previous movie bringing box office sales topping 1 billion.

Aside from huge success in the box office, Batman has gained popularity in game consoles as well. Batman: Arkham City, the sequel to Batman: Arkham Asylum, received mostly positive reviews powered by huge sales. Batman: Arkham City Lockdown is also available for iOS.

    nokia_lumia_800_dark_knight_rises_2-580x322

The photos come from a tweet by Nokia blogger @jonchoo, but now he’s given us something even better: the video of an actual unboxing of the device. As he opens the limited edition Batman package, number 27 out of 40 apparently, he showcases the phone’s etched batman emblem. Aside from subtle differences, everything else seems to be the same, including the inner packaging.

Earlier we reported how Nokia plans to use Windows on their future current lineup. They predicted that the current youth market are bored with Apple and Android products and are striving try to find something new. The company would then come in with a better “out of the box” experience.

Don’t start heading off to pre-order one just yet. Nokia only plans on producing 40 of the batman phones. That may change in the future.

A step ahead: Ufone restores Facebook and Twitter apps for BlackBerry

Ufone has restored the Facebook and Twitter apps for its Blackberry customers. The access to social networking websites was blocked last year in May. PTA was directed, by the Lahore High Court, to block these websites across Pakistan, on allegations of containing blasphemous content. The move was triggered after a contest invited users to draw caricatures of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The users could access the apps and they were able to use Facebook and Twitter via the BlackBerry browser. Recently, the services have been restored but a content filtering solution has also been installed, restricting access to specific Facebook pages banned by the local authorities. It is hoped that such a move will restore the confidence of users after facing a complete blackout of services for nearly a week
